Clinton's Base Shifting Obama-wards

May 20, 2008 8:52 AM

As the Democrats start to coalesce around Barack Obama, those coming over to his side appear to be drawn from some of the key constituencies that supported Hillary Clinton during the campaign, according to Gallup data gathered between May 1-13. As of now, Clinton's support among whites, women and voters with high school degrees or less have dipped just below 50 percent, while her support among Hispanics stands at 51 percent. Among the first three groups, Obama is now statistically even with Clinton; among Hispanics he trails by 7 points. Gallup says that only major demographic group still supporting Clinton by more than the 51 percent she registers with Hispanics are women over 50.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking has documented a surge in Democratic voters' support for Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in recent days, swelling from a four percentage-point lead for Obama during the first part of May to a record 16-point lead for him in polling from May 16-18.

Prior to now, Obama's largest lead over Clinton was 11 percentage points, achieved briefly in mid-April. However, for most of the past month, Clinton and Obama have been fairly closely matched, with neither sustaining a significant lead for more than a few days. It thus remains to be seen whether this improvement in Obama's standing is a variation of the same pattern, or represents a turning point in the race.

Obama in the GE.

She's cementing her base in the Democratic Party, I may not like it, but I can't have much of a problem about that as long as they are honest about exactly what her IWR vote was.

P.S. It's interesting that she's using Obama to do this. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a bunch of her sworn handmaidens registered to Obama's website, pulling her folks together there all along.

4. Another reason why I think Richardson might be a good VP selection...

It would seem that the hispanics are the hardest demographic group to crack amongst her supporters. Perhaps Richardson on the ticket would make the difference there.
