Poll question: DU relationship poll: Let's assess the hook-up potential here
Seems to me there have been a number of new and blossoming relationships around here to add to the ones that already have been established. Just thought a poll was in order to see how many hook-ups and love matches DU has been partially responsible for.

Answer at the highest level that your relationship has gone. I think I've touched all the bases, but knowing the creative people around here, I've probably missed something.

So, answer anonymously in the poll and feel free to expand on your answer below. Any new couples we should be congratulating?

Last, why do you think people here have gotten together? What about this place helps make it possible? Any pointers for those still looking?

1. I have been keeping tabs on this blossoming
relationship between whoisalhedges and matcom, from a purely scientific stance of course:

sheesh I went to pick up my kid at camp and then some shopping and I have missed all the salient developments. And now he is on to marrying various and sundry other folks. Trigamy? Take him for all he's got, kiddo. Although you might be lucky given the gaseous discharge commentary.

4. I've had email/DU mail exchanges
with a couple of DUers but it hasn't gone beyond that. One person eventually married someone else. :P Oh well.

But several others I've since been interested in are still around.

I'm a little skittish about long-distance relationships though as he would pretty much have to volunteer to move here if it turned out to be a good thing.

5. Well, I am married to a DUer but we met 11(!) years ago so it really
doesn't count (what cracks me up is that maybe a third of DU knows we're married, and another third would be shocked to find out...)

I think it's pretty easy to get crushes on relatively anonymous posters -- I'm a very word-oriented person so in person, it's conversation (rather than "hotness" or athletic abiliity or whatever) that's going to get me interested; I think it works the same way with the written/posted word, for many people. It's also relatively safe -- distance and anonymity, and all that.

I've had online crushes before (and still get them occasionally -- marriage doesn't make one dead, after all) -- little fleeting crushes on DUers (that go away quickly when the object of said crush says posts dumb later), and bigger ones when I was on Prodigy in the early 1990s (I still talk to one, but I no longer have a crush on him, and besides, he's since come out). It's all fun.

A heavy duty e-mail/chat/phone thing awhile back. Discussed meeting....
other things to deal with on both ends (yes, I'm soooo terrible :P), so that was that for the relationship basically. We'll see as far as that.

A bit of chatting with a male friend that got flirty on occasion, but we know where we stand and we're just friends.

I slept in Matcom's bed once. Does that count for anything?

16. Be very careful
It's like meeting someone out of a personal ad from the newspaper except you might feel like you know them even more but you don't because you only know what they want you to assume about them.

What they post could be a make belief life and they could be sitting in a prison typing everything in from the prisons computer. Once they are out...bingo...they want to meet you and you think that you know the person but you don't.

It's hard to explain but I wouldn't go out with someone from a newspaper ad because I would be too afraid to and you should watch out for people that are on messages boards also.

I am more then an honest person and that's one of my faults. Thinking that all people are honest is another one of my faults.

Look at what's in the media these days about men killing women. I don't think that they met over the Internet either.

If I could turn back the hands in time I would but I can't so moving on is a better choice.

Please watch out everyone.

I have warm fuzzies for a few folks and really enjoy their wit. But I think it would be hard to have a crush on someone you never saw. Guess I need a few pherenomes floating around. Also I'm married, so crushes have to stay in my head.

I think it is really cool that folks have found a good partner here though.

47. It's easier to detect BS in a person in person
After someone has built up lies for several years it would be hard to detect because even the bullshitter would believe his own lies.

What I dealt with was PO Boxes, pre-paid cell phones = work and home numbers which he answered both so it wasn't really a work number if you catch my drift, pre-paid credit cards so that there was no way of tracing his movements from state to state....he always bragged about not being able to be found if the gun with my name on it ever went off (No Joke).

Please watch out people like that are always looking for their next date just in case an order of protection prevents them from seeing their last SO.

24. Elaborating a bit...
Online crushes, in general, are pretty easy. Even with pictures, the person on the other end of a screen name can be whoever you want him/her to be. They're hypothetical, and can fill whatever gap you have in your life.

It's also reasonably risk-free -- my online crushes, past and present, have all been unrequited, and presently, I'm of course keeping it that way. I think it's easier, actually, to have an online crush than a real-life one -- no risk of getting tongue-tied and saying something dumb -- and if "eyesroll" says something dumb to "anonymousposter123," it's really not a big deal; whereas if Stacie says something dumb to, oh, "cute co-worker" (which, no, I don't have, but you know what I mean), it becomes a bigger problem.

Once you know them in person, more things become known and more things you imagine become impossible. Sometimes, that's a good thing (the axe murderer you feared is really the nice guy/gal who posts), and sometimes, it's not (the nice poster is really the axe murderer).

find out about what is being written in a "flirtatious" way. I promise you, many of the SO's don't find it so innocently cute.

Nor do people that have been stalked.

Flirt with caution, whether online, or at the bar-

So long as it's not stalking, no biggie.

But, yes, if your SO is not on the same page as you are, do proceed with caution. One person's harmless flirtation is another person's cheating...

were with man bears well known to me for many years.

Some of my best friends were met on line.

77. One problem with all of this: distance.
I know it can be overcome, but dammit, it sure as all hell makes things difficult. :evilfrown:

78. I hear you man...
But geography has never been much of an impediment for me. I've been a nomad since I left my parents' home... each new place is an adventure for me, and I've already grown tired of Florida after a few years there.

I certainly never expected to meet someone living near me who meshes with me so well... always a price I guess. Short-term... I'm seeing her tonight, so all is well with the world.

:)

80. I wish I had that ability.
I'm just too damned practical to pick up and move.

Add that to the fact that I just bought a house...isn't stability attractive? :7

87. Damn! I'm just like those evil-doers in the James Bond movies.
I let too much of the plot out, and end up with my secret lair exploding while James Bond gets the girl!

:D

To say I'd take a bath on the house now is an understatement. Now...in a year or so, we'll see.
