30. Cheese won't help, but bacon will...
I generally don't like lima beans, but I have a recipe that is basically a baked beans recipe using dried lima beans. It has bacon, bacon grease, an some brown sugar in it. Not huge amounts of the latter, but just enough to make the lima beans yummy.

5. Well, for starters, Jean doesn't get to bring the dressing this year.
She volunteered to bring it last year and it was GROSS.
It was like crumbled cornbread.
Dry and tasteless.

She's bringing cranberry sauce (canned) and rolls (from the bakery) this year.
We're taking no chances.
:-)

9. When I used to feed hordes of college students, friends and family this was it:
Edited on Wed Nov-23-11 07:32 PM by freshwest
Two small turkeys (stuffed) roasted in an Oster oven;

Gravy made from boiled giblets, pan drippings and cornstarch, so that it was a very smooth, almost translucent, reddish browns sauce;

Tons of wholegrain cornbread (not sweet), using butter, eggs, baking soda and buttermilk which were mixed with oysters, eggs, celery, onion, lots of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme;

Homemade wholeberry cranberry sauce;

Pumpkin pies from scratch and my own seasonings, less sugar than and evaporated milk than the standard recipes;

Baked sweet potatoes sliced open with lots of butter;

Mashed potatoes from scratch with milk, butter and parsley;

Green peas lightly cooked, brussel sprouts in butter, whole kernel orn, green beans, carrots and salads.

I made several versions of dressing according to what people wanted to have. I put no salt or pepper in the food and separated all the fat from the gravy. Everyone added what they wanted.

The youngest person usually said grace, however they wanted, something like 'We're grateful to be here to enjoy each other's company and this meal.'

The cornbread dressing and the gravy is what drove them to gluttony... And then they all got woozy.

37. I've made it before
You basically just make grits the usual way (I use yellow corn polenta from Bob's Red Mill) and put them in a loaf pan and chill overnight. Take the grits out of the loaf pan and cut into bit sized cubes. Put the cubes onto a greased cookie sheet and bake in a 450 degree oven till the cubes get browned, turning halfway through. After that it's just making dressing in the usual way.

40. we didn't get around to making it
but the recipe is different than the one posted above.

we got it from either food and wine or bon appetite. from what i remember, you make the grits, add eggs, cheddar, cream and bacon and bake it in a casserole dish for an hour.

12. why can't I say no?
EVERY freaking year lately I start stressing and bitching that I'm not going to do it this year and EVERY freaking year I find myself doing it AGAIN.

roast turkey
Mom's Anchorage Alaska Sausage Stuffing/dressing
yams/sweets with gross marshmallows
mashed potatoes/gravy
peas w/pearl onions
Waldorf salad made with whipped cream
fresh cranberry sauce
pickles/olives
pumpkin pie with whipped cream

all from scratch except the yams - the person who "needs" this dish prefers canned

two days of work for 5 minutes of scarfing

oh and for me especially I have a nice stash of wines my friend from Germany left including the Rieslings she brough over. I may start early.:P

the males in the house have cheap beer

17. Vegetable stew
I made today with all fresh veggies. It was yummy today, and it'll be even better tomorrow.

Homemade vegetable stew is Mr. froggy's favorite food, and mine too, next to mashed potatoes. I love potatoes fixed any way, but mashed tops the list.

18. Just because it's YOU, I don't do all the stuff my mother did
15 yrs before she died I realized I would be missing something so I sat her down and stenographed her recipes:

Like, What do you do FIRST, and what do you do NEXT, etc.

So, I'm very lucky to have all my mother/grandmother/childhood recipes/TASTES in my life.

And I cook every holiday,if only for myself and one or two loved ones. (DELICIOUS)

23. We're doing bbq turkey for the first time!
Did the test run a couple of weeks ago and it turned out great.

Spinach and arugula salad with balsamic vinaigrette
Turkey smoked with apple chips
Bourbon gravy - (also making some vegan gravy for my family members which is half the table! Only the turkey and gravy has meat.)
Cranberry orange relish (from Trader Joe's!)
Haricot vert style green beans with carmelized shallots and candied walnuts
Savory sourdough dressing
Potato and celery root mash with roasted garlic
Pumpkin pie (from Costco)
Tomato soup bundt cake (vegan - this tastes like a spice cake but is made with condensed tomato soup!)

25. just two of us for dinner...
...everyone else is hither and yon with "outlaws" or others. But I made pies all afternoon for the other gatherings.

Dinner:

Pomegranate juice and club soda spritzer
Bleu cheese stuffed celery, and salted cashews

Roasted turkey breast brined with lemon, thyme and rosemary
Dressing with the same herbs plus sage, onion and celery
Zucchini casserole with parmesan
Creamed pearl onions with nutmeg
Dilled roasted brussels sprouts
Homemade spiced crabapples, and assorted olives
Cranberry-apple-celery-toasted walnut salad

Pumpkin pie w/whipped cream
Spitzenberg apple pie

Can't wait for the late night turkey san on sourdough with lots of mayo. That's the best part!

26. Stuffed acorn squash, mashed blue potatoes, cheddar cauliflower, green beans, mushroom gravy,...
... challah, seeded rye, and pumpernickel breads, coltswort, brie, cheddar, swiss, red-wine cheddar cheeses, mint jelly, pumpkin and strawberry-rhubarb pies, merlot and, well shit, I'm certain there's something else.

We use Thursday for prep time and do the dinner on Friday. That works out well this year since my eldest is going to be at her boyfriend's house today and they'll both be back tomorrow for our dinner. My middle daughter is already at her boyfriend's house and won't be back until Sunday. Waaaaaaaa!!!! They're growing up!!!!!

39. I usually do turkey for x-mas
I don't take the day before or after Thanksgiving off (nobody around, get more work done), and I'm the only one cooking, so I try to keep it a bit simpler on Thanksgiving.

I think I'll do a heritage or pasture turkey this year for x-mas.
