Professor in Idaho who killed student threatened to kill earlier
Professor in Idaho murder-suicide had threatened to murder another woman almost a year before he was given a concealed weapon permit.

"A former University of Idaho professor who last week killed a student with whom he'd been involved, then fatally shot himself, had reportedly threatened to kill another woman as well. That threat was made nearly a year before he showed up outside 22-year-old Katy Benoit's house in Moscow, Idaho, and shot her 11 times, new court documents reveal." http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationnow/2011/09/idaho-murder-suicide-bustamante-benoit.html

1. Bustamante was cleared by State AND Federal Authorities
For his carry permit. http://www.chron.com/news/article/Sheriff-UI-professor-had-cleared-background-check-2150977.php

Latah County Sheriff Wayne Rausch said no flags were raised when Ernesto Bustamante, 31, applied for the firearms permit, which was issued about five months before the murder-suicide in late August.

Bustamante, who is from Venezuela, cleared a background check from state authorities that was processed through the FBI, Rausch said.

"There was actually a comment on it from Homeland Security saying he was eligible to get a (permit)," Rausch said.

In retrospect, Rausch said he wishes there had been a red flag when processing Bustamante's firearms application, but there wasn't.

And WHY did the University do nothing about Bustamante when he had a sexual relationship with another female student before Benoit?

The police reports also show Bustamante was sexually involved with at least one other student at the University of Idaho. An anonymous complaint was filed with the school via their hot line.

A friend of Benoit's told KHQ reporter Gaby Fleischman that the school knew about other relationships between Bustamante and students. She said when Benoit walked in to the office to file her complaint against the former professor, she described his threats, and administrators knew exactly who she was talking about, even before she gave them his name.

A university spokesperson said she can't release information about Bustamante because of privacy laws, but the school did petition the courts to allow the release of Bustamante's personnel records. Those documents should reveal more about Bustamante's relationships, and complaints filed against him.

2. That's a good question. From past threads, it seems that UI has some
extraordinarily lax restrictions on faculty/student relationships, and I really hope a major self-examination is going on there...
