Federal agents knew it was time to bust a Greenview gun ring when one of their own was robbed while making an undercover deal with gang members.

The undercover informant had plans to buy an AK-47, an Uzi and three handguns for $1,600 in June 2010 as part of an investigation into a gang that was illegally selling weapons, said Jay Richardson, an assistant U.S. Attorney in Columbia. But one of the gun dealers set up the informant to be robbed.

The informant was not hurt, but that’s when investigators from a special U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Violent Crimes Task Force decided to take down the nine men involved, Richardson said.

Authorities on Wednesday revealed the existence of the gun ring, just days after the last of the nine men involved had been sentenced to federal prison. The five-month investigation in early 2010 led to 20 guns being removed from the streets in Columbia’

No mention of FFLs or assault rifles. Article looks like an ATF puff piece.

So I guess the guns were just going round and round. They had always been there ...

Certainly none of them was ever transferred from someone in legal possession to someone not.

I wonder where they came from ...
