6. Seriously, myself gives me hope to go on
I'm always curious to see what I will do, so I keep on going; plus there is a lot more that I want to do, so I keep on going.

Even through the shit, perhaps especially through the shit, this is what gets me through.

That and remembering that, hey, at least I'm not in the ICU with a trache and renal failure and no family to visit and my body is wasted away so much that I can't even use the alphabet mat to communicate with people, and where I will die alone and unconscious. Seeing people like that makes me realize that, hey, my shit is bad, and it's worth being anxious about, but it's not as bad as it could be.

69. Someone's been watching the first Conan movie
I remember seeing that movie in the theatre. It's the first line Governor Gropenator says in the movie, and it's about 1/4 of the way through. He delivered that line so woodenly, with such a heavy Austrian accent, that the entire theatre burst out laughing - which was probably NOT the director's intent.

3. My 22month old son
Have a child sometime inquiring mind, you will see what I mean. My son credits me with putting up all light sources, including the moon and the sun, he points and says "Dada, lights! Dada did." And he gives me a kiss anytime I ask. And my lovely wife of course. LOVE gives hope I guess.

9. My son just heard me read yours aloud to my wife
and started screaming luvyoudoodada over and over again, so I guess you know what I mean. Having kids is where it's at, approach aging with a smile folks (I'm 27, so I guess I've just started aging...). Having kids is like an admission of mortality that you don't actually have to speak out loud. It means everything is going to be okay, if you let it.

10. Life keeps getting better for me
I used to have problems just getting along in society. I used to be very anti-social to the point that I was actually afraid of people. I spent a lot of time running away from problems.

I'm much better now. There's still a lot of room for improvement, but I can function in society like a normal person now. I've been on the brink of suicide on more than one occasion but now the thoughts of death and ending it all have stopped.

Your question makes me think that if I can make the kind of progress I've made in the last six months then what will I be like in a year? I'm getting there, man, and it's due to some caring people and drug therapy.

There is so much to life....
you must stay my friend. Let me say this, I've had problems too, I've been an extreme alcoholic (and still am a mild, controlled alcoholic, I've been beyond that), but life is what you make it. Value it more than anything and it will become of value to you. You know, whenever I heard someone speak of (noncarnal) beauty I thought "what a faker", but I am actually at the point now where that can see a leaf floating in the wind and see the beauty, and it's unspeakable. So look forward friend, and believe in the human experience. That's all it takes, a little faith and optimism. Just look forward and don't worry. We all are just like you. Volunteer for a childrens program sometime, or volunteer for some other group, help people, help improve the human condition in others. Join the Kucinich campaign!

Anyone who opposes George Bush, or corporate corruption in general, has a calling. And have you taken a close look at the public education scene? It's a complete wasteland, pulverized by Republicans and Democrats alike, and there are virtually no adults to speak for the children.

30. Np argument with the views on public education, but
the arguments we hear constantly about student laziness or lack of motivation are simply distractors from the real problems. We have indoctrinated our children to consumerism, and they equate success not with learning, but with the accumulation of material goods. Since critical thikning is not necessary for them to be able to purchase that new car, it is not considered to be valuable. This is not terribly surprising, and I find it in my CC and four year university students constantly. Getting them to think is a great challenge and I truly love what I do.

37. High School sucks...
Just wait it out. It's great when you're done, just wait for your first college party, where everyone is anonymous, it's wonderful (for a while). College is the un-doing that everything high school prepared you for (because it's mostly meaningless). Just wait until you're sitting across from some Teaching major, and see how stupid they are, it's great, they hang out together in confused clusters: these are the future teachers of America! So hang in there...all of the popular people will be ugly in 10 years for one reason or another, and they'll all still be in the subarbs as insurance agents or real estate agents, it's great.

If it werent for them I wouldnt be here today.

And you stick around too, your children need you, and always will. Let me tell you, I'm 27, and my mom died 3 years ago, and my dad last fall, and kids need their parents at 27. But it was my young baby boy who allowed me to bypass the grieving process with my dad: I figured he would want me to celebrate his life through loving my own family all that much more, and that's what I did. And it worked. There was little grief. Anyway, look ahead to the future, and don't give up on marriage as the greatest institution of happiness available.

39. Reason to live and hope are not the same thing...
at least not in my book.

What gives me hope - I have a 14 year old niece and a 4 year old nephew. They are beautiful people and I feel good knowing that one day the world will be in their hands. I believe in people - that we will evolve and grow and become something more than we are now - that is where my hope lies.

What gives me reason to live - my family, old friends, new friends, the possibility that there's love out there somewhere, ice cream, good books, music, a cool breeze blowing through the window on a hot day, the smell of rain, silver bright crescent moons, great sex, poetry, blackberries fresh from the bush, homemade chocolate birthday cake, swinging on the swings at the park. This is merely the beginning of the list. The world is full of wonder.

47. My life pretty much ended 20 years ago
I had committed a horrific crime for which no court but that of my own conscience could convict me. I never thought I could go on, or worse, that there was much point in doing so. I became a soulless machine, whirring and thumping and clattering without purpose. The waves of ordinary life tossed me forward: going to work, paying my bills, feeding my body, keeping up the appearance of a life.

