Pakistani Suspected Of Boiling Husband’s Flesh
Source: Salon.com

Friday, Nov 25, 2011 4:24 AM Eastern Standard Time

By Ashraf Khan, Associated Press

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Police say they have arrested a woman in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi suspected of murdering her husband, then chopping his body into pieces and boiling them to try to get rid of the evidence.

Police officer Khalid Nadeem Baig said Friday that 42-year-old Zainab Bibi told authorities she killed her husband because he tried to sexually assault her 17-year-old daughter from another marriage.

Baig said Bibi sedated her husband by mixing sleeping pills in his tea and strangled him with rope. She and her nephew allegedly cut up her husband and boiled the flesh.

Police say they discovered her plot after neighbors complained about a bad smell coming from her home. They also arrested the nephew.

18. Well, there you go.
As per usual on DU, allegation = fact. I'm sure you'd agree that in the US, the suggestion of a sexual advance is worthy of the death penalty. I imagine that we should just kill most people in US prisons, right? Killing people is great, right? Why not bring back stoning? The fucking bastards deserve it, don't they? After the stoning, I think we should also desecrate the bodies. Don't you agree?

I only suggest this, because I'm sure you'd feel the same way about a story concerning the police in the US arresting a man for killing and boiling his wife (stupid police, the bitch obviously deserved it, or it wouldn't have happened - obviously). It's just awesome!! Fuck the law. Fuck decency. Give us entertainment.

22. Xenophobia is not becoming.
Do you understand that Pakistan isn't some frightening "evil empire"? I get it that Bush sold you and most Americans on the fact that every country with a Muslim majority was some sort of wicked place, just as Reagan did about communism two decades earlier, but it's not true. Do you get that Pakistan is in fact a place full of educated and cultured men and women? That it has universities where women are educated to be doctors, lawyers, etc.? Hmm... which country had a woman president first? Was it the US before Pakistan? I guess she was just there at the behest of her husband.

23. On the whole, no it's not a "frightening evil empire."
And it's not Islam that is the problem. It's the acceptance by some of the crimes against women that is the problem. Acceptance by average people like you, and by those in power the world over. If it were white men being tortured and subjugated, you bet your ass we'd be on it in a flash.

I don't really find it 'awesome' that she was driven to murder, I'm not a monster. But the lack of any kind of REAL help for women the world over is disgusting, and I'm fucking tired of it.

25. Murder is obviously the solution then.
So many abused women have obviously been doing it wrong. They should have just murdered the men abusing them and then tried to cover up the act. Is that reasonable? There's a very simple thing that was drilled into my head from an early age: two wrongs ≠ one right.

26. It was her solution.
Again, I don't condone murder. But if she had to choose between committing murder, and her daughter being sexually assaulted, then I'm not going to judge her for the choice she made.

Of course, she could have just gone to the police and reported him. I'm sure they would have believed her and rushed to her aid, and her daughter would not be persecuted for being a rape victim. Um, yea, that's the ticket...

Your morals just don't fit in some situations, lofty as they may be.

28. Nice false dichotomy.
Again you come out with some xenophobic rationalization for murder. The world is a complicated place, and it's full of lots of really fucked up people. I think a murderer who boils the dismembered corpse of their victim is more fucked up than a hypothetical, evil, brown policeman. Can you understand that in a conflict, one party isn't necessarily in the right? There is no need to defend a murderer just because their victim may have been a criminal as well.

She was trying to get rid of the corpse. If I had been in her shoes I probably would have poisoned him instead. It would certainly have been a lot less messy, and a lot easier to get away with.

Murder is murder, but there are degrees to everything. She was saving her child.

60. As I said, xenophobia is not becoming.
Karachi is a massive cosmopolitan city. It is full of people of different languages, ethnicities, religions, etc. Somehow, most of them don't use murder as a solution to their problems. Particularly, not a grizzly premeditated murder. The dead man... ? Well, we don't know his side of the story, because he was drugged, strangled, and once dead, chopped up into pieces. I want you to imagine someone doing that. Really. Take a minute to think about that. That's some fucked up serial killer shit. If that happened in the US, you would not think it was ok. Motivation? Who fucking cares? You think murder is ok because the culture is different? Fuck... it's a different culture - maybe rape is ok there too, huh? No. Some shit is just wrong.

72. I think it proves a lot.
It proves, for instance, that a majority of the people are happy to elect a woman to lead them. I don't think that's a sign of a culture that has zero respect for women. Are things as good for women in Pakistan, on average, as they are in many western countries? I doubt it. I do, however, know for an absolute fact, that a woman viciously murdering someone and disposing of the body is not ok under any circumstances.

68. that is neither here nor there on the issue
From State Dept. Human Rights Report:

http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/hrrpt/2010/sca/154485.htm

Women

Rape, other than by one's spouse, is a criminal offense, with punishment that ranges from a minimum of 10 to 25 years in prison and a fine to the death penalty. The penalty for gang rape is either death or life imprisonment, but sentences were often less severe. Although rape was frequent, prosecutions were rare.

According to a 2008 HRCP report, 80 percent of wives in rural Punjab feared violence from their husbands, and nearly 50 percent of wives in developed urban areas admitted that their husbands beat them.

Women who tried to report abuse faced serious challenges. Police and judges were sometimes reluctant to take action in domestic violence cases, viewing them as family problems. Instead of filing charges, police typically responded by encouraging the parties to reconcile. Abused women usually were returned to their abusive family members. Women were reluctant to pursue charges because of the stigma attached to divorce and their economic and psychological dependence on relatives. Relatives were hesitant to report abuse due to fear of dishonoring the family.

Slightly more than 50 percent of the population over the age of 10 is literate. More than 40 percent of girls never enroll in school.

And a lot more at that link.

Of course it doesn't justify murdering him.

Pakistan does have a functioning criminal justice system. That is the only proper venue for determining if he actually did what he was accused of, and if so what punishment is called for under the law.

In my original response to your post, I drew your attention to what what was *done* to Socrates, not to any of the ideas from the thinking of Socrates, himself. Had you known what was done to him, or at least had the inclination to look it up, you would have completely understood what I was saying to you from the onset. Your inability to discern that, as well as your immature inclination to bicker with me has now disqualified you from our having any further dialog.

It's not some sort of lawless backwater. It's a modern country with modern, cultured, educated people. The fact that I have to keep pointing this out blows my mind.

Alot of you do not understand that women in these places have no rights. They are treated as less valuable then animals. There is no "fleeing" because the authorities would bring them both right back to him.

Life for women in that part of the world is NOT in any manner of thinking comparable to life for women here.

On edit. Come to think of it, even if she acted in self defense then cutting up her husband and boiling the flesh is probably nevertheless a crime and she should face justice for that. Of course that would be a less serious crime than murder and her punishment should be much less severe.

58. You can compare there to here though
What if there is no justice for women there. What if there is no way to find safety through the courts or the police? What if beating, raping and killing of women is looked upon as not that big a deal?
