Redistricting for political benefit almost always involves "packing" your opposition into a given district to make your own safer.
My guess is that the 6th district will be stretched into Montgomery and/or Mobile to pick up additional minority voters... turning the 2nd into a safe R seat.
It's possible that they can draw six safe republican seats while making Sewell one of the safest dems in the country... but if they tried to draw seven republican districts, two or three of them would be vulnerable.
Not that they have a choice. The Voting Rights Act almost certainly prohibits them from cutting up a minority-majority district in that way.