Looking back, I am astonished at the wonders I've seen, the wisdom I have learned and the remarkable people I have known since my purported death. If history is any teacher, more astonishment lies ahead. I'm generally not a very happy person, or very successful at anything, but I don't want to miss out on what's coming.

98. If you must know, the short story is...
I was my friend's only "lifeline" and I didn't take that role seriously. Though he wasn't rich and didn't use a gun, this poem is otherwise startlingly appropriate.

Richard Corey
by Edward Arlington Robinson

WHENEVER Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

60. Two words: Tuna Helper

OK, I'm kidding about that.

One of my biggest pleasures in life is my humongous record and CD collection. I also love being on the radio, playing with animals and small children, and holding out hope that the world can (and will) be a better place for everybody.

Sound a bit cliched? Sorry!

As it turns out, it's not the same old shit all the time. There is progress, and I'm part of it. Small victories sustain me. And some of them are really quite small.

Also, I love reading. I've never been so bookish, I can't keep up with it all.

67. My children give me a reason to live
I guess that's the standard answer for those of us who are parents, but it is the truth because it does give us some kind of selfless purpose outside of our own heads. Also, there's still many other things I haven't done or achieved and would like to which keep me going.

I think another question could be what makes you feel alive? I think that might be harder to answer though at times. Too many times I simply find myself going through the motions these days.

82. That's a positive spin...
I know how you feel.

And you're right. It will get better. Always hope it will get better soon. That's why we keep living, I dare say. Hope it will get better. (of course, we're also too chicken to do ourselves in either, which is one of nature's ways of keeping us alive. It's amazing. Nature did the world a lot of good things. Enter mankind into the issue and look what has happned: Species die off at phenomenal rates. We pollute and abuse our environment and waste resources. We'll slaughter each other at the drop of a needle, even before you hear Candace Bergen saying "Can you hear me now?" We allow the wealthy to usurp the Constitution and make others suffer in turn. With the supporters saying "That's the way it is, get over it" and yet nobody fights for the truth or the Constitution. I could go on for days...)

It will get better. Hopefully before 2004. For people like us, the country, or the world.

Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 07:27 PM by Durtal
The balance of pros and cons to going on is always in danger of shifting its weight to the other foot. It's precarious. Sometimes it seems like there's enough reason, but others, nope. I mean there's always SOME reason, but whether it's a GOOD ENOUGH reason is the question. There are lots of reasons to just quit, too. Too damned many of them.

Not a good day. Not a good three and a half decades, either.

89. I want to see how the story goes
It's been kind of interseting so far even though I've hit a rut. I've seen other people's stories too, which sometimes overlap with my story. Our lives are linked. Even now, we are linked by reading and responding to these posts. God is the Great Author and we are all part of the story.
Maybe, I am just high and take writing and literature too seriously. That's how I've thought of the world lately. Maybe "The Never Ending Story" was onto something, though.

Looking forward to winter. Looking forward to summer and motorcycle camping. My kitties. My beautiful daughter, living and learning at UAB in Birmingham and making A's after nearly dropping out of high school and 2 extra years of reflection. DU. Fellow-minded friends and coworkers.

And the Aurora, which has been amazingly strong and bright so far this year.

And the Yukon Quest, which starts in Fairbanks this year, so I'll be volunteering again.

And the Red Green Raft Race based on the best Canadian show on PBS, really strikes home here in Fairbanks.

And volunteering for Tony Knowles for Senate to unseat smarmy, Repuke Lisa Murkowski, appointed by her father.

And helping my across-the-street neighbor win his campaign for City Council. (He did!)

92. Two D's and a W
My daughter has kept me alive for over 35 years. I knew that she'd be special and was probably the reason I was born in the first place. She is special and she won't let me die - ever.

The other D is my dog. He's almost 13 and has classic German Shepherd hip problems - minus displasia. Bruce, the dog, doesn't have any thumbs so can't open the door or his bottles of pills. His daddy can't remember how many of each pill he gets. (Bruce can count his pills and knows when one is missing.) One furry guy with no thumbs and another with no brain! I've got to stay alive for my dog's sake. (Besides, my daughter won't take any excuse for me not attending her 112th birthday party. See what I mean about "ever?")

The W is for an illusion I entertain that I might be, could be, or maybe am a writer. There are at least 4,000 ideas duking it out in my brain right now, waiting to be written. I can't die until they're all written into shitty first drafts to be bequeathed to my 113-year-old daughter. ;-) Hopefully, there will be a few published before then so she won't have to work on them all.

I hope that all the writers at DU live long enough to write all the ideas in their heads. And may the rest of you live long enough to buy the books.

'Scuse me. I've got to go write something now. I'll see you all at rbnyc's 112th birthday party and maybe even sooner.

95. My kids give me a reason to keep on living
and creating things is what helps me enjoy it.

As do friends, good books/music/art/food/challenging ideas/textures/colors/sensations and the wildness of nature.

Sometimes I don't have hope. I just keep going anyway.

If there is something OUT THERE that is externally GIVING me reasons and hope (something spiritual, for instance) - well - sometimes I wonder about that. I don't expect to know.
