Most dogs have an instinct to roll around in poop of any kind. It makes the dog smell like the background scents, and thus they can stalk their prey easier.

I know, most dogs' prey is now the food dish, but old instincts die hard, thus, they'll roll in bird poop, horse poop, virtually any poop.

Sorry this happened to you, but still and all, you've got to love the mutts. I had a dog one time that decided that the best way to impress his girlfriend was to go swimming around for awhile. . .in a lagoon. Just another fine mess.
