A twist on New Year 's Resolutions - What do you vow to never do again???... |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 04:10 AM by Indi Guy
(I'll jump in shortly; I don't want to skew the nature of the conversation up front.)
What do you resolve never to do again???
on edit: Sorry for the lame syntax

I've got chronic insomnia and it's not that I "don't believe in" sleeping pills but that particular one makes me act crazy.

6. it mixes up sleep and awake |
|
This is hard to explain -- First of all, the worst (or maybe best) part is that it works as an amnesiac so that you don't really remember what you do. The second thing is that it can leave you in a state where you're not really awake but not really asleep -- awake enough to drive a car or make a telephone call or do something else dangerous but you're not in control, you're not rational, you won't remember doing it and there is the potential for some really fucking dangerous consequences (like driving -- which I don't believe I've ever done but cannot be 100% certain). Fortunately, from what my family tells me, my behavior has just been more of the embarrassing kind (i.e., you lose your inhibition)and not the dangerous kind.
I was on it nightly for well over a year before I finally got scared enough to stop taking it. Insomnia sucks and it's easy to get drawn into using it because -- well, insomnia sucks.

Thanks for your honest response (Obviously, I'm an insomniac myself).
These drugs come on the market because they promise relief. Hearing your story justifies my reluctance to take a drug which the drug industry promotes so heavily in the media.
For me, the first warning signs are the commercials. If Madison Avenue likes something -- I'm inclined to be very suspicious.
I used to be worried about my insomnia; but I decided not to lose sleep over it.

I take 1 or 2 dyphenhydromines nearly every night. I don't care if my liver rots, I've laid awake until 5:00 my entire life, it screwed up my years in school. I'm never going back to that now.
I have some Ambians that I save for emergencies, I broke them all in half. I hardly ever take them.

if you find a good one that works run a post on it OK? I liked the orginial Ambien but that time-release generic is absolute crap.

I am soon to be among the insured again and I intend to discuss it with my doctor. I've been using Benadryl and Tylenol PM which leaves me feeling sort of hung over the next day but at least I know I've actually been sleeping and not sleep walking and talking and acting like a general loon.

because of my weird schedule and my inability to shut my mind off long enough to sleep I find I pretty much have to resort to taking SOMETHING daily - but I don't like the idea of being on anything long-term so I switch around, using melatonin, unisom, etc. Every so often I hit up my doc for something - I did like the orginal Ambien but the generic stuff gave me bad headaches.

|
I'm getting the impression that you and I have similar sleep issues. I have an apt scheduled in a few weeks for a physical and I'm going to ask my doc for Lunesta or something like that but after my scares with Ambien I'm really a bit afraid of that kind of medicine. I have the problem as you mentioned, shutting down the brain enough to get to sleep but also I have a problem staying asleep for more than a couple hours at a time. Makes no sense to me, sometimes I'll be on my second day with no sleep and frustrated to tears at my inability to fall asleep and then there will be rare days when I can only assume my body is playing catch up where I literally will sleep, without the use of any sleep aid, for 12 hours. It's weird and very frustrating.

it doesn't work by itself but I can take a melatonin say with a half a unisome - that kind of thing. Yup, you and I are the same - without pills and even sometimes with, I rarely sleep for more than three hours at a time.

I just want to comment about melatonin, since I use it often. I know it works for some people and not others, and I'm lucky that it works for me and has for many years. If you try it, I suggest you try the Source Naturals sublingual (cheap at vitacost.com) -- it's the only one that actually ever worked for me and I've been using them for at least a decade now. 3-5mgs should do the trick, if it's going to work for you. Good luck!

46. Ask your doc about xanax |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 11:13 AM by ftbc
It gives me a good nights sleep and I feel good the next day... and it's cheap. I know people who take it all the time for anxiety can get addicted, but I don't know about the risk for using it as a sleep aid. I just use it occasionally.
BTW... my doc was going to put me on Ambien until I told him I sleepwalked as a child. I think doctors are under a lot of pressure to put everyone on the latest most expensive designer drugs.

Somehow (for some of us) marriage obligates us to say what needs to be heard, instead of speaking the truth that needs to be spoken.
