I've been asked to adopt a dog named "Pickles"...new names??? |
|
Very sweet and frisky 4 month-old mini daschund, male...WHY the former owner chose "Pickles" is beyond me, but my other dog loves him, and my cat is delighted to have a wrestling buddy his size, so the adoption is a go, it's a matter of a new name...

2. My mom had a mini-daschund named |
|
Hans von Schultz once. I thought that was a pretty clever name.
Does he have long hair or short?

Sorry ... (Edit: Apologies, demnan; I see you got there first.)
A little more seriously, maybe something cutely Teutonic like, say, Hansel, Wienerdog, Schnitzel, Heinz (oops, too close to "pickles").
My mom had a dog once and couldn't think of a name - ended up calling him diogi (dee-oh'-gee). We told everyone that it was Italian for dog.

8. Without sounding like an asshole |
|
Would you like your name changed? Pickles is the dog's name, by changing it you take away the dog's soul by turning a living creature in to a pure possesion.

12. he does, he told me right off... |
|
...added something about not calling him "late for dinner"...I replied that "late for dinner" was out of the question because it is a bit too polysyllabic and cumbersome, and that he has a very impressive vocabulary for a 4-month-old...

13. I had to change my one cat's name because |
|
when we got him at the shelter, he was named "Tom" which is also my husband's name. So to avoid confusion, we renamed him "Thomas" and he is fine with it. He answered to it right away.
Name the dog something that sounds similar? Rickles? Jeckel? Sparkles?

20. Does he respond to "Pickles"? |
|
If he does, I'd say follow the suggestion above and give him a similar sounding name, if you don't want to keep the one he has. No need to confuse the little guy.
I once adopted a 5-year-old stray. Went thru an entire dog-name book to see if he'd answer to any of them. The only name he perked up at was "Ringo," so he was Ringo from then on. Sometimes I wonder, though, if his previous owner called him Bingo (or Gringo?)

14. I would go for a human name |
|
I think if you call an animal by a human name they sense that you are showing them some respect. Worst thing is to name a pet some derogatory name like "Shithead." They sense these things. They're also pretty quick at understanding a new name. I am so pleased your other companions like the new guy. That's usually the toughest obstacle to overcome.

15. actually, I think pickles is cute for a dog.... |
|
and at least he's not likely to become a "stepford wife..."
However, given their cute big noses, maybe something like "Durante," "Jimmy D" or "Schnozzola." Do give some thought to his original name though.... not like they named him "fluffy" or something really revolting, right?
Enjoy the little guy. He sounds cute.
