Here's why Roy Moore should not be underestimated
Moore latched onto a winning issue in Alabama -- property tax reappraisals -- and in the process makes all his opponents look like mumbling morons. Don Siegelman says he agrees with Moore (bad move, Don) and Lucy Baxley says something unintelligible.

This does not bode well. And it shows why laughing off Moore is a dangerous thing to do.

Moore wants to cancel annual land appraisals

Wants four-year system; Siegelman agrees

DAVID WHITE
News staff writer
MONTGOMERY - Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore and Gov. Bob Riley, who are running for next year's Republican nomination for governor, apparently agree that property appraisals should be done every four years, not annually.

At a press conference Tuesday, Moore called on Riley to cancel a policy of annual reappraisals of property, which the revenue department started to phase in shortly after Riley took office in January 2003.

Democrat Don Siegelman, who hopes to win his party's nomination and return to the state's top job, said he agrees with Moore and believes the next administration can end annual reappraisals by rescinding a state Revenue Department regulation.

Democrat Lucy Baxley said the issue is "easy for a candidate to stand on the outside and demagogue" and said the people should decide.

1. I was leaning towards Lucy, but now drifting toward Don
Sounds like Lucy wants a popular referendum on everything. Democracy is good, but absolute democracy is scary.
