3. They kept those screen shots tight.
I want to see what's going on behind the scenes. When 25% of the students and teachers go so far as to pool their money and take out a full page ad, there must be some protests.

Of course they are probably in a protest zone somewhere on the edge of town.

4. my letter to Calvin college psychology depart chair a few days ago:
May 18, 2005

Hi:

You're in the news. As a psychologist, I sure hope that some of you were associated with this as per The Chronicle of Higher Education. I have been working on this project in NC re: the church there. I include some information.

God help us all: the country is being run by theocrats who have no respect for anyone and certainly not for people who are Christians and respect others' rights.

Please pass this around as you see fit.

item 1:
* MORE THAN 100 PROFESSORS at Calvin College, in Michigan, have
signed a letter criticizing the policies of President Bush,
who is scheduled to speak at the evangelical Christian
institution's spring commencement on Saturday. The professors
cite conflicts between their "understanding of what
Christians are called to do" and many of the president's
policies.

5. The banner
at the bottom of the screen mentioned that Dubya was being protested by "some" students and faculty. Otherwise CNN is giving the asshole more free airtime to spout his senseless platitudes...

speaking of which....

he's pounding away on "service"...says that service is an individual choice and he urges all to choose to serve.....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

"serve"? "Service"....miss any recruiting goals lately? Isn't that code for military?

18. They're looking for rich husbands
because landing a Texas mafia husband and squirting out an heir and a spare are their only real functions in life.

It sucks being poor, but I've always been very grateful not to have been born rich.

8. Faith based = Christian.
Did you see at the end of his speech when he waved his hand and said "God bless you." He did it as if he were the Pope or something.

15. My dad studied there
as did a bunch of his Dutch Canadian brothers. Our family are hardcore Calvinists.

This is weird for me.

Not to mention the CSIS picked him out at 14 to work for Canadian Intelligence Services and the CIA talked to him when he was down there.

Weird.

22. I don't know
The whole conversation weirded me out. I don't have a very good relationship with the old man anyway.

But he told me the CIA nailed him when he was there.

I asked a couple of his brothers and they told me it was probably because of his language skills - and he's a smart fella'.

He was the first of the lot to learn English when my Opa (grandfather) immigrated with 10 kids from den Hague to Vancouver in 1953.

16. been out painting the fence in our backyard!
then came to see the computer ... won't trouble my spirit watching CNN or any of the rest of the bush propaganda machine.

... i like the transformation our fence is taking with the new coat of paint... and also had to take paint off of my face, eyeglasses, shoes, etc.

so, for all of the above reasons i was not watching the cretin, CNN or any of the rest of the news and i think i won't tune in either for the rest of the afternoon/evening.

just too much propaganda.

19. I watched the little emporer address the Catholic Prayer Breakfast
and he made a total fool out of himself. He didn't seem to fully appreciate where he was. Referred to us the the "Catholic Religion", as though we're not real Christians like the fundies. God I'm so tired of this fool occupying the White House.

20. Open letter to Bush from concerned faculty of Calvin College
An Open Letter to the President of the United States of America, George W. Bush

On May 21, 2005, you will give the commencement address at Calvin College. We, the undersigned, respect your office, and we join the college in welcoming you to our campus. Like you, we recognize the importance of religious commitment in American political life.

We seek open and honest dialogue about the Christian faith and how it is best expressed in the political sphere. While recognizing God as sovereign over individuals and institutions alike, we understand that no single political position should be identified with God's will, and we are conscious that this applies to our own views as well as those of others. At the same time we see conflicts between our understanding of what Christians are called to do and many of the policies of your administration.

As Christians we are called to be peacemakers and to initiate war only as a last resort. We believe your administration has launched an unjust and unjustified war in Iraq.

As Christians we are called to lift up the hungry and impoverished. We believe your administration has taken actions that favor the wealthy of our society and burden the poor.

As Christians we are called to actions characterized by love, gentleness, and concern for the most vulnerable among us. We believe your administration has fostered intolerance and divisiveness and has often failed to listen to those with whom it disagrees.

As Christians we are called to be caretakers of God's good creation. We believe your environmental policies have harmed creation and have not promoted long-term stewardship of our natural environment.

Our passion for these matters arises out of the Christian faith that we share with you. We ask you, Mr. President, to re-examine your policies in light of our God-given duty to pursue justice with mercy, and we pray for wisdom for you and all world leaders.

--Concerned faculty, staff, and emeriti of Calvin College
