Chris McNair indicted
McNair is also the father of Denise McNair, who was one of the four little girls who were killed in the 1963 bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

Former Jefferson County Commissioner Chris McNair made an initial court appearance in Birmingham shortly after 1 p.m. today on federal corruption charges. U.S. Magistrate Judge T. Michael Putnam released McNair on a $50,000 bond secured with his and his wife’s signature.

A federal indictment unsealed earlier in the day charged McNair, who was first elected to the commission in 1986 and resigned his post in March 2001 for personal reasons, with conspiracy and bribery in an investigation of Jefferson County’s $3 billion sewer program. Also charged were several current and former county employees and several contractors.

“This is a grave injustice, and we’re going to fight it,” McNair said in front of the Hugo Black Courthouse after his court appearance with his wife, Maxine, and his attorney, Doug Jones.

Jones said he and the McNairs had not reviewed the indictment closely. Jones said, however, McNair faces only two counts in the 67-count indictment that outline allegations that contractors and engineers paid more than $150,000 to McNair for work done on his photo studio in Birmingham.

2. It has nothing to do with the case
But it is how Chris McNair has always been known.

Some people think it's interesting to know such things. Other people suspect hidden motives.
