Attention Wal-Mart Shoppers!
Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 01:03 PM by Cobalt Violet
I had to go next door to Wal-Mart for cat litter (my car is in the shop). While I was there I went to the book section. It is not a large book section at all. But, they had plenty of room for right-wing wacko books. On the shelves were Hannity, Stosell, and Savage. They had others too I just don't remember every last one. NOT ONE LIBERAL BOOK, NOT ONE! And we're talking about Massachusetts, not Mississippi! I wanted to see Moore or Franken! But no. I only had conservatives to choose from. No thanks! I know I can order these books from Wal-Mart on-line but that is not good enough. I want to be able to walk in and buy one off the shelf without shipping charges. I do live near many good book stores so it's not a problem to get the books but I was just so ripped about Wal-Mart's book selection that I decided to walk a mile and get my cat litter elsewhere. At least they have some liberal books at the grocery store! Even though Wal-Mart is next door, I try to never spend a FDR dime there!

2. Don't hate me for this, but ...
... I did indeed buy Michael Moore's latest at a local Wal-Mart (in the Northwest), on the day of its release. I've also seen most of the other top anti-Bush books (from major publishing houses only, of course, since this is Wal-Mart) on the shelves there as well.

I went to their book section fully expecting to see only the pro-Bush books, and I'll admit that I was pleasantly surprised to find otherwise.

3. I wish I had that choice.
If they had any at my Wal-Mart mabey I would buy some. If nothing else Wal-Mart would then realize that there is a market for them. But I dont even have that choice.

We all do what we gotta do but, I will never spend one cent in Wal-Mart I don't care how cheap. I'd rather pay a few dollars more and take my business elsewhere.

Just a small measure of passive resistance. ;)

5. Sam's is just as bad
The sam's club (Sam Walton) is just as bad as Wal-mart in terms of selection. They have so many conservative books, and strangely more types of bibles than any other type of book category.

7. The same thing at Meijer. You can
only buy Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, et.al. I've noticed the same at our local Target...not sure if that is the case all over.

This situation is fodder for LTEs.

I have not stepped foot in a WalMart since 2000. Rarely go to Meijer only because they carry some items other stores in my area do not. And the Meijer family does do good things in our community...where they are based.

8. That could be more of a problem than it looks
There's a LOT of people that shop at Wal-Mart. I wouldn't say that books are their stock in trade, or that "Wal-Mart" springs to people's minds when they need a book. But...
There's a lot of people that only go to Wal-Mart in this country, and if they only will carry one side of the discussion, then these people will only be exposed to one side of the discussion. It's all part of the process of Freeperizing the US.

9. Liberals: shop at Wal-mart, donate the money you save to Kerry
& other Democrats. No sense paying the extra 30-50% when the competition is not a monNpop outfit.

17. Actually it makes a lot of sense to support any store
that isn't Walmart. They use their enormous size to muscle suppliers. That equals closing up U.S. plants and moving overseas, and/or using grossly underpaid workers. They also are moving into grocery and intentionally busting groceries that actually pay their employees a living wage. In many markets, they pay half the salary of a chain grocery store, and don't provide benefits. Guess who gets to pick up the tab anyway--us!!! In Georgia, a huge percentage of the state-provided child healthcare benefits are used by Walmart employees for their kids. Walmart isn't a free market fair player--they are bullies who want to crush their competitors.

11. where did they go?
I'm thinking they have to put the conservative books up because they're in the new york times best sellers list. As far as #5 ranked Lies and the lying liers who tell them... must be sold out. Especially in Massachusetts. I myself can't seem to find it but I'm in San Francisco... extremely hard to find here seeing how there are so many fans here.

14. For the very very low-down on Walmart (low as in wages). . .
go here: <http://www.brennancenter.org/presscenter/oped_2003_1029.html>

One can see that Walmart started in Arkansas--to take advantage of non-union labor--and spread like a virus.

15. The Conservative Books Outnumber ...
the Liberal books, but I have seen both in Wal-Mart and Sam's Club ... indeed my copy of "Lying Liars" came from Sam's Club.

However, lest I lose my lib cred, I just read "Nickle and Dimed" this weekend and am seriously re-thinking the amount of money I spend at Wal-Mart. I mean, I worked there for a year when I was in grad school--it had hours I could work while I took classes--but it never really occured to me that my prosperity was really built on the backs of those low paid employees.

16. The conservative books are on the Sam's rack because
they haven't sold elsewhere. They're on deeeep discount.

I was a troll at FR for more than 2 years before I finally made too many comments that exposed I wasn't one of them and got booted with "You've been trolling under the radar for too long." It was a good run. Anyway, every time a conservative book came out they complained that all the big book stores hid it. Their very adult response was to take the conservative books and put them in front of liberal books so people wouldn't see them. Reminds me of something a child -- a very young child -- would do.

Then when a liberal book sold well they screamed (Hillary and Franken in particular) that all the sales were to liberal organizations that were giving the book away. Even if that were true, which we know it isn't, they conveniently ignore the fact that conservative groups buy books by nutcases like Coulter and give them away.

Ah, it was so much fun exposing the hypocrisy.

23. I have a confession
I do something kind of childish too. I have been known to flip Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly at Borders, so their faces aren't showing.

I know, it's childish, but if I save one mind from that toxic waste, well . . . maybe it's worth it.

19. Sorry but I do shop at Wal-Mart!
I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart and then started again. I stopped because of a presentation made by the Commercial & Grocery Workers Union regarding how Wal-Mart treats their employees. I thought that this was showing some solidarity. I then talked to the rep from the grocery workers and he said that I should start shopping there again and wear union logo clothes. Now, whenever I shop at Wal-Mart I wear a union T-shirt, cap, etc. Or I wear something political -- I have several political and Democratic t-shirts. I also make it a habit to remark to employees about unionism. It works!

By the way, Mrs. Clinton was a member of the Board of Directors when Sam Walton was alive.

PSS - My cat will only eat the catfood that I buy at Wal-mart. Hey, maybe he's a Republicat!

20. So, wear your union clothes,
buy your bag of cat food, give em your spiel, and get the hell out. Is your cat THAT finicky? Sample other types of food for cryin out loud. Why do you have to buy anything to proseletyze to the employees? Talk to them in the back of the store, away from the check out desks and managers' eyes.

I don't mean to flame either, but this topic REALLY sets me off. Buying anything there defeats the purpose. All of us are here for a reason. To defeat Bush. Any money or effort you give to candidates or places like truthout or moveon.org, you cancel out by shopping there.

As far as I'm concerned, any liberals that still shop at Wal-Mart really need to re-examine what it is we're fighting for. You save, what, 20 cents per item, maybe?

Some guy across town just lost his job and will end up working there for pennies because it's the only place left in town? That's a real bargain.

21. Shop at Target instead
A few months ago a Target in my area was carrying Greg Palast's book The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, of all things. Recently at another local Target, I saw they'd been carrying Richard Clarke's book, but it was sold out.

22. Kudos to you
What an outrage. I have been completely avoiding them.

They have plenty of gun magazines there too. I went there once looking for a copy of The Atlantic, or something, to take to the Dr. office. They didn't carry one magazine that was even slightly left-wing. It was utter garbage.

And they also demand that artists "clean up" their music before it can be sold at WalMart, and many do. This is the kind of crap Alanis Morrissette (Spelling? I don't know, I doubled everything)was protesting the other night.
