Don't miss Countdown re-run tonight at Midnight Eastern
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 09:32 PM by scmirage
Keith Olbermann did a story about how the Marines orchestrated the fall of that Saddam statue in Baghdad last April. He was interviewing some "cy-ops" expert who said that it was a "brilliant" move and that there was nothing wrong in inciting these folks to topple the statue. Keith mentioned the documentary (can't remember the name at the moment)--the one about the Arab language network and how they said the folks doing the toppling weren't even Iraqi--that any Mid-Easterner would have known that by their accents. Then Keith went on to say how when he suggested that the crowd had been more than a little encouraged to topple this statue by the Marines that he'd been attacked, and his patriotism questioned and then he went on and did a brilliant mini-rant about the danger in a Free Press not being able to ask questions--and how the war had been wrapped up in the flag and to question anything about it was to label yourself un-American in certain factions. Then he mentioned that he'd been correct all along as the Marines had finally admitted this week that they had indeed orchestrated the whole thing. It was a very compelling moment.

3. The documentary was "The Control Room" and he was a
psychological operations expert.

Yep, the whole thing was orchestrated. Remember the coverage in the U.S. It was everywhere and over and over again.

Who were the psy-ops supposed to be for - the Iraqis or the Americans? Both, I guess. It sure worked in the U.S.

4. That was what Olbermann
did his little mini-rant about--how he'd questioned it at the time because it was so obvious but got attached from every direction for being un-American for even suggesting such a thing. It was another one of those manufactured "photo ops" that BushCo are so famous for.

7. I lover Olbermann, He is insightful and hilarious. Most shows can't even
do one of those things. The Daily Show and Countdown are both great.

14. It was a powerful piece if viewers took in the real facts.....
Point is that a cameraman didn't just happen to be wandering by seeing a crowd. That statue was hand picked by the US propaganda minister and it just HAD to come down.

Truth is a marine hooked up the cables to it,they had to get a big group around the statue(many were not even Iraqi)and yank it down. All in the guise that Iraqi's love the US for invading.

BULLSHIT....

11. Remember that photo..
of Chalabu's guys arriving in Iraq. They didn't even bother to change clothes between the time they got off the plane and the time they were in the square toppling the statue.

16. Remember that access to the monument was blocked by US soldiers.
The only people there were there because we let them be there.

10. It brought a smile..
to hear him so aggressively question the military's tactics.

Of course, the psy-ops expert replied with some nonsense that soldiers lives would have been in real danger if the army hadn't kept the media from reporting the truth. It was clear even then that Iraqis never fell for that bit of propoganda, so to use the excuse that the truth posed some threat is a lame way of covering for the reality that the administration was really only interested in events that could sway American opinion. If they cared what Iraqis thought, they would have protected the museums and made a better effort to avoid civilian casualties.
