32. well
You hate them as evidenced by your posts here and you seem to be encouraging them with the "fuck you" pictures adorning the window.

Look I’m not trying to piss in your corn flakes I've just seen this shit first hand. Being politically aware at a young age is fantastic. But, if there isn't the nuance behind the ideas they are just following what they are being told. It's not enough that a child think someone is an asshole because they are told s/he is, children need to understand why. Hearing both sides of an issue from the horse’s mouth, understanding the issues involved and then making a reasoned decision is the ONLY healthy way to from an opinion. Until children are old enough to do this I don't think there are any merits in pushing activism.

that they are being taught to "hate" anyone. They are holding a sign that reads, "stop the war assholes." Asshole is just a word, I don't care if kids use it or know it, on either side of any debate.

As for the 'stop the war,' part...I see absolutely NOTHING wrong in teaching kids to abhor war and to embrace peace....

We see nothing wrong in teaching them not to hit their classmates, to solve their disputes with something *other* than violence, but it's suddenly a problem when we broaden that to a worldview? Then it's forcing politics on them?? I don't get that...sorry.

and then we'll talk. Maybe there are a few, but I'd say they are few and far between.

We're not talking religion or ethnicity here either. We're talking core values/ethics. Right and wrong. Teach a child right and wrong, ethics, values, morals, and yes "The Golden Rule" and they will clearly see that this isn't a case of hating a person but rather hating that persons warped, twisted and sick values/ethics.

These kids are doing just fine, they live with people who care about their country, and, when there is a universal awareness that George Bush was the monster who did all the damage to the world that will have minifested by the time they're grown up, they will look upon their parents as heros.

the opposition were rational, reasonable people. But they demonstrate on a DAILY basis that they are not that at all. I get where you're coming from, but if John McCain were president, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Let's just take one issue as an example - BushCo says intelligent design should be taught in science class, while the overwhelming majority of the world and virtually all scientists have to hold back the laughter. Or one of your most vocal and well-healed supporters calls for the assassination of a democratically-elected head of state. Or a senator on your side diagnoses a brain-dead woman via videotape. Or another senator on your side blames the crimes of Catholic priests on the "liberalism" of Boston. These aren't even considered issues in the rest of the civilized world.

I'm absolutely certain these kids can understand what's at sake. I was born in 1968, and I remember Vietnam and Watergate. It didn't take too much in the way of brainpower to figure out that Nixon was an asshole, even at that young age.

I believe the children are the future--teach them well and let them lead the way.

117. Don't assume that you know how these children acquired their activism
Many kids do ask the questions and can understand the reasoning, current events and history to formulate their own opinions on the issues. I know mine do and they're both under thirteen years of age. And hating Bush for what he stands for, if they indeed do,is natural and easy--he is done not one redeemable thing for this country since he's been in office. Nor does snarking at Bush assume one hates whole groups of Republicans.

and I've had to answer questions from them about how many kids are getting killed in the 'asshole's' war. No one is teaching them hate; they already know that war is not right. Those kids are plenty old enough to know that assholes start wars. And if W didn't want to be seen in that kind of light, he shouldn't have had his picture taken numerous times flipping people off. What the hell kind of example is that?!

72. Gee - you would think you would be more appalled that the
guy behind them was captured flipping folks off! That is his action, it is not a photo shopped image. Teaching children that leaders of the world that flip people off and start wars are assholes is not wrong. It is true - it is much more factual than the freepers teaching their children to follow blindly just because he abuses the title of "president".

Teaching children to recognize evil and lies is not racism, I don't see where racism comes into play in any of this. The kids are white, the prezidip is white, where is the race issue?

Classism is the prezidip's issue, not ours. He sees his "haves" and dismisses the remainder of us as the "have nots" and laughs about it.

You don't discuss any issues in threads that I have seen you post in, you just judge and ridicule.

War. I knew it was evil and wrong, I knew Nixon was an asshole for keeping us there.

Where the hell do you see neo-con or paleo-con in that image in the OP? And hating war has nothing to do with "resource" wars or "neo-liberalism". Calling for the end of the war should not be considered a race issue or a social issue as described in your posts. It should be seen as a matter of common sense and a truly patriotic call. What America has become in the hands of the man that is flipping us off in that photo is not the America I love and it is not anything to be proud of.

You see children with a sign that says "stop the war assholes" and you see them standing in front of the weed-n-chief flipping the bird. Hell, Nixon didn't flip the nation off and I knew he was an asshole.

