MSNBC's Doc Block shrinking? Gregory's Race for the WH to re-air at 11
TV Newser: Thursday May 29, 2008
MSNBC To Re-Air Race at 11pmET

Wherefore art thou Doc Block?

Last night, MSNBC began re-airing the David Gregory's Race for the White House at 11pmET. Two months ago, the network replaced the 10pmET Doc Block hour with a re-air of Countdown, which means the documentary programming has once again disappeared from the MSNBC prime time schedule.

Insiders tell us, it may only be temporary if the numbers drop off.

Last night the Gregory show came in third; 10K demo viewers behind the O'Reilly re-air. Monday's Memorial Day doc block marathon did not fare so well. MSNBC came in a distant third in the demo, and fourth behind HLN in Total Viewers in prime time.

1. Do people actually watch the "Doc Block?"

MSNBC was supposed to be a news channel. The least they could do is air an hour of straight up world news. No content about the USA since it's covered well on all other shows. 6 hours in a row on the same subject is a little old.

But I would watch every night to see info on Canada, Mexico, Europe, etc. And not business news, that's covered. Just info about major events around the world, major political happenings and such.

Patrice O'Neal is a comedian, who I think can be pretty funny. In one of his routines, he said "Do you know why the world hates us? It's because we don't know anything about the rest of the world, AND we don't want to."

That would be infinitely more useful than the 700th repeat of the Doc Block.

5. I think MSNBC was in the ratings cellar for so long that they put anything on the air...
they thought might get a few viewers. I think for a while, the DocBlocks did. But with the success spearheaded by Olbermann, and heightened interest in politics, they seem to have found viewers with different programming.

Let's hope it continues!

3. Every time I switch to MSNBC at night looking
for a rerun of Keith, I find myself facing some scary looking prisoners. I'd rather watch old Jane Pauley "Time and Agains." At least those were somewhat interesting.
