Poll question: Will Texas secede if Obama/Biden win? |
|
Right now, McGrumpy and Moose Meat have a +12 rating in Texas. I have been to Texas, it is a very RED state (among other things), and I think they will try to secede if they win.
What say you?

Secession is easy to do, and extremely common. I would say without question, secession is a realistic possibility... not!

Despite my cynical-sounding username, I don't really consider TX red to *that* extreme. If any area of the country were likely to want to secede over Obama-Biden winning, I'd figure it would be the consistently deep red Idaho-Wyoming-Utah region. Though, it might be kind of difficult for such a landlocked area to successfully "secede." haha

right in GWB's adopted hometown of Midland, and I doubt your scenario happens. Yes, there's a lot of hatred for Obama here, but good luck seceding. Asking for big trouble in that case. If it did happen, I'd be forced to move for sure.

is it true that every year your state legislators vote on the issue of secession? Something I've heard before, but have never sought an answer on.
I remember when I visited the state capitol in Austin seeing the monument to the confederacy with all the "stars n bars" and a giant monument to the ten commandments on the capitol lawn. It was rather creepy. Especially in a great town like Austin.

Sorry I couldn't give you any insight into it. Really the only thing I know about Texas politics, despite the fact that I was born here and have lived here my entire life, is that Ann Richards was a good governor, GWB was an asshole but didn't screw up anywhere near as bad as he did on the national stage, and that Rick Perry has been a horrible governor. His governance has been eerily similar to GWB's Presidency. Cut from the same cloth though. They are empty suits, vessels for the failed policies of Karl Rove.

at least, anyway. We may not be able to get the State at large, but we can get a few seats to turn it Purple by another election time. I think people focus way too much on turning Blue, but being rosy and purplish is good enough as a start to moving towards Royal Blue.

|
Two election cycles ago he won by over 80% when NO Dem was running against him. His last election he had a Dem opposing him and his winning number was "only" just over 60%. Now think of successful voter registration drives for new voters and how motivated the "not new, always been here" Dems are this time around. What will his number be down to now???

I live in and Texas has A LOT of Liberals/Progressives/Populists who live here. Our biggest problem IS they usually don't bother to VOTE.
It has been tried before during the 90's and it didn't work then and it wouldn't work now.

19. Many of you are underestimating the cities |
|
A significant number of people live in Texas' large cities (San Antonio and Austin metros area populations are ~2 million; Houston and Dallas metro area populations are > 5 million each), and many of the residents are not republicans. The rural areas away from the border with Mexico are certainly red, but the cities are much more heterogeneous.
I see the shift away from republicans already happening due to changing demographics (Hispanic and immigrant populations), increased number of educated workers, and the establishment of several high-tech industries and research facilities throughout the state.

47. So true. Here in Austin, the capitol, where a vote for secession would likely have to take place, |
|
we are blue through and through. We'll kick some serious secessionist ass before they can even attempt to take us out of a country that's finally going the way we want it to. Austin LOVES Obama! In his first visit, 20,000 people showed up to hear him speak, which was the largest rally at the time. The second time, there were 10,000 MORE.
And hell, even in the small towns, the people there are so "patriotic." I don't think they'd be willing to no longer be Americans. They've spent WAY too much money decorating their living rooms with American flag country crafts.

You know nothing about this state, obviously... we are glad you have "been" but didn't "stay" cuz your presence would get in the way of those of people trying to change things bit by bit down here. And it's starting to change...you just have to look at the historically right wing rag Dallas Morning News Endorsements this week to see that..even THEY have endorsed some 15 Dem candidates for positions from judges to the TX House to the head of the TX Dept of Ed. Dallas County residents FIRED ALL of the county's repub judges in 2006.
I think other Texans will agree from what we have seen down here in the past few months, the prez race stats here will be closer than the current polls show (tons of new voters, newly re-energized not-so-new TX Dem voters, etc..).

I live out in the country in Texas and a bunch of neighbors got together the last two weekends and made around 2500 'Obama/Biden for all Texans' signs. When we had our caucus, they had to move it outdoors because the little community center wouldn't even start to hold all the people that showed up. There are lots of libruls in Texas.

In the 2004 Democratic primary 839,231 Texans showed up to vote.
In the 2004 general election 2,832,704 Texas Democrats voted for John Kerry.
During the 2008 Texas Democratic presidential primary, 2,874,986 people voted.
In early September 2008, Democratic voter registration had already surpassed 13 million.
So, make all the fun you want but if our state gives its 34 Electoral votes to Barack Obama, I expect you to eat crow pie.

Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. People of most ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a "sense of humour".
The term derives from the humoural medicine of the ancient Greeks, which stated that a mix of fluids known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally: juice or sap, metaphorically: flavour) controlled human health and emotion.
A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, although the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends on a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence, and context. For example, young children may possibly favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons (e.g. Tom and Jerry). Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour, and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Non-satirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery".
PS thanks to Wiki yet again for 'splain the words.

And what a shame that NJ residents have to put up with the endless shit-canning of their state here at DU, because some brain-dead faux NJ resident became president and ruined the country. (Satirical notice for the clueless.)
Over 2.8 million Texas Democrats cast votes for John Kerry in 2004; I was one of them. My standard request that DU's blanket Texas haters go fuck themselves remains in effect. And we'll discuss my sense of humor about this issue somewhere down the line....

Nice big state, and all freepers can move there. Sure it will be hard on Texas Dems, but we will let them come to the U.S. and give them the freepers houses and do all we can to ease the transition.
Think how much of our border problems will be solved. We'll only have AZ, NM, and CA and the freepers will have to worry about the rest of it. May they be overwhelmed and find Spanish is their offical language within a generation.
Of course we'll have the freep border, but they won't want to come back to our "socialist" paradise, will they?
