OK, I'm looking for an energy efficient hdtv
I'm looking at this one, the "green tv" from Phillips

http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_language_us/_productid_42PFL5603D_27_US_CONSUMER

it supposedly is very efficient and is manufactured without
toxic materials etc.
If anyone has a take on this, I'd like to hear it.

In addition, I am trying to compare my current 20 year old
tv's energy uses -
the label on the back does not give me wattage-
just
150 amps
and
120 volts.
Any engineers out there that can tell me
what this means, and what I should look for
to beat my current set?

1. Use this formula of P = I x V
P = power in watts
I = Amps
V = Volts

P = 150 amps x 120 volts
P = 18,000 watts

That's WAY OFF. Are you sure it isn't 15 amps???????

3. You should find your self a watt-meter.
I use the Kill-a-watt.

It lets you know the power draw of anything up to 1800 watts. I found out the hard way that my beautiful desklamp cost more to operate than my entire home theater. So, it went to the garage sale.

Unless you watch TV 24/7, you'll probably just want to get more efficient everywhere else.

265 Watts is pretty rough on that new TV, but compared to a lot of others, its 100-300 Watts less draw. Your old TV, depending on its size might draw even more though.

HDTVs draw so much that some reports are expecting more powerplants to be built in the future solely to pick up the additional draw.

5. Your wall socket breaker can't handle 150 Amps...
Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 06:21 PM by Howzit
Your TV should use about 1.5 Amps: 1.5 Amps at 120 Volts would equal 180 Watts.

Your wall socket breaker is probably rated at 10 Amps; so no way is the TV drawing 150 Amps.

6. take a look at rear screen projection models

you can't hang 'em on the wall, but they pull less power, the picture is great and initial cost is lower than LCD sets. I've had a Sony for about a year. Looks great, works fine.
