New Edition Of Times Comprehensive Atlas Erases 15% Of Ice On Its Map Of Greenland
The new edition of the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World has turned an area of Greenland the size of the UK and Ireland "green", as it charts the retreat of once-permanent ice cover.

Cartographers have had to erase 15 per cent of the ice on the world's largest island in the 13th edition of the atlas, reflecting the retreat of Greenland's glaciers over the past 12 years in face of a warming climate.

They have also included a new island off the coast of Greenland, named "Warming Island" (Uunartoq Qeqertoq), which has appeared as a separate piece of land several miles long as the ice melts and is large enough to be shown on the map.

The atlas documents a number of other environmental changes, including the break up of the Antarctic Wilkins ice shelf and the "ice bridge" that linked it to Charcot Island. The Aral Sea has shrunk by three-quarters since 1967, while only a small proportion of Lake Chad still remains.

Clarification on The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World - 13th edition

http://www.harpercollins.co.uk/News_and_Events/News/Pages/Clarification-on-The-Times-Comprehensive-Atlas-of-the-World-13th-edition.aspx

The Times Atlas is renowned for its authority and we do our utmost to maintain that reputation. In compiling the content of the atlas, we consult experts in order to depict the world as accurately as possible. For the launch of the latest edition of the atlas (The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, 13th edition), we issued a press release which unfortunately has been misleading with regard to the Greenland statistics. We came to these statistics by comparing the extent of the ice cap between the 10th and 13th editions (1999 vs 2011) of the atlas. The conclusion that was drawn from this, that 15% of Greenland’s once permanent ice cover has had to be erased, was highlighted in the press release not in the Atlas itself. This was done without consulting the scientific community and was incorrect. We apologize for this and will seek the advice of scientists on any future public statements. We stand by the accuracy of the maps in this and all other editions of The Times Atlas.

Oh yeah. An apology maybe in order as well.

Reuters is saying the new atlas is bogus. All it would take to confirm is comparing google earth images (they are usually only about a year old) with the maps in the Atlas.

Edit: Just tried it. Started at this link and then looked at Greenland with maps.google. Areas shown bare on the map have glaciers all the way to the sea on the satellite image.

The Atlas is bogus. This isn't going to help our cause.
