Brook Trout!

The ones I caught today were a lot smaller than the one in the photo but it was a good day on the water non-the-less.

Now it is time for

This photo has been posted for your piscatorial pleasure and has been brought to you by Redneck Socialist and a size 12 Yellow Humpy.

6. White Mountains up in NH.
Whiteface River. More of a large stream than a river. We has a lot of rain yesterday and the water was high and cold. Still Managed a few though.

I wouldn't feel too bad about being down in LA. The bass fishing is pretty damn good from what I hear.

8. i don't know how to catch bass....
largemouth, that is. i have caught smallmouth in Connecticut. I used to fish a little bit up your way--maine, vermont, PA.

I should try harder down here but I'm not into slow muddy water. I guess I need to go for the specks and redfish in the Gulf.

The good news is that I usually spend a month or two every year out West on some beautiful trout streams (mostly Oregon).

9. Never fished Oregon...
...but I've made it out to Montana a few times. Do you do any steelhead fishing while you're out there?

I actually spend more time bass fishing than trout. If you can get past the whole Bass Master/NASCAR type image, bass fishing is a hell of a lot of fun. The aesthetics are a bit different than fly fishing though.

10. i was trying to post a pic of a steelhead....
that I caught last fall out in Oregon...I had a nice trip around Nov. 1--four steelhead landed each day, on a two-day trip. Got 'em on the flyrod, which was nice.

I didn't have any luck posting the pics--I guess you can't post directly from your computer but only from webpages.

I have read a few books on flyrod bassfishing. Each time I get excited and think I've finally got it figured out--but then I go out on the water somewhere around here and don't even see a trace of a bass. I should probably bite the bullet and hire a guide.

Like you I've fished in Montana a few times--Madison and Yellowstone. By the way, my user name is an allusion to my favorite trout stream, in the desert of SE Oregon.

I envy you for the fact that you can just head out to your local stream when you get the urge. I don't foresee doing any trout fishing until March, when I might spend a week or so on the San Juan.

16. I used to live in
Texas before I moved to Washington and along the gulf coast of LA you can tie into some nice specs and reds on the fly. Clousser minnow patterns. Now if your real bold and you have a 10 wt fly rod and arms like a linebacker you can got after jackfish, the bulldozer of the gulf.

4. That is one hell of a nice Brook Trout! on a size 12?
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 07:28 PM by Mikimouse
I am most definitely going to go back to my bigger flies. I use Royal Humpy patterns for Rainbow and Brown (not much interest from the Browns, they're more responsive to streamers). The folks around here tend to use the size 16s and 18s, and it drives me nuts (largely because I can't see them in the water very well. I have always had much better luck with size 8 or 10 flies, especially Black Ants and Humpies. Where do you fish? I am currently fishing in the White River in the tailwaters just below Beaver Lake in Arkansas.

7. I didn't catch the one in the photo, unfortunately.
Just some picture I pulled off the web. The ones I caught today were much smaller.

I was fishing the Whiteface River up in the White Mountains in NH. Nothing was hatching so I was just throwing big attractor flies. Those small patterns are tough to see especially in faster water. We had a lot of rain yesterday so the water was up. I figured something big would be easier for both the fish and for me to see.

11. That's a beautiful part of the country...
I have fished the Ammonousic (spelling is incorrect, but it has been many years) river just outside Franconia, and caught some nice rainbows, but no Brookies. There was another fisherman a little upstream from me who caught one very nice Brookie and showed it to me. Gorgeous native Brook trout.

14. NH has started to manage some bodies of water for wild trout.
If they keep with it we will have more opportunities to catch native, wild fish. Not the factory produced fish tossed into the rivers in order to keep the license money flowing into the state. If we hadn't so screwed up the ecosystem to begin with the state wouldn't have to mass produce fish for people to catch. Ill stop the rant there, because I could go on forever. It is a particular pet peeve of mine.

I haven't fished the Ammonoosuc in a while. I've been spending more time in the "back country." Smaller streams further in away from the crowds. The fish are generally smaller, but there are fewer people, the fish are more likely to be wild, or at least native and for me at least, the experience is better.

13. Not a big sage fan
I don't often keep the trout I catch but when I do they go straight into the pan with butter, lemon, salt and pepper. Simple, quick, easy and damn tasty IMHO.
