If that seems excessively granular, Christ knows there's no shortage of good Anglo-Saxon words with obvious plural forms if you want to side-step that issue (dicks, cocks, dongs, todgers, etc.).

Also, your counter-examples of "octopus" and "hippopotamus" are poorly chosen, because both are, strictly speaking, Latinized spellings of Greek words, octopous ("eight feet") and hippos potamou ("horse of the river," cf. the Dutch word for hippopotamus, nijlpaard, lit. "Nile horse"). Thus, the correct plural of "octopus" is actually "octopodes" while that of "hippopotamus" should really be "hippoi potamou" (similar to "passers-by," "attorneys-general" or "brothers-in-law").

And if you're dealing with Latin words ending in -us, you have to be careful that the word you're using isn't a u-declination word rather than a o-declination word. Annulus, for example, is o-declination and the (Latin) plural is annuli, whereas manus (hand) is u-declination and its plural is also manus.

Sorry, classical education; twenty-one years out of secondary education and it's still firmly entrenched.
