Hand grenade explodes inside car in Salem, Massachusetts (one person injured)
SALEM, Mass. -- A car has exploded in Salem and is being blamed on a hand grenade going off inside the vehicle, officials said.

Neighbors in the area said the explosion shook their walls.

No one was hurt in the incident.

One person, who was burned however, is being transported to hospital, but no word on their condition.

The talking lizard says this isn't covered on your insurance.

3. Are hand grenades legal now? Since assault weapons are OK, it's not much
of a stretch to envision hand grenades being legal as well. People need them for protection.

Or, for hunting. If they can't hit that Deer with a gun, they'll blow it up!

6. You can use hand grenades for getting rid of ground hogs
Not to mention for catching fish.

4. no one was hurt....but one person taken to hospital with burns???
apparently if you get burned....it's not an injury and it doesn't hurt.

10. A GI handgrenade would have destroyed the car, so indeed the story sounds suspicious

8. I'm a little bit skeptical ...
That looks like a lot of damage to the vehicle and the building next to it. I don't remember grenades having that much explosive force, just enough to send little metal fragments everywhere. I'm guessing something stronger blew up that vehicle. (I call it a vehicle, because I can't tell from the wreckage if it's a car or truck)

11. Update: WHDH now says Salem, NH and not MA
Man injured in car explosion

SALEM, N.H. -- A car exploded in Salem, sending one person to the hospital.

The blast happened Thursday morning in a mobile home park.

A man got in his car, and when he smelled gas, he got out.

The vehicle then exploded.

Two, mobile homes were damaged, and the man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

So, when I posted Salem, NH the first time... it was probably WHDH that had it wrong?

Or had it right, got it wrong... and corrected it?

12. That makes more sense - gasoline
There would be enough energy in a good gas/air mix to cause that kind of damage.

If it was gas, I'd bet the "moron" got out, then slammed the door, causing a spark that ignited it, and also containing the explosion so it would do the most damage. If he just got out and left the door open, nothing would have happened. Even if it ignited somehow, the force would have just been a big "whoosh" out the open door, no bent metal.

again, just guessing.

13. WHDH completely mis-reported this story
WHDH mis-reported the explosion as taking place in Salem, Mass instead of Salem, NH.
They also claimed the explosion was caused by a grenade.
Looks like it was a plumber's acetylene tank.
WHDH-- YOUR BAD!

14. "Grenade" makes for a better "story"
and might get a lot of interviews with BATFE, FBI, DHS.

But a plumber with acetylene? Nothing to report here.
