will be given tons of air time on the cable news channels and can afford to otherwise buy any other air time they need?

5. One Hour Tonight and Tomorrow 10PM EST |
|
The three networks say there's no news and don't want to spend the money/lose the ad dollars to cover the convention.
This just allows the masses to ignore the process. After all the average? (ok many) American has to watch their daily quota of atrocious TV and would be furious if it was pre-empted for coverage of a political process that has an end result that affects their lives and that of their kids, etc.

They've got David Brooks spouting RNC talking points between speakers, but they've also got people who make more sense. They're covering 3 hours a night, which means they're covering all the main speakers.
That the networks failed to cover both Carter and Obama is unconscionable. They should have their licenses looked at because of this failure to inform the public by showing all the major platform speeches.
Shame on them all.

8. The PBS coverage has been pretty good |
|
David Brooks and Mark Shields are both pretty moderate, really, one soft right and the other soft left. The three historians offer an interesting perspective, and then they have the occasional floor interview. And we get to see the major speeches. For those of us without cable, it's a good alternative.

made the remark that it was a shame the other networks were not broadcasting because they missed a great speech, a reference to Obama.

11. Without "News" being made ... |
|
conventions are four day infomercials. In the future - political parties may have to pay to get them aired.
Now if there were some smoke filled rooms and some roughing up reporters and head cracking .... you'd have another story.

13. They're also the only places the candidates get to speak |
|
Listen to the "campaign coverage" on national and local news. It's all some overpaid bobblehead spouting off about the horserace or the travel plans, never about issues and never allowing the candidates to speak for themselves. What passes for campaign coverage is a disgrace.
The conventions are the only place we get to find out what the parties stand for. We need to have them televised on the networks. If they're nervous about time, they can tape the speeches and broadcast them back to back without color, commentary, choruses, or the rest of the BS.
People need to know what's going on, and this is the only place they're allowed to find out.

16. I think you're being a wee bit unfair... |
|
to David Brooks. First off, I have no problem with any network having a conservative pundit aboard during their coverage, as long as he/she is balanced by the presence of a more liberal one. (In this case, 'course, Mark Shields.) Brooks is an intelligent, reasonable, and well-mannered fellow, who does occasionally (e.g. gay marriage) break with his party. A TP spouting Repupl-o-ton he ain't.

7. I've been watching ABC News Now.. |
|
I've been watching the convention on ABC News Now, which is only on digital cable here. They seem to be airing all of the speeches uncut and they have Peter Jennings anchoring the primetime coverage (and there is no "talking over the speakers" as I've seen on the other cable networks). No commercial interruptions either... but it would be better if the major networks could cover it like that, and not just an obscure digital cable outlet.

9. CBS wants the convention held in a house full of |
|
cameras. NBC wants them to eat terrible things, perform stunts in bathing suits and see if "fear is a factor" ABC wants them to team up to tear apart a house and make it over with Disney paraphenalia. Then they will cover it!

It is far more important to watch people eat bugs then to know how giant corporations( like the networks) are bleeding regular people dry.
