How liberal is Gainesville, FL? |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 12:43 AM by ButterflyBlood
I'm wondering since it's one of the meccas of punk rock so it would make sense if it was, but I hear it's kind of near Jacksonville (which does have quite a few good bands despite being a political hellhole...and also the home of Limp Bizkit :puke:)

1. Gainesville is a college town. |
|
That probably explains the music scene there.

3. Yeah, more than likely. |
|
College towns tend to be a bit more liberal than average. However, what some people call punk these days isn't as politically charged as the original music was.

5. How liberal is Gainesville Florida? |
|
I just moved here to Gainesville about four months ago, and I can tell you I like it a whole lot better than Atlanta, where I lived for twenty years. Being a new arrival, and middle-aged, I don't know much about the music scene. But judging by the editorials in the paper, and the existence of things like a strong recycling program, bicycle lanes everywhere, and the number of anti-war yard signs I saw back in March, I'd have to say it's not bad for a small town. Having lived in DeKalb County, Georgia during the 2000 election, and now living in Florida, I'm looking to hook up with some locals concerned with promoting a verifiable paper trail for elections. Anyone interested?

10. Don't know Gainesville but |
|
conservative suburban hell holes and angry punk rock go hand-in-hand. Cf. Orange County, California.

but for the most part conservative places aren't known for their punk scenes. conservative areas with good scenes:
Sioux Falls, SD Virginia Beach Orange County Jacksonville as mentioned
that's about it. aside from Gainesville the top places are probably:
San Francisco Washington DC Philadelphia and the Jersey suburbs New York City Minneapolis/St. Paul
all liberal strongholds
