Rep. Giffords serves Thanksgiving to troops
Source: CBS

(CBS/AP) TUCSON, Ariz. - U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords helped serve a Thanksgiving meal to service members and retirees at a military base
in her hometown of Tucson, Ariz.

Giffords arrived in the dining hall at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base at midday Thursday wearing a ball cap and an apron with her nickname
of "Gabby" sewn on the front. She was accompanied by her retired astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, who also donned an apron.

Giffords used only her left hand as she served, a sign that physical damage remains from the injuries she suffered when she was shot in January.

Kelly supported her from her left side as she worked the turkey station on the serving line. He served ham.

... I get a piece of dirt in my eye.

I am the guy in this picture ... and we dudes have to keep up our image.

Gabby could have stayed home and done nothing and nobody would have said a word but instead she went out
to make people happy. Pure class.

7. I can't believe it has been less than a year
Edited on Thu Nov-24-11 04:37 PM by DFW
This was Gabby and Mark with Jane Condon, a comedienne who is a friend of ours, as we celebrated
the New Year on Jan. 1: http://www.renaissanceweekend.org/site/aboutus/gallery.htm

Exactly one week later she was shot. I heard about it as I got off a plane in DFW airport.
At first the report said she had died, That was quickly amended to say she was in a coma
and not expected to live as anything more than a vegetable. So much for those predictions.
You have to know Gabby Giffords to realize the incredible depth of her spirit and will.

Not 10 months ago, Obama was proudly announcing that she had opened her eyes. Now she is
serving Thanksgiving dinner to people some of whom are less handicapped than she is. Not
10 months ago, I wondered if I would ever see her again. Now I have every hope to see her
again at New Year's. I guess it used to be some kind of secret that Gabby Giffords was special.
It looks like the secret is out.

13. Hi Shireen
Thanksgiving is not a holiday here, so I had to work like every other day. Tomorrow night, we
are having one daughter, about 14 Germans and an Austrian over for a big late Thanksgiving
dinner. As it is a normal workweek here, we do it on Friday, so our friends can make it.

I tried to call Helen in Washington, but only got her answering machine, so she's with family
and/or friends--and that's as it should be.

Thanks for the "holiday" wishes all the same! There is no rest for the weary. I was in Sprout City
this afternoon, have to be in central Germany over the weekend and have to run down to Spain on Monday.
Even so, if it kills me tomorrow, it was still better than a desk job!

Happy Thanksgiving back at ya! And I give Gabby 50/50 for showing up in December! She's currently at
a facility in North Carolina, and we'll be celebrating New Year's as usual in South Carolina--not too
far away. Things may get interesting before that anyway. I'll PM you.

It's been a rough year for you, too, if I remember correctly.

There's a lot to be thankful for, today and every day.

18. Your memory is quite intact
Yes, I had a rather hairy time of it in the late summer. It's kind that you noticed and remembered!
But I seem to have bounced back and have resumed the crazy hectic lifestyle that probably led to my
near-miss in the first place. I'm trying to slow down. No luck so far, but I have good intentions!

I also hope 2012 is the best yet for you and your family. ;-)

Here's to Gabby getting another dance with her husband, too.

25. I'm hoping to be able to report that, too
It's going to be kind of strange, seeing her completely transformed from the woman I have known.
We were supposed to have dinner together in Washington on Jan. 14th. You can imagine the state
I was in when I found out what happened to her. Her staff in her DC office is really great, and
has been extremely supportive.

IF she decides she's not ready to resume her duties in Congress yet, come election time, I HOPE
her husband runs in her place., Mark is quite the opposite of Gabby, who is as outgoing as can
be (she was, anyway). He is the strong silent type, and was always content to let her be the
star when the two were together. Now I see he is more comfortable speaking out on his own in
public, and if he runs in her stead for her seat in Congress, I am fully confident that he can
do the job and do her proud until she is ready to resume the seat herself.

19. Gabby loves music
About three years ago at New Year's, after most of the gang had gone to bed, there were maybe 15 of us left in the
hotel ballroom, and I got my 12 string back out, and we sang some oldies, mostly Byrds and songs by Paul Simon. Gabby
asked for her favorite, which is "Bye Bye Miss American Pie." I could figure out the chords, but didn't know the words.
Sure enough, some guy gets out an iPhone, looks up the lyrics on the internet, and he, with Gabby looking over his
shoulder, sang a duet with her while I faked the music on guitar. It seemed so natural at the time...NOW one wishes
someone had been there with a video camera.

21. That sentiment is appreciated
Gabby has been severely denounced on DU before for being a Blue Dog. She ALWAYS cared about people
and THE people. When she met people in a relaxed situation, her line was "I do hugs, not handshakes."
