Investment Rarities
They've been around for a while.
Pretty reputable, I think.

I paid $475 in '85.
In '94 they were at $315.
Up and down they go and where they stop, nobody knows.

9. Actually .48375 ounce
Current gold price $1790 X .48375 = $866 "melt" value

12. I think we're confusing different coins here

$10 eagle-- former circulating US gold coin that had a face value of $10 and gold content of .48375 ounce. Minted sporadically from 1795 to 1933, and once again in 1984.

$10 gold eagle-- 1/4 ounce bullion coin that Uncle Sam has been producing since 1986.

1/2 ounce gold eagle-- actually carries a face value of $25 (as if that really means anything), minted since 1986.

5. I would sell any numismatics and buy gold bullion.
I bet you wish you bought gold bullion in 85 instead. If you don't sell now and get gold bullion you'll regret it.

8. There was a reason for numismatics back then.
IRS began to require sellers to record bullion sales for tax purposes.
Not so on numismatics.
This ain't my first time at this rodeo.

11. For me, personally, I would rather have numismatic coins
These days, the price is right around melt for a lot of them, but if gold goes down, the numismatic pieces probably won't go down as fast as strictly bullion coins.

And if I'm lucky, I can sometimes find a better date numismatic piece, or one that is a condition that gives it a premium, at melt value.

17. I'd hang on to pre-1933 common date US gold.

They can be declared as "numismatic" coins, whereas gold bullion coins cannot. The exemption in the 1933 order banning gold ownership excluded coins with "numismatic" value. A 1928 $20 gold piece is now a numismatic coin, for instance.

18. Considering that Uncle Sam has been selling bullion coins
since the American Arts series of 1980-84, I don't think that he would be able to recall them without a big fight. And some US bullion issues can even be included in IRAs, as long as they include the official box and papers

10. That's a pretty good price for common $10 eagles
Current melt value is $865

The temptation to sell is great.

14. Hold On To Your Gold
Unless you must sell, hold on to your gold. Gold will be going a lot higher in another year or so, and then higher still.

What was the date of the first ever post on DU? I remember seeing the banner at the 'innauguration' on January 21, 2001. One bright spot in a very shitty day. I think people were throwing eggs as the limo passed by.
