Where do you live? Do you like it?
We're in Savannah Missouri, a quiet little town that's trying hard to become a suburb. it used to be a deep blue Democratic town, now there is money and mcmansions where cows used to graze, all in all though we like it here.
We can leave our house unlocked, when I still drove I left the key in the ignition, though to be honest I don't think anyone would have stolen my beater. We're close enough to Kansas City to take advantage of the urban culture, without the headache.

1. Quasi-rural Buckinghamshire - Love it.
My heritage is almost entirely Yorkshire, but I think that I'd find it difficult to live outside the Home Counties these days.

It's about the most conservative part of the country...but these folk are very very very far removed from being freepers. Beautiful countryside combined with good local facilities and easy access to London - I can't think of much which would make it better, for my personal preferences.

I didn't know you were English, it's much the same here rural, but close enough to an urban center, though not London.

23. They're basically the counties which border onto London
One could argue for hours about some cases...but as a basic principle they are the counties of the South East which offer both rurality and proximity to the capital.

111. Yes, yes, no.
Sussex doesn't border on London, one would have to travel through either Kent or Surrey to reach London.

And yes they're counties - again with a slight complication for Sussex, in that it is merely an historic county the administrative counties (i.e. local government) and the ceremonial counties (only really concerned with who gets to ponce around in funny costume and call themselves the Lord Lieutenant) are East Sussex and West Sussex.

Most of the English counties end in "shire" (Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Yorkshire &c.) - Essex and Sussex were the lands of the East and South Saxons respectively (also Wessex and Middlesex in the same vein). Kent was the land settled by the Jutes rather than the Angles or the Saxons.

PL is in bankruptcy and I think that all operations are currently stopped. Most of the headwaters forest is protected now, although PL still had some of it that could be logged, but I doubt they'd ever get it approved under their fed mandated habitat conservation plan. PL is going down, finally, I think.

Give a shout if ya'll come up this way and we'll meet for a beer!

I'm sorry your GGE hasn't gone well. I did something similar once. Moved 2,000 miles from everyone I knew, and it turned out to be a long, slow, slide into near-complete collapse. I hope you don't wait as long as I did to start looking for a different option.

On the other hand, it did help me grow as a person, so I suppose it had some value.

12. Pittsburgh and I love it here
Edited on Sun Apr-29-07 11:27 AM by dropkickpa
I live in the city in a tiny neighborhood that no one knows about. It takes me 35 minutes to get to downtown *on the bus*, 15 in a car. I love this town, and can't imagine living anywhere else. I was born in FLA and lived until I was 12 in TX, and PGH beats them hands down. I lived briefly in other places (I lived a rather nomadic existance for a while) but always came back here. Cost of living is very low but we rank higher for median income than the national average. The city itself is not very large, but we are 21st in metropolitan population in the country. We are an incredibly green city, many people are amazed at how many trees there are right in the city. We have a lot of beautiful architecture and an extremely rich history. We have world class universities, great arts, a fantastic library system, and we are growing. Pittsburgh hasn't been the smokey city since the 70's. We are ranked 3rd nationwide in both the number of buildings and square footage of certified green building space.

Then there's the Steelers!!

This website has some AMAZING photos, check it out!! http://www.pittsburghskyline.com/

*edited to add - and we are a democratic stronghold! we laugh when repubs try to run for mayor!

Actually, we're just outside of Olympia, in a quiet little rural area full of farms and mobile home parks.. nice and quiet.. very pastoral. and Olympia itself is one of the most progressive cities I've ever seen. Driving to my guitarist's house in West Oly, I see nothing but anti-Bush*, anti-war bumper stickers, house signs, etc.. it's awesome.

I can take it or leave it. I have some wonderful friends here, lots of great people, and there are plenty of festivals, etc (we have the second largest Fringe theatre festival in the world), but the city on its own is boring as hell to look at, and there isn't much around that would just be a day trip.

The city is basically comprised of houses and malls.

