Daily U.S. Casualties 6/8/2004


As of Monday, 820 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 603 died as a result of hostile action and 217 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 18; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, four; Poland, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and the Netherlands have reported one each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 682 U.S. soldiers have died -- 494 as a result of hostile action and 188 of nonhostile causes, according to the military's numbers as of Monday.

A U.S. soldier was killed Monday by a roadside bomb near Iskandariyah.

Five Army National Guardsmen were killed Friday in Baghdad in an attack on their convoy:


Army 1st Lt. Erik. S. McCrae, 25, Portland, Ore.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Cottage Grove, Ore.


Army Sgt. Justin L. Eyerly, 23, Salem, Ore.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Cottage Grove, Ore.


Army Spc. Justin W. Linden, 22, Portland, Ore.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Cottage Grove, Ore.


Army Sgt. Frank T. Carvill, 51, Carlstadt, N.J.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery, Lawrenceville, N.J.


Army Spc. Christopher M. Duffy, 26, Brick, N.J.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery, Lawrenceville, N.J.


Two New Jersey National Guardsmen died Saturday in Baghdad in an attack on their vehicle:


Army Sgt. Humberto F. Timoteo, 25, Newark, N.J.; assigned to Battery A, 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery, Morristown, N.J.


Army Spc. Ryan E. Doltz, 26, Mine Hill, N.J.; assigned to Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery, Lawrence, N.J.


Army Pfc. Melissa J. Hobart, 22, Ladson, S.C.; collapsed while on guard duty and died Sunday in Baghdad; assigned to Company E, 215th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.


Army Sgt. Melvin Y. Mora, 27, Columbia, Mo.; killed Sunday in Taji when his camp was hit by a mortar attack; assigned to the Army Reserve's 245th Maintenance Company, St. Louis, Mo.
