I need help researching something re: Bush and Hitler
A while ago, when Rummy was still out and about, he said something along the lines of (paraphrasing) "Opponents of the war that are openly criticizing the war are risking the safety of our soldiers and of Americans at home." Does anyone remember that? It's a reoccurring theme among the Right Wingers, and it keeps coming up in different ways.

This is my question. I could swear that I read somewhere a while ago that Hitler had stated something very similar, that criticizing the government weakens the state. Am I mistaken? Am I going crazy? Does anyone remember reading or hearing about Hitler making such a statement? If so, can anyone provide the exact words?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for your help in advance!

3. Nice to meet you. Welcome to DU!
While I'd have to agree with AZDemDist6 about not needing to play the "hitler card", here are a couple of links you may want to check out.

Support of self-censorship by the press during the current war has even come from New York Times columnist William Safire, a consistent and sometimes courageous defender of the Bill of Rights. Before the U.S. State Department killed an exclusive Voice of America (VOA) interview with the Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, Safire wrote a column, "Equal time for Hitler?" in which he insisted that "VOA is the wrong voice in this area in wartime."

War on Iraq: its rationale
A few days ago I received an email containing a quote from Hermann Goering, the president of the Reichstag in Hitler's Nazi Germany and the C-in-C of Luftwaffe. I would like to share the quotation with the readers of Dawn. It reads as follows:

"Naturally the common people don't want war. Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. "But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the biddings of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

5. Thank you!
For the welcome and the info, both you and AZDemDist6.

I am not really going to be using this against Bush supporters. I know they have this way of laughing it off and making me sound like a fool for DARING to compare Bush to Hitler. I was just having a discussion with a few friends that pretty much agree with me - they might actually be farther left than I am. I thought it would be pretty interesting if I could actually find something in print.

Again, thanks for the info and the welcome!

6. No problem.
You might want to google a little bit for "hitler quotes" or "hitler speeches". I did that a while back and it freaked me out how closely some of his speeches resemble some of *s speeches.

4. I read that in the JFK biography. Everyone in gov't says that
to justify covering up what they're doing. Can't tell the people what's going on because they'll loose faith in their government. Sure. Maybe we'll have more public hangings of politicans.
