Local deputy almost victim of home invasion
{excerpt}

"It's kind of a startling thing to wake up and have someone peering into your room like that."

Around 1:00 a.m., Wedding says the burglar was using a cell phone to peep in his windows. Wedding says that's when he went to the window with his 45-caliber gun.

"I regrouped pretty quick. I had my weapon nearby. It was a great equalizer."

The chief deputy says the suspect ran, only making off with only a gas can from his shed.

1. Cop says he needed more home security, not

a bigger gun.

Wedding also says if he had a lock on his shed, the criminal may have gotten nothing. He's now hoping someone in his neighborhood was watching out, the same advice he gives other Tri-Staters to protect themselves at this time of year.

"A lot of time thieves are opportunists. They're going to work to their advantage, and now is a good time for them to work."

Wedding says his case in still an on-going investigation. He recommends a few tips to prevent home invasion such as good lighting, a dog, locking your doors and windows, neighborhood watch groups, security lighting, lights on timers, and an alarm system.

2. The gun is the last line of defense; all those others are your passive defense.
Always put up as many layers of defense as you can afford to keep from ever having to use a firearm.