I've been avoiding your posts because I recognize someone with an agenda. Your temperment is not "let's discuss the issues". It is "let me judge the posts and see what I can stir up", imho. I have never bullied you, unless of course you consider my ability to call bullshit to your warped logic bullying.

I also don't get involved in communism threads because they are non-issues. Most of the time they are begun by disruptors that confuse liberalism and communism.

During the cold war the powers that be threatened us with the nasty "communists". We were taught to hide under our desks or in the halls of our schools with our heads between our legs. That fear lingers in the hearts of many and to me it is a needless fear.

Today, the powers that be use the thread of terrorists. Whatever it takes to declare a war and to control the masses. Whatever it takes to line their pockets and feed the war machine.

124. Afganistan is wrong too!
Please explain to me what you mean by "what about Bosnia". Please put that in context for me.

I am not bullying you - I am putting your twisted posts into proper perspective.

You acted offended that these children stood in front of an image of the weed and asked "Do they know why the guy behind them is an asshole?" I simply pointed out to you that he was flipping folks off and that he was behaving as an asshole, so it was a given that the children recognized his faults and can see him for what he is -- an asshole. And he is an asshole not just because he was arrogant enough to be caught on camera flipping off the public, but because he started an illegal and immoral war based on lies.

Now this little pout of yours is rather enlightening:
"Get off your high horse. I discuss but people like you have a problem with it and think you have everyone sussed out. Well darling you don't and instead of posting where I like to judge people you instead like to insult and try to intimidate. I've been reading this site for a long time and you stand out, and not because of the quality of the discussion you offer.'

Gee, how nice of you to admit your preconceived notions and your possible agenda. I also have no idea what "you have everyone sussed out" means, but I do get a general idea what you are trying to convey in that rant.

If my logic and ability to see you for what you are and to call you on your distorted logic is bullying you, then you sure have poor debating skills and your posts are lacking in both facts and substance.

There is no racism or hate depicted in those images. There is contempt for an idiot that has sent thousands to die based on lies and distortions. The racism is his agenda, he promotes hating anyone with dark skin that practices a religion different than the religion of the right. I cannot even say his religion because I believe his religious posturing is just that posturing. He has no faith or belief, he puts on a show and the xitians buy the tickets and give standing ovations.

War is wrong - illegal and immoral wars started and perpetuated because of greed is not only wrong, it is evil, pure and simple.

:hi:

176. You keep bringing up the issues of neo-liberalism and resource
wars and racism in this debate. Those issues have NOTHING to do with the image of children holding up a sign that reads "Assholes stop the war". Yet, you use them to justify your rants and your misconceived notions that the mothers of these children are teaching their children to hate and are allowing them to become racists.

Again, where does racism come into play? Where is racism and hate even depicted in the images?

The children have been taught that hate is wrong and that this war is wrong. They know that the man responsible for the war is the man in that image flipping off the public. They know, though they are young, that his behavior is that of an asshole.

You began your judgmental rants by stating this "well You hate them as evidenced by your posts here and you seem to be encouraging them with the "fuck you" pictures adorning the window." This early post of yours blames the mothers for the image of the prezidip. It was not until it was pointed out to you that the "fuck you" image was not created or photo shopped but actually depicted the "weed-that-would-be-king" in his true, brazen assholeness that you dropped that attack.

You seem to change your colors as the leaves you find yourself sitting on change in color.

"You said that I was off base with wanting children to understand the complexity of the argument and said things like neo-liberalism and resource wars were not relevant, but then you proceed to justify your position with the following."

As you point out, but as you obviously fail to understand, my discussion of the "war on terra" and the illegal and immoral war are my perceptions. They have nothing to do with the mothers of the children found in the photos in this thread and/or what the mother's have explained to their children. Thus, the neo-liberalism and resource wars are not relevant to the discussion until you brought them into the discussion. I point out here that neo-liberalism is not a term that is frequently used on this board. Most of us that post here consider ourselves progressives and liberals. We don't accept the term neo-liberals because we see it as an attempt by the neo-cons to try to paint us with their nasty brushes.

Additionally, I never said anything about a "pick on merh" agenda. You have been the one whining that you are being bullied. Do you frequent other boards and come here for sport? I am unaccustomed to posters admitting that my posts have left an impression on them the way you claim mine have left an impression on you. Am I a legend in your mind? I know that I am not in mine. I just find it very odd that you continue to point out how my posts have branded you so.

