Training Day on cable, USA. Denzel Washington is a bad, bad man. |
|
It's kind of too bad--this movie had SO MUCH potential, and I had really anticipated it from the awesome previews.
I really like the earlier part of the movie, how you're kind of left with some abiguity on whether his character is the world's best, most streetsmart supercop, or the most evil and corrupt.
Great bit parts from Snoop and Macy Gray too. I like the Scott Glenn crony cop, his character hints at worlds of evil committed.
Too bad the movie degenerates into the silly typical shootemup ending, probably could have had something more ambiguous, sinister and interesting, more consistent with the tone of the movie.
I loved Denzel's performance but thought his Oscar was more a reward for past work.

1. I have never seen that...I was really surprised Denzel won that year |
|
because the movie got such bad reviews they usually don't honor the actors in them. Like I said, haven't seen it--but I did think he should have been nominated for Philadelphia--Tom Hanks was very good, but Denzel stole the scenes when they were on camera together.

But I thought Denzel was incredible. He was in character from the moment he hit the screen and never faltered. A truly amazing performance. Movie sucked, though.

5. I thought his character was one of the most intensely scary and cunning |
|
villains I'd seen. Weak vehicle though.

4. The Academy has a great way of rewarding past work. |
|
Overall, I've been satisfied with who has been recognized/not.
Denzel I think got an award for past work, as did Whoopi Goldberg.
Sean Penn was due one, and his role in "Mystic River" afforded that opportunity.
Johnny Depp is due one...Neverland is not the role, though.
I'm enormously irritated at this whole Jamie Foxx thing. Seems kind of a bit much, but in honesty I've not seen either of his nominated films. Just from clips I can tell he did Ray Charles well, but I wonder if mimicry (particularly if you can call up the subject and ask questions) deserves more recognition than going from scratch. Most of the noms are for biopics though...so there's that.
I don't know. He seems like a good guy , and I wouldn't feel badly if he won.
