There are at least as many CCW permitees in the US as there are Toyota Camrys.
Toyota claims in one of their ads that there are currently six million Camrys currently registered in the US.
Sounds plausible, the damn things are near ubiquitous. When I heard this, it reminded me that, per certain estimates,
there are the same number of people with concealed carry permits in the US, and possibly more.

So when you are out and about, just remember- There is at least one person out there with a pistol permit for every Toyota
Camry you see. THAT is what the expansion of CCW means, at least in part.

5. I wanted to give a graphic example. I daresay the guns are in better shape.....
I've seen a number as high as 8 million mentioned here, so that would mean "for every Toyota Camry you might see, there's at least one concealed weapon permit holder out there somewhere."

27. You appear not to have noticed the quotes around the word 'logic'.
Are you not familiar with our Mr. Hilson's favorite argumentum ad populum?

He regularly emphasizes the number of people in the US that do not carry, as if the popularity of the practice
had something to do with its legitimacy.

30. no, I think not
He regularly emphasizes the number of people in the US that do not carry, as if the popularity of the practice had something to do with its legitimacy.

I think the unpopularity of the practice has something to do with ... the unpopularity of the practice. I rather suspect he does too.

When a practice is unpopular, the unpopularity might be taken as saying something about the people who do engage in the practice, of course.

I fail to understand how emphasizing the unpopularity of a practice would be legitimately interpreted as being intended to say something about its legitimacy.

What would that even mean? Is brushing one's teeth a "legitimate" practice? A lot of people do it. How about brushing one's teeth three times a day? Not many people do that.

"Legitimate practice" really usually means "practice that complies with the law/rules". You're absolutely right, popularity of a practice has nothing to do with that. Now if only I saw someone suggesting it did.

8. That's 25 states, representing 205.4 million people.
That's taking 2010 census figures rounded to the nearest hundred thousand. If we take those figures as an average, and extrapolate to the remaining one third of the US population at 309 million, then we're looking at about 7.6 million people with carry permits.

New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusettes, for example, are may-issue and probably have a very small number of permits even though combined they're about 35 million or so.

10. We're working on that "may-issue" thing here in Massachusetts.
Quincy is the most vulnerable municipality, IMO, since the police chief refuses to issue any permits whatsoever.
I doubt Tom Menino and his Illegal Mayors Against Guns can afford to pay for their defense.
We WILL carry!

12. Well, there were some more estimates to be found, but I didn't include them in the count....
.. since I couldn't source them.

AL - 350,000
AR - 62,000
CO - 17,695
GA - 368,987
IS - 36,000
MA - 56,000 (of 280,000 total permits, 80% are not 'LTC' -- couldn't verify though)
NM - 17,000

Some of these were just mentioned in passing in various newspaper stories, but they still represent another 900k.

15. There was a thread a couple of months ago were posters estimated the numbers.
Giving the recent strong upsurge in CCW applications the estimate that most posters accepted was about 10 million.

AZ, WY, VT, & AK are a bit tricky. Anybody can carry, open or concealed, without a permit so the only reason to get a permit is if one is going to travel to another state. So a lot of people won't bother getting one, but that doesn't mean that they are unarmed.

24. "that doesn't mean that they are unarmed"
And conversely, the fact that someone has obtained a permit to carry a concealed firearm does not mean, by absolutely any means, that they are "armed" at any given time or that they don't leave home without their trusty gun.

Some may obtain the permit for particular reasons, like making late-night bank deposits, and may be people to whom it would simply not occur to tote the thing along to their kids' soccer games or to the mall, for instance.

In those states, some people may have permits, so they can travel to other states, other people may not bother getting a permit.

28. I doubt if many people would notice ...
I tend to wear cargo pants or shorts with LARGE pockets. In the area of Florida where I now live many people wear such clothing so I don't really look out of place.

I'm sure the really wise or alert people such as cops would suspect that I might be carrying especially if they noticed I use a 1 3/4" Wilderness Instructor belt. (All the locals know I carry.) This can obviously have disadvantages but can also have advantages.

When I lived in Tampa, I used to wear a photographers vest which is a dead give away that you are carrying when you don't also have a large camera with you. I didn't wear it to conceal a firearm. I wore it because of the amazing amount of stuff I could carry in it when I was at work. The people who worked with me often were amazed just how heavy it was when they picked it up off a chair. If they needed Vivarin, aspirin, band aids, antibiotic cream, a ruler or tape measure, a screwdriver or a Gerber Multitool, scissors, pens, pencils or a pad of paper, batteries, a calculator, dictionary or cigars they knew just who to ask. I was the group leader on the graveyard shift and I was a walking supply store for the people who worked for me.

But in the winter I would wear this jacket if I stopped to do some shopping on the way to or home from work. Occasionally I would encounter some young guys on the street who might well have been gang members as they were fairly common where I lived. We would approach each other and I would check them out while they checked me out. We all would nod respectfully as we passed each other. I'm sure they suspected that I was carrying just as I suspected that they were.

Not the most expansive pockets.

I love my maxpedition messenger bag, it serves the same purpose as your vest did, if not quite so much. Phone, keys, wallet, flashlight, knife, multi-tool, flash drive w/ linux recovery partition, and CPR shield.

31. Jeans do have smaller pockets. Now that I think back ...
I probably did wear the vest to help conceal the bulge in my pocket from the S&W snub nosed revolver that I was carrying. I was also wearing jeans at that time. I started wearing cargo pants and shorts after I retired.

33. Couple of additions and subtractions
Michigan - 275,978
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/msp/ccw_county_report_approved_273955_7.pdf

Oregon - 97,492
From Chris Bird's book, 4th edition, stats from 2004
http://www.privateerpublications.com/book-chm.html

Georgia - They are an old wave state, pre Florida, and those tend to be high. I've seen guesses between 200K and 300K. My own SWAG is 236K.

New Hampshire - That's another old wave state, and I've seen guesses between 25K and 60K. I SWAG it at 35K.

Washington - 329,154 (as of late July)
They don't publish it online, but if you Email DOL they will usually respond in a day or two.

Maryland is a May Issue state and is actually WAY lower than 40K. In 2006, I helped MSI (Maryland Shall Issue) crunch data that they got from the Maryland State Police. It's my former home state, and I like a good windmill.
- 11,403 permits issued to cops, and those permits are now mostly unnecessary because of HR218
- 14,869 issued to corrections, security, armored car guards, judges, bail bondsmen, and the like
- 12,565 issued to business owners, and those are usually very restricted in terms of even when and how the person can even use the license--like between the hours of 6 PM and 8 PM, Monday through Friday, to make night drop deposits at the bank
- 661 issued for protection

With 41 Right To Carry states, there are a couple more with 5K, 10K, or 20K each.

We're easily at 5 million, and possibly approaching 6 million.
