Start stocking up on your can goods. Here comes the real chaos. |
|
When the oil runs dry the grocery store shelves will run dry. Everything we purchase is delivered by truck or plane. First fuel runs out at service stations. Then the store shelves get bare and that creates the panic. As a result of the chaos there will be Martial Law. A word to the wise, start stocking up on the canned goods.

2. The truck drivers were considering a strike when gas hit $2.50 |
|
It's headed to $4.00 and beyond now. I'm afraid you're right, this is the breaking point. It's not going to be pretty.

You really think the US is going to run out of gas because a few refineries go down for a few weeks?

I'm not going to ridicule you about how much attention you're paying, because I have no idea how much attention you're paying.
Just like you with me.

The disruption in oil supplies will be a major economic pain, but will not stop all transport. Those oil pipelines and platforms don't supply all of the oil, just a large enough chunk of it to hurt. Store shelves won't go bare, but there will be spot shortages. There will be inflation and gas prices will soar, but there will be gasoline.
However ... in the long run, your scenario is probably going to be more accurate than you know.

23. We didn't have 'just in time inventory' in the 70's, give us a Link |
|
A link to reliable estimates on how much food is stockpiled in any given area.
Corporate looters have imperilled National Security by eliminating warehousing and warehouses.
There is an illusion of plentiful goods in the US, the reality is far
more precarious.

17. Look on the bright-side ... |
|
... The liveries and horse-cart drivers are expecting a serious windfall.
For all those right wing, libertarian (let the market take care of everything) puke festers, THIS is the type of scenario that those of us advocating conservation and higher CAFE standards were advocating.
Those running their cars on french fry grease should be largely unaffected. But in the long term there is only so much french fry grease to go around. We will need bio-diesel based on high yield crops that have multiple harvests in the same year .... HEMP!!!!!

21. No panic, but having supplies around is just common sense |
|
You never know when everyday, regular, non-terrorist, non-martial-law flooding, blizzard, ice storm, earthquake, tornado, wildfire, electrical grid problems, etc. etc. could happen in your area.
We should ALL have water and food in reserve all the time. It just makes good sense.

24. Even common sense can get you flamed around here. |
|
I've been flamed more than once for telling folks its just plain common sense to keep emergency supplies of food and water stocked in their homes.
My partner and I stock more than we need because we know that should an emergency arise we will be feeding some of our neighbors as well.

25. Normally I wouldn't worry about food. |
|
I put out a large garden every year. This year we had a drought (MO) that was severe enough to qualify for federal aid. My garden died. There was nothing there this year. I can't afford for food to go up any higher. We'll be in big trouble.
