Activist Corps Action: (15 weeks until election): Help Prevent Republican Election Fraud
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 03:46 PM by EarlG
For more information about the Activist Corps, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6482045">click here. Thanks to sfexpat2000 for suggesting this week's action.

DU ACTIVIST CORPS ACTION: HELP PREVENT REPUBLICAN ELECTION FRAUD

For years now, Republicans have been quietly using "voter fraud" laws to perpetrate election fraud. According to a http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=the_republican_war_on_voting">recent story in the American Prospect, "Using the Department of Justice, friendly governors, and its usual propaganda outlets, the GOP has propagated the myth of voter fraud to purge the rolls of non-Republicans."

Democrats all over the country need to check their registrations and make sure they are still eligible to vote in the November elections. This week's action is to write an email or letter to Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and encourage him to make all Democrats aware that they may be prevented from voting in November, and to take action now to prevent any problems on election day.

TALKING POINTS
  • Republicans have set up vote caging operations all over the country.

  • Republicans plan to exploit the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) by using electronic databases to scrub registered Democrats from voter rolls.

  • We need to counter by advising all Democrats to check their voter registration between now and October.

  • In addition, Democrats should be reminded to vote in person, and in a group if possible.

  • It is especially critical that Democrats in SWING STATES check that they are eligible to vote.

2. If we do nothing else this year, we have to do this.
We have to.

New Democratic registrations have been off of the charts and they will try to steal this year by killing them.

Don't let that happen.

Thank you so much, EarlG. This is perfect!

9. This is EXACTLY what we needed the DNC to do after 2000s theft. Salute to Chairman Dean.
Election fraud is the ONLY way the RNC came out ahead in 2000, 2002, and 2004. It sure as hell wasn't their candidates or their campaigns.

70. in chicago new registrations have been so off the charts that they want 2 new
judges in each polling place. not sure where they are going to find them, but i am told that is what they would like to do.
people need to go out there and be judges. especially in swing states, where thugs have been in charge, and have their tools in the polling places. it is a tough job, be we really need aware, educated citizens in those polling places.

maybe that could be an action one of these weeks- see how many du'ers we can get to sign up as judges.

17. Done - excellent idea!!
My letter:

I am writing to ask my party to begin immediately to address election fraud in order to prevent the election day problems we dealt with in 2000 and 2004. I get emails almost daily from the DCCC or the DSCC or Al Gore or numerous other prominent Democrats and elected Democratic officials. Please send emails out reminding Democrats to check their registration and polling location. I also think the party should set up a means of reporting problems and suspected election fraud schemes.

I live in Kansas and the GOP here has already admitted caging voters - in largely minority and low income areas. In 2004 a GOP operative in my county contacted elderly Democrats to offer them a ride to the polls on Wed, the day AFTER the election. My own mother received one of these calls.

Please this must be addressed!

* Republicans have set up vote caging operations all over the country.

* Republicans plan to exploit the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) by using electronic databases to scrub registered Democrats from voter rolls.

* We need to counter by advising all Democrats to check their voter registration between now and October.

* In addition, Democrats should be reminded to vote in person, and in a group if possible.

* It is especially critical that Democrats in SWING STATES check that they are eligible to vote.

I would gladly volunteer to aid in any efforts here in my state to counter these election fraud schemes. But we need to start NOW.

Sincerely,

28. NOTE: GOP also targeting foreclosure lists for challenges
Foreclosed-on voters using old addresses could snag election
Sunday, July 6, 2008 3:36 AM
BY ROBERT VITALE
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Punch cards in Florida left the 2000 presidential election in limbo. Ohio's voting-machine shortage became a source of continuing controversy in 2004.

If there's Election Day disorder brewing for 2008, it might well be rooted in the nation's mortgage-foreclosure crisis. In Columbus, across Ohio and in other key presidential battlegrounds, more people losing their homes means more registered to vote from addresses where they no longer live.

Although federal law ensures that most still will be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4, Ohio voters with outdated addresses risk pre-election challenges and trips from polling place to polling place. They're also more likely to cast provisional ballots that might not be counted.

"It's a real issue," said Daniel Tokaji, an Ohio State University law professor who wonders whether foreclosures might explain the increasing percentages of provisional votes cast between 2004 and Ohio's latest election, the presidential primary in March.

