Rented "The Da Vinci Code" last night - what a stinker! |
|
I read the book years ago, it was fine, breezy, an entertaining day. Not great literature, nor really even good literature, but it presented an idea that captivated millions of people.
The movie adaptation was just boring and flat and not really entertaining at all. And was it just me, or did Tom Hanks (someone I like) sound nasally the whole time? Or was it just in comparison to Gandalf's sonorous, lovely voice when the two had scenes together?
On a frivolous note, I really liked Audrey Tatou's skirt and shoes in the movie. Skirt had an extremely flattering cut, and the shoes were lovely. Anyone have any clue who the designer was? That's the most lasting part of the movie for me - the single outfit "Sophie" wore.
Any other opinions?

1. i was disappointed, too-- |
|
the book did not lend itself to a 2 hour visual, way too much back story has to be included:shrug:
don't even remember her outfit

3. yeah, it wasn't anything spectacular - a navy blue suit, |
|
I think, with a very pretty light blue silk blouse. But the cut of the jacket and skirt was lovely. I'm a clotheshound, I tend to notice good design, ESPECIALLY if there's nothing else very captivating about the movie... ;-)

11. Have you seen some of her other movies? |
|
"Amelie" and "Dirty, Pretty Things" are must-sees if you haven't watched them yet.

4. Terrible compared to the book, or just terrible? |
|
I mean, I thought the book "HANNIBAL" was a true work of literature (subject aside), but the butcher's job done on the film version made me wish I'd held off and not read the book first.
Haven't read "Da Vinci." Just not enough hours in the life.

7. Hard to say since I read the book before I saw the movie, |
|
but I'd think an 'uninitiated' movie goer would also be disappointed and not have a clue what the hype was all about. The fun part of the book, for me, was some of the art history, the history in general, the locations, the description of the Temple Church, etc. All totally lost in the movie. Now, the movie itself was skillfully executed - couldn't really not be, with all the money poured into its production - but just a bore. Boring boring boring.
Loved Hannibal. Did you ever see Manhunter from 1986, directed by Michael Mann? Had Brian Cox as Hannibal - he was fantastic. And William Petersen (of current CSI fame) as Will Graham - he was also very good in it, I thought.

If Hopkins hadn't done it, Cox would have been marvelous.
Did you read "Hannibal?" I personally think Thomas Harris is a Pulitzer class wordsmith, and the book made tons more sense than the movie: important characters and action was omitted.

10. yeah - that's what I meant. Read and loved Hannibal... |
|
didn't like the movie at all -- they chose the coward's way out. I think Manhunter is the best adaptation of a Harris book, along with Silence of the Lambs

I fell asleep during it when I saw it last night. Dullsville.

5. Yes, that movie was terrible... |
|
and I, too, enjoyed the book in a trashy kind of way. I read it in a day.
Tatou's wardrobe was indeed extremely well-made and classy. I loved her outfit! I noticed her skirt several times over the course of the film.
Hanks was horrible, just horrible. He sleepwalked through the role and never raised his voice above a monotone.

8. yes! The skirt was just cut so well -- looked good standing, |
|
sitting, running, etc. A very good length - covered the knee but stopped right at the bottom of the knee to flatter the leg. I seriously covet that outfit. I travel sometimes for work and wish I could find the PERFECT suit that would flatter and be comfortable (I hate pencil skirts) and feminine w/o being revealing.
Did you notice her shoes? At one point you see a close-up and the heel was extremely well formed - thin heels, but not so pointy as to be stiletto/impossible to walk in. Also had a decent toe shape, not the pointy-toed wicked witch shoe of death that was so popular a few years ago. Hated those shoes.

6. we did too and found it pedestrian, some parts better than others... |
|
and i kept waiting for Howard to cast his daughter as Mary Magdalene but it ended as 'up in the air' as the book  seen the little blurb on the up coming Angels & Demons, but i think it's nearly time for Dan Brown to release us from his novelistic template

The book, I enjoyed. I figured the movie would be at least decent with Tom Hanks. Is it out on dvd yet?

19. Sonia prefers to watch the squirrels out the window. |
|
We moved a couple of months ago to a larger place, and she now has her "own" window. Lots of squirrels and birds! The two boys tend to torture each other and leave her out of the rough housing!