I have not yet vilified you. I have asked you legitimate questions and have pointed out the failings in your rather pathetic attempts to justify your attacks on the mothers of the children depicted in the images.

190. Go back and check the posts in this thread and see who has
attacked and who has pointed out factual failings.

I would never assume to be on the same level of The Magistrate or H2O. I don't follow the posts of Minstreal Boy to judge his reasoning. Oddly enough, if you question H2O about me, you might find that he does not share your opinion. Go ahead and pmail him and ask.

I have never done as you have alleged and I will alert on your post as it is a personal attack on me. That may result in this post being deleted as well, but so be it. I do not make up things about people and misrepresent the argument, if you had proof of the allegation you would have provided proof. It appears that it is you that makes shit up.

Funny, when you have been proven wrong, when your mischaracterizations of others has been pointed out to you, you chose to attack me personally. That is a sign that you know you were wrong and now chose to alter the discussions by trying to make me defend myself. You can't defend your stance so you go after me. How pathetic is that?

You were wrong when you attacked the mothers of the children pictured in the photos and you have changed your reasoning as this thread has progressed. You cannot admit your failings so you stoop to calling me a bully and attacking me.

I stand by my comments about most posters here. We consider ourselves progressives and liberals. We don't need the extra labels attached such as neo-liberals, we aren't ashamed to be liberals.

193. You don't know me at all -
Go back and READ your posts. You alleged that the mothers were responsible for the bird flipping images and then when it was pointed out to you that it was the prez that actually was the bird flipper, you changed your tune. It was not until you were proven wrong and until the mother confronted you directly that you altered your stance. Called on the issues, you flip flopped. I am not alone in questioning your posts or the purpose of your posts.

Odd, you speak so highly of H2O and it was in the Plame threads that he and I became friends. You cannot even find justification for what your allege to be my negative attributes.

In the wrinkle threads there was a community that shared research and discussed possibilities. At no time did I twist and lie as you allege, those threads were sharing threads. I did defend the purpose of the threads and posters that were attacked by others that ridiculed the threads.

You have yet to explain how racism or the neo-con/neo-liberal issues are even involved in the simple posting of an image. Yet, you use those issues to support your attacks and warnings, your judgments and your reprimands.

And guess what, I have republican friends too! My, what a small world. Your judgments of me and your attacks on me came when I had the nerve to ask you to explain your attacks on the mothers.

I repeat, you don't know me at all. I consider myself very blessed.

196. Let's try this again.
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 04:33 AM by merh
1. You were called on the bird image, alleging that the mothers were responsible for it and then when it was pointed out to you that you should be upset that the weed is the one that flipped off the world, you backed off of your stance. Additionally, many posters pointed out to you that any leader that publically flips off folks is an asshole, thus the poster the children held up in the image was correct.

2. H2O and I became friends because of our ability to disagree and still respect the other's opinions. There is a history in those threads that you are not aware of and it consists of posters that tried to distort my views to him and vice-a-versa. He knows my heart and he knows my ethics, he would vehemently disagree with you and if he had seen your posts, he would set you straight. He also would have posted challenges to your early posts in this thread and would have questioned you on them just as I did. I am honored that H2O is my friend.

3. I repost your words so that you can see that you have accused me of lying "Tomorrow you will go after someone else you deem unworthy and you will make shit up about them while misrepresenting their arguments as well." Now who is lying?

4. You challenge me to look up a definition, I challenge you to look up the term racism. Racism is by definition related to RACE - not to the political party that one person adheres to or worships. Take your own advice and do some research - not all prejudice is racism.

5. I don't give a rats ass about your neo-liberalism or neo-con shit. You continue to bring up the issues and I don't care about them. You tried to involve the issue in the thread and the issue has no place in the thread.

6. You did attack the mothers, they felt it, one even commented on your attacks (see post 99) and the other tried to explain her stance. It was not until she explained her stance and others started defending her that you backed off.

7. Hint - comprehension is a wonder tool.

:hi:

198. I have not made up any shit about you.
Go back and review your posts and you will see that you began the attack by alleging that the mothers were teaching their children to hate - equating the hate to the hate of the Palenstines and the Jews, the Irish Catholics and the Protestants. Pure bullshit, but that was your reasoning. Do you want the numbers to your posts where you accused the mothers to promoting hate?