Nearly 3,700 people are registered to vote at Columbus addresses the city lists as vacant, according to records maintained by the city's code-enforcement office and the Franklin County Board of Elections.

-snip

Franklin County GOP Chairman Doug Preisse didn't rule out challenges before Nov. 4. He said his party wants "clean, accurate voter lists" and remains suspicious of outside groups such as ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, whose paid registration workers were accused in 2004 and 2006 of submitting names for people who don't exist.

Mortgage Meltdown
July 18, 2008
- snip -
RICK KARR: Even as the lawsuit moves forward, the foreclosure problem's spreading deep into Cleveland's suburbs.

JIM ROKAKIS: There's a suburb, Garfield Heights, over 1,400 vacant homes, Maple Heights, a similar number. Cleveland Heights, over 1,000, Euclid, over 1,000, Shaker Heights, once one of the most prestigious suburbs in America, 500. Some of these neighborhoods will not come back. They will not come back, at least as we know them. This county has lost over 90,000 people in the past seven years. No county in the country has lost more population, with the exception of New Orleans parish. And as I said to many people, they had the hurricane. And we had overzealous, unregulated lenders. And the impact was almost the same in some communities.
- snip -

I'm going to extend my activism by also writing directly to the local Dems of areas of the country that have been hit hard by the robber barons.

How convenient for the Ohio Republicans to get a twofer out of this one - money in their coffers and a high likelihood that the majority of the displaced voters who tend to vote Democratic "risk pre-election challenges and trips from polling place to polling place. They're also more likely to cast provisional ballots that might not be counted."

- snip -
RICK KARR: Cleveland officials decided that if the federal government wouldn't do anything, maybe the city could. The City Council took up an ordinance that banned predatory loans. But at the State Capitol in Columbus, where Republicans controlled both houses of the legislature and the Governor's Mansion, lobbyists for the mortgage industry pushed for a law prohibiting Cleveland and other cities in Ohio from regulating lenders.

29. I added some ideas that others may want to use.
Dear Sirs,
I am writing to ask that you immediately begin to address Republican election fraud in order to prevent the problems we've seen in the past.

They need to be provided with explicit instructions on how to do so. They also need to be provided with instructions on exactly who to contact should they encounter a problem on or before election day.

* In addition, Democrats should be reminded to vote in person, and in a group if possible.

* It is especially critical that Democrats in SWING STATES check that they are eligible to vote.

* We need to have state and local party officials on the lookout for caging and other vote denial operations and there must be mechanisms available for them to report such activities to authorities and to the national party.

* We need to have stories about this appear in as many local and national media as possible. The media may be more likely to run them if they are non-partisan - telling all voters how to double-check their registration without mention of party.

* Letters to the editor warning individuals about such activities should appear regularly in local newspapers throughout the country. These letters should tell people what to watch for (caging letters, for example) and give a contact number and URL for reporting of such activities. Such letters may not only help people fight such activities, they may also discourage the perpetrators who will know that they're being watched.

* Local, state, and federal candidate mailings could all include a short mention of a phone number and a URL labeled with something like "Your vote may be in danger, call now!" or "Double-check your registration" or something similar.

Having good candidates who are on the right side of the issues and who campaign effectively may not be sufficient if voters are thwarted on election day.

31. You're welcome.
Most people won't bother taking action unless it's made as easy as possible with explicit instructions on what to do.

Also, a highly visible national campaign may cause some perpetrators to think twice about involving themselves in such activities.

Here's what I wrote:

I am writing to urge the DNC to urge Democrats to make sure their voter registration information is correct and up-to-date. The last few elections have been rife with voting problems, from Republican caging lists to electronic voting machines purging eligible voters. I understand that now election boards are going after possible voters facing foreclosure. If all Democrats were reminded to be vigilant about checking their voting status, it will be much more difficult for massive purges and disenfranchisements to spoil another White House election. In particular, I hope the DNC will urge this action in swing states, and in communities of color.

41. I may be wrong but the critical venues are urban areas in swing states
mostly.

Our elections are stolen on the backs of urban black voters.

But, there are other areas of concern, too, like the college precincts and the military ones.

We can drill this down to those precincts in swing states, if we care enough to do that.

Not because they aren't interested but because they have (necessarily) a different to do list. There will likely be lawyers on call for Obama but they're his lawyers, not ours.

We have to do this. But I bet Howard will help us if we make it easy and timely for him.

Hello Mr. Dean!!

