My Dumb Dog

was outside this morning and decided to lay down and roll around on his back in the driveway like he does when he is in a really good mood. Unfortunately, he chose to do this under a large tree. The end result being that he rolled around in fresh bird poop which he now has embedded in the hair all over his little bod. Did I mention that he is a long haired dog? And did I mention that I don't really have time to tie him up to the tree outside, carry warm water out and bathe him and then blow dry him this morning? And did I mention that there is no way he is coming back inside the house where he lives until he is freshly scrubbed and dried?

He is really a nice friendly loving happy dog - even if sometimes he is a really dumb dog.

2. And better yet, he probably did this on purpose.

Most dogs have an instinct to roll around in poop of any kind. It makes the dog smell like the background scents, and thus they can stalk their prey easier.

I know, most dogs' prey is now the food dish, but old instincts die hard, thus, they'll roll in bird poop, horse poop, virtually any poop.

Sorry this happened to you, but still and all, you've got to love the mutts. I had a dog one time that decided that the best way to impress his girlfriend was to go swimming around for awhile. . .in a lagoon. Just another fine mess.

5. Ahhhh, That explains it

this is the same dog that has caught 3 birds in the back yard. Fortunately, I have rescued all before they were afflicted with anything more serious that outright fright.

10. Yeppers, he WANTS to smell like bird poop

So that he can better sneak up on the birdies.

14. Perhaps some nice scented doggie shampoo and conditioner

would disrupt his sense of smell enought to make the poop smell a little less attractive. Then again probably not.

Maybe I should just put up a scarecrow so the birds will move to my neighbors tree.

13. My dog does that

We get alot of Rabbits in the yard and they leave droppings. In the summertime if he ever comes accross any little piles (which he searchs out), he will attempt to run his face in them.

Preventing this requires persistant vigiliance.

He will even sometimes do this with his Heartworm pill which I generally wrap in Cheese to get him to take. He'll somehow seperate the pill from the cheese, sniff it and then try to rub his face in it. Kind of funny to watch.

for that heartworm pill.

Come to think of it, I guess bird poop washes out easier than peanut butter would.

3. what smells good to him often doesn't to humans

My cat Jesco has an obsession with green olives and green olive brine. I caught him rolling around in a party tray of green olives during christmas one year.

I love green olives, and i'll give him one to play with every now and again. He'll carry it around and paw paw at it all day like it was catnip.

peanut butter is the equivalent of dog catnip. At least for my tow little doggies.

4. Aww, take 5 minutes to go out and wash him, and don't worry about

the blow dry. He'll try in the house during the day, and you can brush him tonight.

If you think this can't be done, it can! I have 3 little Bichons, and they are supposed to be blowdried all the time too, but if works out just fine if you don't...just not as fluffy.

He'll be fine if I leave some extra towels for him to lounge on - and I will be fine if I close off the room with the new furniture so that he cannot lounge there until dry.

and other flying nasties if they get close enough to her. I tell her it's not a good plan, but she ignores my advice. Once she even got stung on her nose.

Good protein. Especially big bumblebees and carpenter bees. His labs also eat whole pecan nuts as they fall from his trees, and i've seen them kill and eat harmless corn snakes like they were rawhide bones.

Country labs will probably eat steel ball bearings if you let them.

16. I knew a dog once

that caught a bee and was stung in the mouth. Poor dog was allergic and her tongue swelled. She nearly suffocated and died. Had her owner not been there and lived within a mile of a vet she probably would have.

My folks used to ranch cattle and they had a dog that was half lab and half cocker. That dog would eat anything. The most disgusting was cow placenta.
