Editorial Cartoonist Chip Bok leaves ends run in Akron Beacon Journal

Long-time editorial cartoonist Chip Bok had his last day in the Akron Beacon Journal. Either Friday or Today, depending on how you look at it. The Editor had a note in today's Beacon that his last day was Friday. His "last" cartoon apparently appeared today (Sunday).

For quite some time, Bok has been doing very RIGHT-WING cartoons ... once in a great while, he's done some milder shots at Republicans.

As the saying goes, "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything."

So ...




























Okay, so I won't fall into that trap. I don't have an exact date (or month, or year) as to when he turned, but for quite some time, at least in the early 90s, he was willing to skewer Bush Sr. quite often. But somewhere along the line, he must have smelled the odor of easy money, and it seemed to me that he threw aside any hint of his old "leftish" days.

Yes, he would occasionally do some poking at Bush43, or Alex Arshinkoff, or, in a relatively recent case, John McCain. But that was rare, and tame when compared to what he did to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Dennis Kucinich, John Kerry, etc. No rumor about a Dem was safe ... but few facts about Republicans were exposed.

I don't know who piddled in his cornflakes, but for some time, he was on the right side of things, and then he went into the Hard Right of things.

For one, I will not miss him. As much as his cartoons made me burst a blood vessel, I am not going to fall into his level of muck.

Oh, and on one other A.B.J. note ... Today's Sunday comics section had a sick surprise ... Prickly City re-appeared, despite being "voted off the island" months ago. I'm hoping that this is a one-time deal. I had not heard anything of its return. (A.B.J. was carrying Opus to its end).

"Prickly City" back? Please let it be a temporary filler.

Back to BOK, his stuff lately were not only right leaning but wrong headed IMO.

4. Every nasty thing that could be dug up on a Dem was played out in his space ...

even when he was "poking" at Bush (and, to a lesser extent, McCain), it was still done as a slap at Dems ... kinda like the first Repuke Pres debate was supposed to highlight them, and they spent it attacking Hillary ...

3. Never liked Bok.

But the ABJ has been drifting rightwards at least since Knight-Ridder sold it. (J. S. KNight spinning in his grave!) Wasn't today Giffels last day too?