The hate is for the war - the mothers and their children hate the war and want peace and the are not terribly fond of the asshole that has caused this war.

And your denial of the use of the term is just silly, given you could have reviewed your posts before responding (as I had suggested several times.)

Your words "Activism is essential but children are to easily convinced hate is ok. How do you think racism continues generation after generation?" (No need to bow - I don't ask for your respect, I ask that you try to respect others here. I could care less what you think of me. I do care about the people on this board and I resent your efforts to make light of their efforts and/or your attempts to shame them for their efforts.)

Again, you need to go do some research of your own and try to comprehend that racism is not the same as prejudice. Racism and your other twisted reasonings equating the hate for the war as hate for fundies or repukes have no place in this thread. It was you that tried to distort the issues and when asked about it, you began attacks on me. Go back and actually read your posts and my original post to you. I made a legitimate observation and you began your attacks.

I am not the extremist and I will not apologize for opposing this war and/or fake attempts by folks that purport to wanting to temper the discourse with bull shit stances while attacking members of this community. You call others on their hate, yet your judgmental posts telling us how to react and what to think reflect the hate you have.

I don't want an armed revolution and have never promoted the notion. On the contrary, I have promoted peaceful resolution and legal resolution of the issues that face us. You are the one that promotes hate. Our way is working, that is why this board is subject to all sorts of attacks and why the likes of Cindy Sheehand scares the hell out of the other side.

BTW - I don't play the game where I go running for my friends to come bail me out. I would never go hunt down H2O to come set you straight. That is just childish, but from your posts, I see that is expected from you. If you want to know what H2O thinks of me, go ask him.

Merh is my sister.

Second point: I share concerns with the teaching children to hate. It is a topic worthy of discussion, although it seems that many people are not able to do so at this time. It's strange to me that we look at Iraq and discuss if "they" are "ready for democracy." We talk about the risks of their society degenerating into a civil war. I don't think we need look farther than the closest mirror.

213. BS! It's our DUTY as parents to teach our children that war is WRONG
My 11 and 14 year olds are well aware of the evils of racism, war, greedy Republican policies as well as many other politically related issues. Of course, they don't fully understand all of the implications, nor do most adults.

Neglecting to teach your child, thus allowing them to be indoctrinated into a culture of hate, is irresponsible. It's up to us to teach our children to understand the world and develop values.

We are not teaching our children to "hate." We are teaching our children right from wrong.

My boys KNOW that killing animals for no reason is wrong.......killing an animal because it pissed you off is wrong, they KNOW that 2+2 =4 they KNOW that quite possibly......killing people for NO reason, or killing people because they pissed you off is WRONG! We are an anti-war family!!!!! And proud! As for the picture in the background.........I TEACH my kids that flipping people off is not a nice thing to do.......I give PEACE signs to people who flip me off because I have "CINDY SHEEHAN TRUE PATRIOT" written on car window. They see that the President....IS DOING A NOT SO NICE THING.......again....they know 2+2 does not equal "War is Peace"

Do they hate? I don't think they do....do they have a strong dislike for a guy......he's no HERO! a guy who parades the idea of war and killing like it's the new and improved peace?! YES! Strong dislike for!

133. Guess what
This anti-war effort is not about FDR or Clinton.

It is about the illegal and immoral war that we are involved in now, the fake "war against terra" - the needless killings in Iraq and Afghanistan. A true "war on terra" would have the money wasted on this immoral war spent at home to secure the soft targets that surround each and everyone of us. It would have the money go toward the veterans hospitals and the military bases located in the States, making them the strongest and the best in the world. We would not be shutting them down to save money that is later spent on the illegal war that we are losing. The "war on terra" if actually fought would not include building 14 bases in another land. A "war on terra" would include finding ways to make ourselves less dependent on the precious oil that exists in that other region.

Some folks just don't see that what this is about is what is happening now. Our nation is less than it has ever been. We are a laughing stock to ALL of the nations in this world. We were once seen as a super power that no one messed with, but now the weed-n-chief and his minions have demonstrated that not only are we weak militarily, we don't give a flying f*ck for our military or the rights that once made us the nation that all others wanted to be like.

We are fighting and losing in an illegal and immoral war! We had no cause to attack and awe a sovereign nation or to invade the nation. For all I know, given the lies of this admin, Afghanistan was a mistake too. We completed the mission in Afghanistan a long time ago and should have pulled our troops out then.