I don't like the winters. x(

Daylight from 4:30am - 11:30pm in the summer is neat, though. :)

68. Another Montgomery Resident.......
I grew up here, went away to College in Galesburg, IL, tried Boston and Houston, lived in Westchester for awhile (worked for, and was abused by, IBM) and came back.....Here's a "you know you're from MoCo" thingy:

1)-You've referred to the county as "MoCo".
2)-You can explain directions via the multiple highway systems connected throughout the county.
3)-You've ridden the Red Line on the Washington D.C. Metro more than any other.
4)-You know the history of the ICC, and you've probably heard that it's finally going through.
5)-Your high school is in the top 20 ranked schools in the country.
6)-You know the difference between old Rockville and new Rockville.
7)-You hang out/hung out during the afternoon/weekend at Fallsgrove, the Rio, the Kentlands, Quince Orchard square, Cabin John Mall, anywhere on Rockville Pike, etc. etc.
8)-You can easily name 15 high schools in the county and probably two of the three Montgomery College campus locations.
9)-You or a close friend have at one point or another studied (whether just over the summer or for a lengthened period of time) at "Harvard on the Pike" or "Yale on the Rail."
10)-You know David Richman. If you don't, you must have just missed him.
11)-You've been to a Green Tea Cafe, Pho restaurant, or Vegetarian Chinese joint.
12)-You've ridden the metro for hours exploring D.C., Georgetown, etc. just because there was nothing better to do.
13)-You have to decide which McDonalds to go to because there is literally one every two miles.
14)-A pothole somewhere or other has been inches away from destroying your car.
15)-You've had to slam on your brakes to avoid hitting a deer (maybe more than once).
16)-Four flakes of snow can close every school throughout the county.
17)-You give directions with street numbers instead of street names (355 - Rockville Pike, 28 - Darnestown Road, etc.)
18)-You've been on a date in Georgetown. Hey, it's the place that inspired "Afternoon Delight."
19)-You've seen the "exorcist stairs" while driving (or fallen asleep on them while piss faced drunk).
20)-You thought the Mormon Temple along 495 was Disney World when you were a kid.
21)-You instinctively refer to the highway as "270."
22)-There are places on the other side of the county that you've heard of but will probably never venture into.
23)-You know that "HoCo" is a joke, and that that nickname doesn't even sound good.
24)-Every childhood craze from Pogs to Beanie Babies to Tomagatchis were a big deal because every kid you knew was rich enough to afford them.
25)-You just grew up feeling..safe.
26)-You've had an entire schoolweek or more off because of snow MULTIPLE TIMES in your life.
27)-You know someone who has gotten off easy because of the Teen Court program. Either that, or you were a juror getting your community service hours.
28)-You probably went to a high school starting with an unlikely letter... like W or Q.
29)-Despite "MoCo" being huge, you feel like you know more than half of the people in this group.
30)-New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Connecticut are not states - they are roads.
31)-When you get into the habit of thinking that every intersection must have a camera connected to it.
32)-When you find yourself driving next to a pickup truck full of illegal immigrants, a 16 year old in a Mercedes, an asian in a souped up Honda Civic, and a mini van that was just pulled over for speeding.
33)-When you realize that even the most dilapidated part of the county is far better than College Park.

I have lived here for about 34 years and thats a pretty good list! I have a couple of quibbles--Don't you be callin Albert Einstein "ghetto"! I will have you know that my mother taught English there for many years!
-okay maybe you are right on that-how funny to have one of the lesser schools in the county named after a genius:rofl:
And if it makes you feel any better, not living too far from it currently Criminal Hoods IS a good name for Cinnamon Woods!
But pretty much you covered it!:D

I did laugh at the Sam Eig one since my VA friends would wonder about it when I used to live near it and gave them directions. Most common was "Sam Eeeg."
What's wrong with Frederick? I work there! I grew up in western Loudoun Co VA back when it was pretty rural (now almost Fairfax Co) and Frederick is much more developed now than Leesburg was then so I'm am redneck biased perhaps? Sho nuf!

104. Another one here
I like being near a large city that offers the diversity of food and culture, I also like being in Olney which still has a small town feel to it. The Olney days parade and fireworks are kind of a big deal and I see a lot of neighbors and parents of my kids.

My major complaint is that this is the most uptight major city in the world. Its too damn conservative and restrained. Its a company town and the company is the Federal government. There are no music venues in Montgomery county and even to see a movie that is out of the mainstream requires going to Bethesda at the closest. Georgetown is becoming nothing but chain stores. There are very few places to even buy music that is not a chain store with limited selection. I wonder what foreign diplomats think of the culture here?

35. LeRoy, NY -- about 20 miles southwest of Rochester, NY
It's a lovely town with a winding creek running through the downtown.

