|
An "Assault Weapon" is Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following: * Folding or telescoping stock * Pistol grip * Bayonet mount * Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one * Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device which enables the launching or firing of rifle grenades)
Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following: * Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip * Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor * Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold * Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more * A semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm
Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following: * Folding or telescoping stock * Pistol grip * Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds * Detachable magazine
Please share some ideas. :)

4. It amounts to nothing more than regulating cosmetic features. |
|
And as we saw after 1993, manufacturers simply modified the looks and designs of these weapons to comply with the law, although they were still just as deadly.
Truly one of the stupidest and futile gun control measures to date, considering that these categories of weapons account for less than 1% of all gun crime.
And it helped Democrats lose control of Congress in 1994, a real "winner" for sure.

7. Agree with everything here! |
|
The category of "assault weapons" was created to make people fearful of their neighbors owning "military" armament.
A lot of hunting rifles are more powerful than military rifles.
The adjustable stock is available on a lot of rifles used in competitive shooting.
It is interesting to me to see many Democrats support guns. I wonder what the true split is of supporters to non. Maybe it's just because the anti-gunners don't get involved in these discussions.
My father taught me to shoot when I was 7 or 8 and he was raised as a Quaker.
The founding fathers included gun ownership in the constitution because of the thought that governments get out of control and try to suppress the people.
The Jews found out that being pacifist and not knowing how to use a gun made it difficult to resist their oppressors in WWII.
Very seldom do the police ever show up during the perpetration of a crime. They usually show up after and unless there is a murder, they take a report and figure your lucky to still be alive.
I got into politics because of gun issues. I wrote to Biden and told him I would vote him out of office if he didn't stop messing with the gun issues (look at him now) but it did hurt the Dems back in 1994. Today I vote because of all the other issues with corruption and Congress being bought and the redistribution of wealth to the upper class but I do get a twinge when I see the rights of law-abiding citizens being trampled.
These are just some additional thoughts that anti-gunners don't have the time to read about because they aren't interested but if they understood all the reasons why gun ownership is important they would be a little more tolerant.
How many people know which of their neighbors own guns? That's how much law abiding citizens value gun ownership... they don't throw it in your face they just quietly go about living and letting others live their lives.
Respectfully submitted...

12. Gun owners are under regular attack. |
|
Just speaking to defend ourselves. If we were not under attack, there would be no reason for the discussion. I've come to the conclusion that gun politics is an Orwellian ideal to divert resources from actual social problems. UFFDA!

22. what a fascinating dog's breakfast |
|
you guys want to talk about guns, gays and God
Who are these "guys" you address?
People who advocate stringent firearms control and equal rights for GLBT people and keeping religion out of schools, government and courts? They should what, shut up about the rights of sexual minorities? Let the religious wackos run the show?
People who carry guns around in public and advocate violating the rights of GLBT people and want their religion recognized as the law of the land? Now that I can understand, but why you'd be telling them to leave your guns alone I can't fathom.
Those are the two largest groups you'll find when you shuffle the deck, methinks.
Which of these were you directing you remarks to? Or were you talking to, say, the small group of people who advocate stringent firearms control, advocate violating the rights of GLBT people and want their religion recognized as the law of the land?
Why bother? would be my question ...

6. We all know the kind of gun is irrelevant. |
|
The difference between living and dying when you're shot is if the gun had a pistol grip or folding stock. It makes the bullets more deadly or something. What a stupid law.

Things designed for accurate target shooting suddenly become evil.
Some of the criteria here are the most idiotic, ignorant things imaginable, but the furniture ones take the cake.

10. I'll admit I don't see the point of "assault pistols" |
|
An "assault pistol" is typically a semi-auto-only version of an SMG design with the stock removed to make it legally a pistol rather than a short-barreled rifle. All the drawbacks of a real SMG without the main benefit, namely automatic fire. Plus many of the designs were cheap, shoddy and unreliable. But that doesn't mean I favored their being banned, even if they were supposedly popular with gang members, if for no other reason that if gang members are going to be using firearms I'd much prefer they used awkward, inaccurate jam-o-matics.

and listed as a pistol on the 4473. Built it with a 7 1/2 in barrel. Took me a bit of doing to get it to cycle properly. Not really good for anything but the novelty of it.

I refrained from "voting" in any of these polls, so as not to skew the results by inserting a non-domestic opinion. Not that US firearms policy doesn't affect Canada, which of course it does.
After seeing the glee with which some here (and I am sure many elsewhere) went trotting off to "vote" in a poll about Canada's firearms registry, I abandoned my scruples.

...if you're an RGR owner. One month before the AW ban was signed Strum/Ruger sold for $12.81. By 1995 share prices were up over $15 on average and dividends were up 20%. For 1996 dividends went up 11% over the prior year. Almost 2 years to the day after the ban was signed, the stock split and continued generally higher in price.
Prices took a big hit during 2008 when the market tanked but after the inauguration... zoom. ;)

24. This poll reveals quite a bit about gun-controllers... |
|
They aren't content with banning the AK-47 semi-autos, they are in favor of banning ANY gun which has stuff sticking out in all directions. Even shotguns!
Prohibition is the addiction.