I knew that Nixon was an asshole, it did not make me distrust my leaders and/or to consider all presidents assholes. Of course, it did make me realize that all presidents are humans and are capable of making mistakes. It was St. Raygun and Poppy that made me doubt all repukes and now the weed-n-chief makes me hate all neo-cons. Those sentiments come from experience.

Please try to fashion your arguments using actual facts and logic. :hi:

230. There are ways for kids to protest a war without name-calling.
I think that's the point. The war is wrong. End the war. Those are all anti-war statements, and are neutral to other people. I think people are objecting to the use of "ASSHOLES" in the sign. That is a personal attack on people, and not something a child should be experiencing developmentally at that age.

I was totally anti-war, but my parents never expressed that type of hostility toward other people in relation to it. Teaching a child how to oppose things without turning it into something personal is a valuable lesson in their life.

I suspect the photo was more about something amusing than actually teaching their children to call adults "assholes". I hope.

24. Teaching them to question authority is imperative. IMO.
Subvert the Dominant Paradigm. Would you rather the parents tell the children to respect their president? Give me a fucking break! "Wild child full of grace, savior of the human race." I'd call you you a freeper if it wasn't against the rules.

an asshole shits on the world, hence it is a perfect adjective for the Bu$hco Cabal. BTW, it is a fine line between hating and "not liking" or "not supporting" these assholes. I will take the anger and hate over quiet acceptance and approval any FREAKING day of the week. The people that go along for the ride scare the crap out me, the ones that hate them......they are my brothers and sisters.

97. I have mixed feelings
I'm a mom, although my kids are grown now. It's no big deal, really - all kids know the word "asshole" and my kids at that age would have been thrilled to have been allowed to hold a sign that said it, or to say it themselves, but they weren't allowed to say it. I'm not so sure that the "assholes" part is necessary, nor is it really a peaceful type thing to say. Two adorable kids, holding a peace-loving sign would be much more effective IMO without the word "assholes". I just sort of think that should be reserved for adults, and also detracts from the adorable kids wanting peace (and they ARE adorable).

I don't consider myself a prude at all, I don't really give a rats ass if the kids hold the sign up or not, but I do think it would be more effective without the "bad" language.

I know kids are able to understand right and wrong, and even that * IS an asshole, for that matter, although obviously at that age, they are still influenced heavily by their parents.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can understand a person's concern here, and I don't think anyone should be dismissed as a "freeper" because they feel that way.

On the other hand, my kids are 22 and 24, and I would LOVE if they were involved enough to carry signs saying "Stop the War, Asshole". I WISH they were concerned enough to become active, and if it were them holding that sign, I'd love it.

I just think it would be more effective, since the kids are so young, with a more peaceful, loving, type message.

100. well I've been
caught up with responding to these posts and I'm going to
drive down the block and have my mother upload more pics. They did paint some awesome peace type signs. And for the record, the word asshole was an idea from an adult...we were all having a good time and getting a little light headed from the sun and heat and someone said "oh wouldnt it be cute to add asshole to this stop the war sign" and we all laughed, and the kids of course with it being a taboo word said "yes, I will hold it" and thus the picture in question was born.
So it really was an innocent thing, but I do agree it speaks a thousand words, whether you agree with it or not.

140. Oh, I don't disagree
and I have to say your kids are ADORABLE once more - I can easily understand how the picture was born. Like I said in my previous post, it doesn't bother me, although I think it would be worth more than a thousand words if the wording were more kid-like, because those kids are gorgeous and innocent-looking, and the "assholes" does kind of detract from that a little.

I was NOT being critical though, or at least, I wasn't trying to be, I was just trying to defend the people who had a problem with it, and were accused of being freepers, because I can understand their thinking as well. It's not something I personally would worry about because we have so many important things to worry about - like the asshole and his war!

195. Normally I would agree with you, but it adds another layer...
I've only been on this site for a few days and I have seen many protest pictures.

This one is my favorite. By far. I liked it so much I read through this entire thread. Lost in all the discussion was the totality of the shot. That would not be there without the word "asshole". It didn't shock me, but it made me stop and look and try to fathom the meaning of it all. Really, just because the word "asshole" was there. There's a certain courage, or something, that yanks at me.

I think it should be tittled "Honor and Dignity"

Best photo I've seen, by far. (I think it works because no one doubts the asholliness of the guy.)

102. My kids are grown too
and when they were growing up I encouraged them to participate in political events with me. Both are fairly active today - we go to anti war rallies and we worked for the Kerry campaign last year.

