Obama: Maybe I Don't Know Wright "As Well As I Thought"

Obama Cuts Wright Loose
Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

In strongest terms to date, he rejects his former pastor’s views, says that he gave him the “benefit of the doubt” in his Philadelphia speech.

“The person that I saw yesterday was not the person that I had come to know over 20 years.”

Added that when he “states and then amplifies such ridiculous propositions,” including tying the U.S. governments to AIDS, statements on Farrakhan, equates war to terrorism.

“Then there are no excuses. They offend me. They rightly offend all Americans and they should be denounced. And that’s what im doing very clearly and unequivocally today.”

4. Yes, I think he did. He's talking about how Wright
also disrespected him and insulted his campaign. He's done with Wright, and I'm glad. Maybe now we can all concentrate on something important. Yes, wishful thinking, I know.

5. in view of the fact that wright's views were well-known within the black community,
I find this comment ludicrous. obama NEVER heard any of wright's more controversial remarks, nobody EVER told him about sermons he had not attended? yeah, right.

there was very interesting commentary on KO last night about obama and wright.

6. equates war to terrorism.
I would guess if you're on the receving end of an artillery shell, and you're a non-combatant in your house, that's just been blown up, it would equate to terror and not war.

12. Bullshit. He's probably running from the criminal m$m who won't
let it go. Do you have a problem if he defends himself, or should he just bend over for your satisfaction? :eyes:

Not to worry folks, Obama is just saying and doing what he has to to grow his base. After all in the words of Dr. Wright "he's just a politician". But us folks in the know, know that they go together like peas and carrots.

13. IOW, don't believe a word he says.
Well, hey. I don't. But right now, I would guess he grenuinely feels Wright just shafted him. And I don't think Obama is as forgiving as Clinton.

15. Obama says he's 'outraged' with pastor's comments

Obama says he's 'outraged' with pastor's comments

Obama sharply criticized his former pastor Tuesday.

(CNN) — In his harshest criticism yet of his former minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama said he was “outraged” by Wright’s comments at the National Press Club Monday, and “saddened by the spectacle.” “I have been a member of Trinity Church since 1992. I have known Rev. Wright for almost 20 years,” he said at a Winston-Salem, North Carolina press conference Tuesday. “The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago.”

Obama said he was outraged by Wright’s remarks that seemed to suggest the U.S. government might be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community, and his equation of some American wartime efforts with terrorism. And he seemed to signal a complete break with his former minister.

“What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing,” said Obama, who added that Wright had shown “little regard for me” and seemed more concerned with “taking center stage.”

“It was antithetical to our campaign, it was antithetical to what we’re about,” he said. “I cannot prevent him from making these remarks” but “when I say I find these comments appalling I mean it. It contradicts what I’m about and who I am… it is completely opposed to what I stand for and where I want to take this country.”

In a break with previous comments, Obama focused his criticism on Wright the man, and not simply his remarks. “I gave him the benefit of the doubt before my speech in Philadelphia” where he addressed the subject of race. But “what we saw yesterday from Rev. Wright was a resurfacing and I believe an exploitation of these old divisions.”...