You are doing an awesome job with the 50 State Strategy but lets keep it going and remind people to check their voter registrations and the requirements in their respective states and also urge unregistered voters, including those who will
be 18 by November 8th, 2008, to register asap and get whatever ID's they need NOW!! And PLEASE Do NOT allow Republicans to exploit the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) by using electronic databases to scrub registered Democrats from voter rolls!!

Please Alert the Voters now!

Thank You for all your hard work!!

Sincerely;

Breeze54

a letter or email to your Secretary of State and your state Democratic chair. If your Secretary of State is a Democrat, even better. We are lucky here in California because we have an SoS on top of publican election fraud (rather than voter fraud). If your SoS is a publican, then a message to your Democratic state chair couldn't hurt.

76. I don't know if the people from the Prospect talked to Howard about this or not
I know their Washington people, but not the editorial decision-makers, who are
apparently in Boston. However, I do know Howard, and Republican electoral fraud
is constantly on his mind as one of our biggest obstacles. I spoke to him last
month, and he said so outright. Remind him all you want, but he knows. Looking
out for specific indications of Republican fraud and trying to bring them to light
before the election is our best tactic. Writing letters to Howard is preaching
to the most in-tune member of the choir we have.

we are behind him and supporting him in addressing it. There has been little about this in the news (or not enough for me at least and I think lawmakers and others are reluctant to address this as a top issue this election year. This way, he can say, 'I have received a lot of mail and calls about this - DEM voters are concerned, etc.' when asked why he is addressing this so much.

I am very grateful to be in the same choir as him.

82. NC is doing and OUTSTANDING job - check this website
http://www.democracy-nc.org/index.shtml

Check out the "What's New" column on the left.

NC has also created a "Voter's Bill of Rights" that we plan to shrink to 1/2 page size to give to voters to carry with them when they go to vote. Beside each statement in parentheses is the NC Gen Statute number.

Check out the 1/3 page handout for former felons explaining their right to vote.

On a side note, I would like to see DU become more involved in black box voting fraud (or if already involved, please point me in the right direction - I have been perusing the Election Reform forum)

88. Ltte Sent:
Email Sent to DNC:

Before his untimely death, Andy Stephenson who was a true patriot, worked tirelessly because he had discovered that our voting machines can be easily hacked and that voters were being disenfranchised. Howard and Bev demonstrated this on national TV and it made a lasting impression with millions who watched how easily it could be done.

In Florida we now know that over 90,000 innocent voters were not allowed to vote and were not counted. In Ohio after the 2004 election, three key officials were indicted and two faced prison time, including Blackwell, the then state secretary in charge of voting, because thousands of mostly poor and people of color who were likely to vote Democratic, were needlessly disenfranchised. In CA they have banned the voting machines altogether because they know these machines are terribly flawed. We now know through Congressional hearings that voter caging was illegally and actively engaged in by Republicans

In my state in WA, observers watched as in Snohomish and Thurston counties, where there is a large gap between rich and poor, and where there are more poor Democrats than rich Republicans, at the peak of the voting cycle on voting day, suddenly the mandated voting machines placed in low income areas for over 30 minutes, sent thousands of votes into the Ethernet never to be counted or even recognized ~ and our Democratic governor, barely won by 133 hand counted votes.

I could go on but the point I am making is that the people in charge of the way we vote are taking active steps to disenfranchise even more voters this fall by scrubbing innocent voters from the rolls. And these are mostly people who will vote as Democrats. Please advise all voters to check their registration to ensure they are on the rolls. As an activist and delegate for Barak Obama in my local caucus, I have done so myself and yes I am registered, and plan to not use the absentee ballot they will send me, but to show up at the polls to vote, as well as be an observer at other poling sites.

Sincerely, Cat Sullivan, proud Democrat, WA state voter, District 1

people that do it are frog-marched into prison.

That will only happen when Democratic leaders make a stink about election fraud.

Witness Kerry's dead silence about Ohio in 2004.

104. Hello, I would just like to know, WHY ARE THERE NO REFERENCES TO THE VOTING MACHINES HERE?
I recognize the vote caging problems and other things listed... but if we are going to contact Howard Dean about election problems, why would we avoid biggest problem which is that over 90% of the votes are counted on proprietary software, and the people at Diebold and the other voting machine companies could change the election results without anyone knowing?

