Police: Gun, sniper book found in Ore. man's car (after high school football game)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/20/ap/business/main20123453.shtml

(AP) GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A Southern Oregon man is being held after he was stopped leaving a football game and authorities say a subsequent search of his house and car turned up military rifles, bullets and a book about a sniper killing people at a sporting event.

Rafael Enrique Amoroso was arrested Oct. 7 on a charge of driving under the influence after leaving a high school football game in Grants Pass.

Federal authorities have asked that he be held without bail while they investigate firearms charges. The 27-year-old Amoroso hasn't been indicted.

An affidavit says police found a loaded pistol in his glove compartment after he was stopped leaving the game, along with an untitled book with information about a sniper killing people at a sporting event.

1. Oh, you're really grasping at straws now.
He owns a rifle while simultaneously owning fiction in which a rifle is used.

Lame isn't a strong enough description for this OP.

4. "Arsenal"

"military rifles". Yeah, I have one... a WW2 Spanish Mauser bolt-action.

And two .22 rifles. One of which has a detachable "assault magazine" of 25 rounds.

"Arsenal"

The only thing you have on him is that he routinely keeps a HANDGUN in his car. Which is where they found the gun AFTER he got busted for DUI.

5. The article does not say the book was fiction - it was untitled, with
information about shooting at a sporting event. Nobody goes to fiction for 'information.' That leaves two possibilities - a non-fiction recounting of a shooting at a sporting event, or a police manual for dealing with a shooter at a sporting event.

Now, I grant that SOME moron might turn to fiction for 'information' - but no reporter would interpret the possession of a novel as being for 'information'. Inspiration, maybe, but not information. People who work with words know better.

10. "People who work with words know better."
Sadly, no, far to many don't and prove it every day.

Perhaps a licencing scheme and registration before publishing would instill more responsibility in those fools...

13. People go to fiction for inspiration, which is where my assumption was coming from.

Of course, your two possibilities are at least as equally likely.

16. Possible explanation.
Cops to reporter: He had some rifles and a book about a guy shooting people at a sporting event.

Reporter types: "information about shooting people at a sporting event."

6. Hasn't been indicted yet? Why? Was his car parked on school grounds?
That is often illegal, what with a handgun in the glove box. Figured he'd be charged with that at the least.

Besides, he has an arsenal!11 Though those are usually NOT illegal. Hmm...I think I have a few of those myself.

14. I wonder if the book was "Two Minute Warning"?
It was published and made into a movie in the 1970s. The book was pretty good as it got into the psychology of such a person. The movie was a waste of film.

15. So, basically, a DUI and possibly trespassing with the firearm.
MAYBE a misdemeanor for the gun, loaded inside the car, depending on that state's laws.

Lotta maybes there.

18. Other than the offense
of driving under the influence of alcohol, I don't believe this man is guilty of anything more than offending the sensibilities of some judgmental people and some overzealous LEO's.

What "military rifles" did he possess? If they really were military rifles, from what armory did he steal them? On what basis was a search warrant for his house signed? How is possession of "hundreds of rounds" of ammunition illegal? I have THOUSANDS of rounds of ammunition locked in my safe, and, other than being consumed by the occasional range trip, it sits idle.

Either he has provided far more evidence of criminal activity, as yet unmentioned in the news, to the LEO's investigating him, or he is being wrongfully attacked for nothing more than a common driving offense.