It has retained many of its charms, but the main street economy is in the tank, the manufacturing is all but gone (Jell-O was invented and made right here until the mid 70's). It has become a bedroom community --too far to be a suburb so thank goodness there is very little sprawl, but the downside is there is very little growth. The economy all over this area has been in a downturn for years.

Winters are fierce and last too long. Summers are nice, and it's beautiful here in the fall when the leaves change.

I'm politically active and we are lucky to hold a majority both in the town and village government, but the ratio between Dems and Rethugs is about even. Our county as a whole has way more Republicans.

We never lock our doors and my keys stay right where I can find them -- in the car.

I love it here. Sometimes I have to go to Washington on business - but I have my own private jet paid for by the US gov't - and I don't have to go there often.

Really small town (I'm a college student).

It's not my kind of place. I've always been a city-dweller, and since we're 3.5-4 hours away from the nearest cities (St. Louis or KC), it's kind of hard to get away. I only have one more year of undergrad, though, then we'll see about going back to a decent-sized city for graduate school.

54. It's nothing against the town per se,
Edited on Sun Apr-29-07 06:50 PM by deadparrot
it's just not my kind of place. I just prefer cities and the variety of activities they offer. The dominant weekend activity is to drink yourself into a stupor. While I do drink from time to time, it's not excessive, and I don't drink just for the sake of getting drunk. Frat parties and/or raves just aren't my thing.

Honestly, it's a really good place to go to school, because when you need to study, you can settle down and do so without any distractions. And the scenery is stunningly beautiful, especially in the spring and fall. But I think my three years at Truman have taught me that when it comes time to look for a job, proximity to a decent-sized city will be a major consideration.:hi:

And let's just say that living in a town that was listed as one of the best communities in the country for white supremacists is a little scary at times. :scared:

I live in a small town immediately adjacent to a larger city, which is where I work. This small town is very boring, and the only reason I agreed to live here is because we got a great house in a great neighborhood for a lot less than we could have gotten elsewhere. Also, the traffic within town is nonexistent. My commute to work, however, is terrible, and it almost makes me want to go back to working from home----almost.

It could be worse, but I really don't like living where I do. I don't hate it either. But if I had my choice, I'd live in a large city with lots of things to do, even with the traffic. :)

80. Just outside of Raleigh - Great weather, not too far from the beach or mountains...BUT
I am from Northern Va and this area is alittle too small town for my tastes.
I prefer old bungalows, and lots of history.

When I used to have the Kennedy Center, National Zoo, the Smithsonian, Fireworks at the Monument, etc...everything here is kind of boring. Oh, and the beach here is pretty, but it is not fun filled like Ocean City.

I will say I feel ALOT safer though and since I have a very arthritic knee, I would feel more vulnerable back home in NoVa.

be almost rural and a good mix. Then a bunch of McMansions went up and the SUV brigade moved in. There's a local controversy about whether or not the snobs who live in the newest tract should be able to gate themselves in because a few laptops have been stolen from the hummers they leave unlocked in the driveway. One guy was actually quoted in the local rag as saying they need the gates because of their "affluence." :puke:

I love it here. There's no winter, and the people are so profoundly insane that I look like the height of normalcy.

On edit: I lived in Missouri for four years, though right in the heart of it (Columbia), not the westside like you do. The people were really friendly, but, to quote my avatar, it never got weird enough for me.

109. The most isolated urban center on Earth

On the whole, yes, it really is all that. Fifteen different kinds of ethnic food, and I saw a guy bringing his longboard (only tourists say "surfboard") into my building yesterday. Minor quibbles: See that phat rainbow up there? On one side of it is, duh, rain. It may only rain for five or ten minutes at a time, but it always seems to be when I'm on my way to or from the bus stop. :grr: Speaking of TheBus, it is not "America's Best Transit System" so stop saying that. It can take 45 minutes or more to get to work, three miles away. Plus the buses are jammed full of people like human sardine cans. There are times that I miss the relative peace and quiet of the NYC subway. But, what are you gonna do? Go back to the mainland?

117. Newton County, AR
I'm 4.4 miles off the paved road. Only four households in my little valley. If one drops a camera, one gets a gorgeous photograph. I love it here!

Now, if I could only do something about the voracious ticks and chiggers, beside feed them my blood...

120. Urbana, Illinois. I like it here, but I'm often homesick for St. Louis.
I like it more in the summertime. That's when I can explore campus without all the students around.