Howard Dean himself was on TV talking about this 4 years ago, but he has done nothing about it.

The Brennan Report said our Democracy is at risk because of the voting machines and virtually every expert agrees there needs to be at the minimum a paper trail and audit of every election.

I applaud the effort but I'm a little confused. Even if we get everyone on the voter rolls that should be and into the voting booths as they should, there is no way to guarantee that their votes are counted properly unless we work on that end.

There'll be other actions. To my mind, it's a matter of breaking down the problem in to pieces that can be dealt with -- instead of overwhelming people with all of it at the same time.

Maybe we can formulate one that he can implement regarding the machiness. Something practical, although, I don't see Howard as being in as good a position to do that as election protection volunteers -- unless he'd be willing to help recruit some for critical venues. Regardless, I'd be happy to work with you to put together an action that is simple, effective and easily communicated regarding voting systems. :hi:

110. IMHO, Howard is the one to take this issue on, becauase
A) candidates are vulnerable as conspiracy nuts and sore losers. he has nothing to lose.

B) he knows there's a problem. Just watch this video (I'm sure you've seen it):

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FhMUtzOxjJY

For years now I've been scratching my head on how he can go on like this, knowing there's a problem and doing nothing about it. Even on his website it says there's a problem:

http://www.democrats.org/a/2006/07/dnc_voting_righ.php

"We also know that both the Diebold optical-scan and touch-screen (DRE) machines have been proven to be vulnerable to tampering in test after test by industry experts, including a team of computer scientists and security experts convened by California's Secretary of State in response to recent revelations concerning the hack ability of Diebold voting systems."

It's as if he's the manager of a baseball team going into the world series and he knows the umpires are biased and he doesn't do anything about it.

It's like he's :hide:

It's hard to explain voting machines to people without their eyes glazing over -- which is why autorank's ham sandwich metaphor to describe the portability of tabulator memory units was so great. It may be that Howard has to choose his fights based in part on how easy it is to communicate them.

Let's work up an action that is so sleek, elegant and fast that he HAS to respond to it. lol

I'm in, Gary.

Here's my letter:

I am concerned about the integrity of this year's Presidential Election. We all know how 2000 was stolen. I believe, due to corrupt state government in OH, that 2004 was also stolen. Republicans are actively setting up vote caging operations to avoid the impact of the massive movement of new voters in this country due to Obama's incredible campaign.

Republicans also plan to exploit the Help America Vote Act by using electronic databases to scrub registered Democrats from voter rolls.

Please use your great voice to accurately encourage Democratic voters to check their voter registrations between now and October. Democrats should be reminded to vote in person and go with a group if at all possible. This is especially critical for Democrats in swing states.

I'm very excited about the huge surge of new Democratic voters that we're registering this year. I hope that it'll lead to landslide victories in the fall. But I'm worried that many people will be unable to vote on Election Day, unless we take strong preventive actions starting now.

As reported by BBC investigative reporter Greg Palast, the shenanigans have already begun. Voter roll purges, voter caging, and voter suppression started to surface already in some primary states. In addition, the sheer number of new registrations will inevitably cause honest errors in some counties. We can't afford to take the chance that voters will be turned away from the polls on Election Day due to missing registrations.

Please follow up your voter registration drive with a crucial step to touch base for verification. Let all the registrants know that they need to double-check their registration status before Election Day!

138. Here is the note I sent
Dear Gov. Dean,

I commend you on your tremendous 50 state strategy, and also on your intestinal fortitude for presiding over the DNC during such a tumultuous primary season.

I write to you today to ask you what the Democrats are doing to prevent election theft by the GOP once again. Vice-President Gore and Senator Kerry were without a doubt robbed of the Oval office, but it wasn't just a loss for them. Looking back at the destructive presidency of G.W. Bush one can see not only the downward spiral of our nation but also the effects of his poor decisions on the world.

If Barack Obama is to give us the change that he is promising he will first have to be elected. This can only happen if voters are not disenfranchised and votes are not "lost" or flipped.

Please, Gov. Dean. For the sake of the country and the world, urge the DNC to make election fairness their top priority from now until November.

With great thanks,

GPV

142. Need help in bringing republicans to democratic side.
Can people write some messages to help bring republicans to Obama's side. They must be well reasoned, logical, and genuine undeniable truth, no hate words, and they must be less than under 200 characters. Im open to all suggestions and messages. Thank you.