But these kids in the pic are so young. If that sign didn't say 'asshole' and if those pictures of bu$h holding up his middle finger weren't behind them, I would have no problem with this pic. I certainly admire a parent who teaches children to speak out for the causes they support.

217. I don't think the word "asshole" is that big of a deal
If anything, it sends out the message that NO ONE, even the president of the US, is above accountability. Even the PRESIDENT, is not immune from dissent or criticism.

My husband and I make a concerted effort to teach our children to reject the idea of blind submission to authority along with other twisted ideals of the dominant paradigm. We do not want our children brainwashed and indoctrinated into the white patriarchal system.

219. I am no prude
but I did not let my kids say 'asshole' when they were the age of the kids in this pic. I can guarantee I would never have taken their picture holding a sign with that word on it. For one thing, it would have greatly upset my father.

Sure it is not that big of a deal, but it isn't a word that is appropriate for kids. They do get in trouble at school for saying it. If they use it in their written work, they would be strongly encouraged to change it. I wouldn't even consider publishing a piece of student writing with the word 'asshole' in it.

I absolutely detest the president and his neocon asshole partners in crime, but pictures like this do not help communicate that message.

225. My kids don't use words like that either
But they have heard all of the "swear words" out there and have read many of them in print.

Honestly, I would not have my children hold up a sign with "swear words" on it, but I just don't think it's a big deal, if some other parent chooses to do so. Some parents allow their children to USE swear words. Whatever. Using or not using certain swear words is not really a high priority. Using sexist, racist or homophobic slurs, on the other hand is. My children know that we do NOT use such words and that hate speech is wrong.

226. I think it's important for parents to teach their kids
WHEN it is okay to swear and when it isn't. If the kids can't figure that out, then the parents probably shouldn't curse around their kids or allow the kids to curse. Some kids have no problem understanding the cursing rules.

I do think it can be taken to an extreme. My nephew just freaked when I said "What the hell?" And his dad, my freeper BIL, asked me to please not use that kind of language around his child. :eyes:

247. That is what I have been trying to put into words
My kids have sworn a time or two (or three *wink*) and I didn't freak but said it is okay if they want to use that word in their home on occasion, but I told them I knew they knew better than to use it at school or in the company of people who would be offended. The result is that it is not a big deal to use those words, nor do they do it to shock people. Sometimes they just use the words.

111. Those kids don't hate anyone.....
They are kids, and they are taught by a very good Mom that what they see in the picture is wrong, and they are being taught by Me (their Grandmother) and their Mom that Bush and Crew are LIARS and war is wrong it's not Peace as the Prez would want us to believe. They protest with us regularly and we have peaceful protests, we don't use profanity in our protests, (this sign was made for a hoot, like Lon said they were getting heat giddy) but they do see what happens when we take it to the streets and the Bushies and the Pro War people come by, they see the birds fly and the filth fly from their mouths to us. We don't teach them to hate, but they are seeing how ignorant the Right is, and they can make up their own minds by what they are experiencing first hand. When we get the birds we flip back with the peace sign and say Thanks. That is what they are being taught. I rest my case!

I bet all of our kids here on DU are influenced by their parents to be Liberal. They cannot help it. My parents and ALL my brothers & sisters are Liberal. (I am lucky)If I asked my kids to paint protest signs I bet that they wouldn't be far from what these two kids painted. With no prodding.

so you see alot more of that here. At my youngest daughters end of school party I got to see about 70 7-10 year olds belting American Idiot (Green Day) at the top of their lungs. They knew all the words and played it over and over. It was a very Pink Floyd "we don't need no education" kind of moment, but it was live and it was my daughter.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.

Well that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.

And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.

a program with which I had the pleaseure to be associated (Disclosure) was canned, but the Fifth Estate is still good, and many of their shows were available online until the lockout ("the Unauthorized Biography of Dick Cheney") for example..and we have a large documentary unit that churns out dozens of long form investigative docs a year. If managment wins this though, I fear it will all begin to wilt. Once people have to re-get their jobs once a year or more, there will be more of an inclination to tow the line, to not make waves etc.

45. I have a question
I LOVE the pics, let me just say that. Great, beautiful, art. Look at the look on the blond boy's face in the last picture as he flashes the peace sign - powerful.

But I have to ask how the color of the sign changed in the last photo. All the other colors stayed the same.

