Those of you outside the US: What brings you to DU?
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 09:06 PM by ih8thegop
Why are you on DU?

Did you leave the US because of how bad things have gotten?

Were you interested in learning more about the US and the mess we're in?

Do you despise Bush, and want to know about his opposition?

2. I was hoping to find some sort of...

...segment of the US population who haven't been completely brainwashed by Bush, Rush, Faux News, 9/11-inspired flag-patriotism, homophobia, xenophobia, revenge fantasies, political perversions of religious beliefs, and terrible music.

I lucked out, I think.

on edit: and who can tolerate my terrible typos.

3. I was glad to find a place where Americans were aware of what a
shit your president is...A lot of American TV (we get all the U.S.A networks here in Canada) gives the impression that Americans are all rah rah for the president no matter what a moron he is...He's your beloved president, right or wrong...Since I found this place I've discovered how many of you are as worried about Bush's effect on the world as we are...:)

4. concern brought me here
Concern and despair for our wonderful neighbours to the south. They're a little rowdy, but fun to have around. Ever since Bush* stole the election and was appointed to office there has been a dark cloud over America. It's been a feeling that I couldn’t shake or express properly in words..And then the unbelievable happened on 9/11, and I watched a terrorized nation loose her freedom, and liberty, stolen by the very people sworn to defend them. I wondered many times what kind of government does this to their own citizens. I was "shocked and awed" as I sought the truth and discovered the PNAC.The idiots wrote it all down. And now Iraq....when will this nightmare end? Thankfully I found DU and discovered that there's hope for the USA.( and it's a great holiday from the freepers on another site I frequent). :pals:

If so, we could use your vote!

8. Simply love DU and the part of democrazy that's still alive...
in the USA. As much as I hate Bush, I don't feel like looking from a democratic country that's doing well (Germany) to another country that's not doing well. I guess we're facing the same problems somehow. I don't even believe the german, french or russian government is about "peace" or human rights or democrazy for a minute. They just have different interests, mostly economic interests. There's no government in Europe or anywhere else I support. But I feel solidarity with all the people in the streets or elsewhere, in Europe, Latin America or the USA, fighting for social justice, democrazy and freedom, against the idiots and terrorists, who have hijacked our world.
And apart from this, I really admire DU for the miracle it is: to let so many different people with different perspectives and even from different countries respect one another. I know pretty well that there is a lot of frustration, dissapointment and anger too, when so many different people meet, but it still works. And the moderators do a pretty good job.
Hello from Germany and thank God that there is somehting like DU in this world,
Dirk

9. What drew me to DU was...
...since I was a little girl I was facinated in the USA. All through my life I so wanted to live there, and become part of her population. (Yes I am more than willing to become an American citizen and take part in her elections.)

Almost four years ago I met Sapphocrat (while I was visiting the U.S.), we fell in love, and so I thought it was time I got to understand your political system, after all, it is your lawmakers keeping Sapphocrat and me apart (immigration laws.)

Sappho knew I had an interest in your politics so she told me about DU. So I began lurking, and then finally joined.

And now, I love DU because I can get intelligent conversations, and hang with like minded people. The only thing I have found which annoys me about DU is the homoprejudice that does happen. I did want to leave DU, because I had gotten to the point of being sick and tired of having to defend my rights as a person, but decided to stick it out in the hopes of teaching a few more people the simple lesson of acceptance, tolerance, and equality.

12. Thank you Leftist, et. al.
I feel like this administration is drowning us. We get our heads above water, start screaming and then whoosh! back under again. It helps to be able to read news from other countries, especially Canada, the country where my parents, my husband's parents and countless other American's parents came from.

I will miss your irreverent Prime Minister, please work to see he's not replaced by a Bushie butt-licker.

The good news down south here, is that I truly believe we have the numbers to burn bush in the next election. The bad news is that everyone seems afraid to speak up, vis a vis the naked emperor.

When I make anti-Bush administration comments people gasp (I have actually heard people say "I can't believe you said that out loud!), but I can tell that most agree with me.
The freepers just give me dirty looks that lead me to believe that they'd turn me in if they knew who to call....

Thank goodness for Canada! I would be a LOT more downcast if I didn't have the CBC (or DeGrassi Jr. High)

17. Um, we'll try LeftistGorilla, but please keep in mind
That we didn't vote for the current asshole
in the white house. And the GOP has had four
more years to perfect voting fraud, which they
were already quite good at in 2000.

13. I Like To Hang Around Smart People!
Like I said, much nicer to be with knowlegable smart people who share the same values. Every thing I like here is opposite of Freeperland. Plus I was in the states for over 10 years but left 2001. I still would like to return to SF but not until the weasels are flushed out of DC. It's good to know that not all people are sheep. baaaaaaaa!

14. It's really good...
...to be constantly reminded that not everyone who lives in the US is a right-wing Imperialist who wants a McDonalds in every high street across the globe and God in every living room. The US has a bad image in the rest of the world no matter how much your Glorious Leader may insist that we're all jealous of your "Freedom" (as if he'd just invented it) and secretly want to be Americans. In fact most of the few Americans I know are embarrassed to BE Americans these days.
When I was growing up in the early '60s, America represented everything that post-war Britain didn't have. I'm interested (and concerned) to know why it now represents everything that I'm glad we don't have (though we're getting there, slowly).
And, it may sound soppy, but here on DU I feel I'm 'talking' to folks who are individuals first and Americans second, if that makes sense.
That's why I like it here, anyway!

16. ...happens to the world.....
I'm an American/Dutch dual citizen, horrified after the selection, and out of desparation I went searching on the Internet to see if there were any people trying to stand up to the Republican coup!

Via Bartcop etc. I found Auntie Pinko's articles on DU....and was pretty much immediately intrigued with the conversations here.
Love the smartness, rowdiness, caring, fascinating people, and the craziness of this place.

And once I 'met' the Administrators of this site, I KNEW it was something very special!
