Daily baby thread #2-Do I HAVE to garden with the baby monitor on?
Every baby monitor package that we looked at featured a picture of the someone gardening with the Parent Unit (so you won't get confused about which to leave in the nursery) attached to their belt on the handy dandy belt clip (a two way walkie talkie system would have been more useful) outside gardening and looking pretty damned happy about it.

So, do I HAVE to go outside and garden? Plenty to do out there.

First time parent here any advise on this matter will be a plus.

1. We didn't have those when our kids were babies
So I don't know what to tell you.

We had to listen the old fashioned way - with our ears.

But if you are looking for an excuse to get out of gardening - a new baby would work.

5. We had no monitors back in the stone age
Our babies came equipped with VERY LOUD cries..(standard equipment on the older models)..

10. I used to wake up
right before they did. It was weird - like I had a sixth sense or something. And when they were itty bitty, I put them down for naps right in the same room where we were. I figured they needed to get used to family noise sooner or later. And it was easier to keep an eye on them while they were sleeping.

12. I could have mine, asleep in a sling and VACUUM, but if I tippy-toed
into their room to get something, they would wake up :)

2. We didn't use a monitor almost ever
But we had a pretty small house relative to many these days (1100 sq. ft). I can see if you have a bigger house or want to spend time in a basement or other end of the house in a closed room where you might need it!

But no, you don't have to garden ;)

4. My wife said NO to my idea about a screen door
I saw it on HGTV or something and thought it might be a good idea-keeps the pets out (there would surely be some climbing involved) and allows for listening when she isn't with us or in the bassonette in the bedroom.

1800 sq. feet tri-level here. Down here in the rec room you can't really hear much on the top/bedroom level-this was a big selling point for my wife.

6. When we brought a baby home, we stripped them down to diaper
and laid them on a blanket so the dog and cat could sniff them (we were right there too), and we left a blanket that had their scent, on the couch so the pets could get used to them being there.. After a few days, both the cat and dog were not at all interested in the kid:)

9. I brought home her first cap and a swaddling blanket from the hospital
I put the blanket on a table that our cats lay on most of the day so they could recognize the scent. The boy cat is still scared of *IT*, the girl at least has sniffed her out.

11. I didn't ever have one. Somehow my children found the correct decibel
level and pitch to grab my attention no matter where I happened to be.

btw, she's gorgeous! Good job, Daddy and Mommy.

18. Wow, she's so cute! Congratulations!
Nope, you don't have to garden, but you do have to prepare your own organic baby food made out of tender, newly harvested beets from the remote, non-polluted section of Washington State, which have been rinsed three times in fresh, filtered spring water.

Hope you've got that part covered...

19. just a beautiful beautiful baby congratulations
Not only did we not have a baby monitor, we never had a stroller, highchair, or theme decorated nursery, and our daughter managed to become a fine young women in spite of it all.

Oh yeah, she never had a sip of formula and we used cloth diapers too.

Our version of stroller was a backpack carrier, highly recommended.
She had a little rolling chair with tray that went all the way around it and she ate there. When she was bigger, she had a booster seat made of a large box of books..

We did have a little clip on chair that was very useful and because she remained very petite, we were able to use for quite some time. We would just hang it on the table and she was right there with us.

Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 10:28 PM by Whoa_Nelly
You want your daughter to think you're a slacker when it comes to making home important????

BTW..Baby monitor if it makes you feel better...never had one (son is 26 years old), but have used one with g-daughter sometimes when I take long term care of her...'cept she's three now, but will probably use monitor again for new g-son due in October...course, am partially deaf (hereditary deafness...worse with age), and even with hearing aids, would definitely set up a monitor while kids are napping, etc., and I'm awake doing things.

But, DAMMIT, Underpants! Get out there and garden NO MATTER WHAT!!

PS She is absolutely Darling!!! Major Congrats!!!