132. First you need to upload pics to photobucket
Then when you have them uploaded right click on the pic you want to post control c the properties line paste into DU post then take out the th_ before the 100 or whatever to make a full sized pic. Th apparently means thumbnail pic. Give her a whirl... I fucked up for about an hour before I figured it out...

205. Being 15 in 1972 I grew up around the anti-war movement...
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 09:41 AM by stlsaxman
and no, we weren't "taught to hate", we never "spat on the troops" or called them "baby-killers". We were taught quite the opposite, in fact. We were taught compassion, respect and love for our fellow human beings, regardless.

Many were the days my little brother and I would walk home from school by crossing the SLU campus and be welcomed to take part in the "movement" by people not too much older than my brother and me, speaking truth to power and working to stop the madness that was Viet Nam so that they, and those of us quickly approaching draft age, wouldn't have to be that "last man to die for a lie".

That picture might have been my little brother and me. Unfortunately, there are no pics of us at those rallies. But the beautiful picture of these two boys will do quite nicely as a substitute! Thanks!

227. Funny photo, but reminds me of a story I heard recently.
A friend offered to babysit a mutual acquaintances child for the day. The child was under 8 years old. After a few hours with the child, they called to return the child to the parents. Seems that the child was obsessed with hating all things republican and Bush... so much so that the child was like a parrot. No matter what the subject, the child would make comments about Bush being a liar, republicans being evil and destroying the world.I mean, no subject or comment was safe. The child was imppossible to be around, and was doing this loudly in public places they were visiting, to the point of being painfully rude.

I was a very politically aware kid, but only really understood things fully when I hit 13 or so. Kids are basically mirrors of their parents, and they don't have the developmental level to process information they hear or are told repeatedly until way down the road. We all know as adults what passes for good manners when it comes to expressing our opinions, or we know that not every single republican is evil (and if some people here actually believe that, then I feel sorry for them). Kids get their info from their parents and they look for information that support the idea that their parents know everything and are right (until they hit around 13, then it goes the exact opposite direction, which is a whole nother story).

The kids are funny and cute in this photo. But I really hope the kids understand the nuances and that you don't really call adults "assholes", and it would be pretty awesome if the kids were that sophisticated at that age as to really understand what they are saying.

The younger one couldn't even say asshole, the older one is very intelligent and this household is nothing like what you describe! Children aren't given credit as little people. They pick up guns in Iraq to defend their country against the intruder U.S. The first U.S. soldier killed was by a child. Do you think for one moment that we want that here in the U.S.? Our children are not obsessed as you describe this polly parrot child. Someone has obviously not given that child enough attention.

242. those are my kids in the pic
and they aren't even allowed to say "freak" much less asshole......this pic was born out of adults getting heat giddy (115) degrees and we had a good laugh..........this is not teaching kids to hate. My kids were hot and bored, and at the point of this picture they wanted to go home to play with their friends. They were troopers and helped all morning and into the afternoon in the heat making signs. Your story BTW sounds ridiculous.......could be true, I don't know........but hardly an appropriate comparison for my boys or this pic.

234. There are different ways of expressing our displeasure
of this war. I probably wouldn't have chosen this form of expression. But we are all on the same team, so I think we should concentrate on our common goals instead of the technicalities.

256. I'm sure you're right.
We've all got our own ways of raising kids, and I'm sure they're doing fine. Obviously our boundaries are different. Que' sera' sera'.

244. yeah well
they made a sign that said "stop the war" An adult at this paint party made the suggestion to add "asshole" and have the kids hold it to take a pic..........Im going to refrain from explaining this anymore. Anyhow, it was innocent, it was VERY funny at the time, and holding a sign that say's the word asshole IMO is far more noble and just than holding a sign that say's "VIVA BUSH" or ANY OTHER W sign..........in fact, where did this come from?....... "*" is it because "Bush" when speaking about the Prezeldent is such a foul word that people refuse to use it?

Edit: Reading further through the thread, I understand now that these are your kids. Therefore, it's entirely your business and it isn't my place to criticize.

240. This is a time when we must call it like it is.
This is not a time to be sitting with our ankles together, wearing little white gloves and pink bonnets, sipping tea, keeping politely quiet and watching our Ps and Qs according to polite society.

Now is a time to call a LIAR a LIAR and PROFITEER a PROFITEER and a CRIMINAL a CRIMINAL and a MURDERER a MURDERER and an ASSHOLE an ASSHOLE.

People are dieing.
