How "Christian" can they be?
I don't know why I allow myself to be constantly shocked and amazed at these groups. How dare they call themselves "Christian!" I have long since distanced myself from all Christian religions, but from the teachings of my youth, I remember Jesus "Christ" being a charitable man that fed the hungry, helped the poor, and healed the sick. Wouldn't Jesus Christ be saddened by the increasing hatred and bigotry of these people for their fellow human beings?

"Alabama President John Giles said the state group disagreed with new directions being taken by the national group, including its support for a higher minimum wage."

"The Alabama group won when voters overwhelmingly rejected Gov. Bob Riley's proposed tax increases and reforms aimed at helping poor families."

1. this dovetails nicely into my post about "using religion"
Alabama is a very religious state. But I think a lot of the so-called Christians in this state have forgotten what the teachings of Jesus Christ really were.

Should our Democratic campaign commercials include a refresher course on the Beatitudes?

Many of our politicians seem to prefer the Old Testament's jealous, wrathful God to the peace and love promoted by Jesus. And by extension, the voters who put them in office do too.

I hate to go there, but is it necessary to remind people what Christianity is really all about?

2. Guess my age is showing...

... but I remember religion in Alabama saying that blacks were second class citizens and separation of the races was a good thing. (This being circa 1962 - 66).

It seems like everything is cyclical.

(On Edit: I was born and lived 39 years in Alabama so this isn't a flame against the South, but more of a 1st Hand experience.)

3. I am originally from Mobile
and I now live in Atlanta. So I understand your thoughts, I know it is not a flame. We have a long way to go and very difficult thoughts and opinions left to fight!
