Here's my new kitten! He doesn't have a name yet.
We just got him yesterday. Some friends of ours rescued a pregnant feral cat over the winter, and we took in one of her kittens. Any ideas for a name are much appreciated. You can't see it in this picture, but he has a very tiny sliver of white on his chest; just a couple of hairs, really. Otherwise he's all black, with dark blue eyes. You can make out some black tabby stripes if you look closely. He's 7 weeks old.

Congrats on your new fur-baby.

I'm guessing that is a Memphis State Tigers icon? I could be totally off, but you could name him Beale.

39. Don't know where I read this but the answer
I've understood goes back in time to when cats were burned at the stake with the "witches". Black cats were considered especially evil, and were hunted with great vigor. But, if a black cat had white markings, it was spared more often.

His name will come to you. There was a thread in Pets about names. Maybe this will give you some inspiration.

His eyes probably won't stay blue. That's kitten blue--enjoy it while it lasts. :)

12. I don't know if you want suggestions based on his appearance.
It would be pretty easy to come up with names for a black cat. Names based on his personality would be a bit harder, based on only a post and a picture. :)

He's beautiful! Congratulations!

13. I'll tell you EXACTLY what his personality will be like
That's because all black cats are exactly alike. I've had a BUNCH of black cats. Trust me. They're all alike.

He is going to be rotten and evil and demand constant attention. If you're REALLY lucky, he'll turn out to be a self-petting cat.

The self-petting cat will get on the bed while you're asleep, find your hand, shove it over the edge of the bed and walk back and forth under it to pet him/herself. It's not so cute when it happens while you're having sex, which is when it USUALLY happened.

And they can't meow. Any of them. The best you can get out of a black cat is this "mow, mow, mow" pitiful little cry. Of course, the black cat will be sitting in your lap while he/she is doing it.

Proper names for black cats reflect the pure rottenness which they display. Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Mephistopheles...you know, common ordinary names like that. (We had a black cat named Jesus once. We caught this pregnant stray and brought it in. We already had two black cats. The stray gave birth to an orange cat, then a black cat, then this little Manx-pattern tabby, and finally another black cat. When the second black one was born, my wife looked at her and said, "oh Jesus, not another black one." Jesus lived for about five years until she died of whatever genetic defect her other kittens carried.)

22. LOL. That's what my black cat is like!
Very needy, always demands to be petted. Has a little squeak instead of a meow. A real braniac, gets into everything. But those are EXACTLY the traits I like in her. :)

25. Beg to differ
Our black cat WILL NOT shut up. She will wander the house making blood-curdling wails, for no obvious reason, by the hour it seems. Yelling at her to shut up only produces louder yowls. She even has cries that sound like our names, used when she's looking for someone. She's crying right now, as a matter of fact. She snores too. Must have some Siamese in her, for her to sound like that. We love her to bits anyway, she always greets us when we get home, and loves to cuddle. She's also black with a little white chest spot, and you can see the black smoke tabby pattern when the sun is on her. She has a nice harmless name -- Cleo.

I've noticed that black cats tend to be dumb and/or extremely eccentric. Cleo is both, with paranoia thrown in.

27. "I've noticed that black cats tend to be dumb"
ye gods, that's my cat. Big, black behemoth named Brutus (pic posted downthread), and he's just dumber than a box of hammers. But he's also the absolute sweetest creature I've ever encountered (out of any species anywhere), and wants nothing more than to love you to death.

My other cat adores him (they're buddies), but I occasionally see him look at Brutus as if to say "you are an embarrassment to cats everywhere, you dimwitted jackass."

56. Feel fortunate
The only cat we ever had who figured out how to turn a doorknob was a black one.

Fucking cat could open an outswing door. Inswing (door pushes away from you)? That's no problem. Any cat can open an inswing door; especially if the bolt on the lock is misaligned. Just push against it with your feet. This cat was different. She figured out that you needed to turn the knobwith one paw and pull back on the door with another one.

I kept getting blamed for leaving the bedroom door open when my wife would come in and find the cat on her pillow. What changed THAT shit was the day the cat opened the door while we were in bed.

Just look at his eyes! Nothing, nothing, is more mischievous than a kitten. Nothing more endearing or more entertaining either, in my opinion. Puppies are a close second.

A bunch of years ago we had 5! kittens at once for a few months. Talk about a freakin' circus!

Can't think of a name for the little guy but I'm sure he'll inspire you with one before long. :)

or a Baxter to me. He really is cute.

We had a black cat named Shadow. Not a real original name but my son was 6 when he named him. Shadow lived to be almost 20. He lived with us happily for 2 years then moved next door when we got a dog. He'd always come and visit us, sneaking in when he thought the dog wouldn't notice. He was a great cat.

33. Our black hairball is named Chaucer.
He was named that when he came to us and we never changed it. IF I was to name him on my own it would be either Lothario (seducer of virgins) or maybe Kramer because he bursts into a room like Kramer did on Seinfeld.

I take exception to the notion that all black cats are stupid. I have to tell you, that Chaucer is WAY more interactive with people than ANY cat I've ever had--including Tillie(you bitch!) who used to answer the phone for me. This guy runs to the door to meet us when we get home and he actually tries to enter into conversation with us by injecting a meow or two. Darndest thing I have EVER seen, and I have lived with cats for over 45 years...

I will admit he's spoiled, a lap spud, and lazy but he's also one of the sweetest animals I have EVER known.

As far as a name, I thought of Pixel immediately when I saw that picture--don't ask me why. Maybe he's a little black spot so far, but I'm betting he'll be a fairly big boy by the time he's a couple of years old.

Enjoy your new kitty!!!

Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 09:48 PM by kwolf68
Just kinda come to me for my pets.

I got two cats and the girl I had gotten them from called them Charlotte and something else...

within the first few months I had the male named DOODLEY and the female named THE BIT (or LIL BIT, I also call her Tink, Frisky Shitz)...it worked out great and they both know their names.

Let the name come to you...Just watch the kitten at play and eventually you will have a kitten epiphany.
