Check In Alabama DUers
We need an organized list of DU members in Alabama. Sure, I know that we are going through a hard time with all these Bush fans down here, but grassroots is the way to go and we have to start somewhere. So I would really appreciate it if we start here on Democratic Underground. Thanks, BamaLefty.

Name & Town please. :hi:

You know, it's kinda funny. Everyone who knows me, from the most casual acquaintance, knows I'm a Dem. I haven't heard one word about the election. I mean, no one has even mentioned * in my presence. I really expected gloating. I'm go back and forth between pleasantly surprised and seriously annoyed at that lol. At least if someone said something I could vent some of my frustration at the locals lol.

I would love to see some more grassroots operations going on here in Alabama. I know there are Progressives here. I was born in Alabama so we do exist even if we are the minority.

8. BamaBecky here With a big question?
Becky Garrick
Grove Hill, Alabama

:hi:

Are we getting ready to meet up? Just curious? Also can anybody tell me why Alabama was the first state to establish a cabinet level position for Homeland Security? I know we got a big grant and all. Question is why? Was it because the BIG OIL & GAS CORPORATIONS wanted to plant some LNG terminals in Mobile. Or was it because of all the chemical plants or both. Does anybody know the real story?

Thanks, Becky

PM me sometimes! There has got to be more than a half dozen of us?

My thoughts on the matter would have to be too heavily censored to print. x( I'm getting sick and damned tired of the commentary from the peanut gallery on what "we progressives aren't doing/are doing wrong" in the South/Bama. Jesus H Christ, if all these non-Southerners are such freaking experts why the hell am I still trying? Where the fuck are they? We had a long chat at a local meeting this week about the lack of interest in our politics on national level. They can start dictating/criticizing our politics when they actually campaign and contribute here.

Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 05:13 PM by GrpCaptMandrake
we should look at having our conversation on a Liberal Talk network that's already facing South.

I'm proud to say that the Head-On Radio Network (H.O.R.N.) originates in the South. We're growing day by day and are the only liberal network that has actual born and bred Southerners behind the microphone. Me, I'm a born Alabamian.

Let people from around the nation and the world hear that Alabama's not a blood-red haven of hate and bigotry and intolerance and racism and Repiglican ignorance.

We produce over forty hours of Liberal, Progressive Conversation Radio per week. And by "conversation," we mean that callers get all the time they need to share their ideas and observations. None of that "Enough about you, let's talk about me" talk radio that the Repigs invented. This is the beginning of a conversation the South, and the nation, has needed for a long, long time.

Check it out: www.headonradionetwork.com We'll be glad to see you there!

Disclaimer: As the founder of the Head-On Radio Network, I have a burning desire to see it succeed. Part of that desire is showing the rest of the nation that the South is worth fighting for.

On Edit: I just read the link referenced in the OP. Don't you love it when we get "chided?"

14. Hi Becky,
What a small world. I grew up in Grove Hill. I still have tremendous respect for Powers McLeod, Brother Christenberry, and Ben Sawada, who were ministers in the Grove Hill Methodist Church when I was young.

I left Alabama in my 20s and moved to Massachusetts, then Maryland, and finally California. All three states are blue but with Republican governors. I worry what the Republican governors will do to these states, especially Arnold here in California.

16. I don't know what other towns Ben Sawada lived in.
Two years ago my college roommate told me that Ben Sawada is now retired and that he and his wife Lily attend the same church she attends in Montgomery. My roommate says she asked the Sawadas to talk to a church group about their experience in a Japanese internment camp during World War II.

Ben Sawada came to Grove Hill just as I was graduating from college and getting married. I wasn't in Grove Hill enough to get to know his family; I just knew he had two young daughters. When I talked to Ben Sawada two years ago, he told me that he had had a stroke. I think he said that one of his daughters is a concert pianist in San Jose, CA.

By the way, I was born in Andalusia, but I never lived there. There was no hospital in the town where my parents lived at that time, so my mother stayed with her sister in Andalusia when it was time for me to be born.

20. My parents were living in Linden Alabama when I was born
way back in July 1941.

I was 6 months old World War II began. About a year later we moved to Bay Minette, and I can remember my mother talking about how they had to cover the top of the car's headlights so that the enemy would not be able to see the car lights from the air. People were at least as shaken up by Pearl Harbor as they were by 9/11.

I think one reason I did not panic after 9/11 is that I remember how frightened everyone was when I was a child and yet we survived. I remember seeing Franklin Roosevelt say in a newsreel that we have nothing to fear but fear itself. I thought he said, "We have nothing to fear but beer itself." It took me a while to figure that one out.

My childhood was a lot like Scout's in To Kill A Mockingbird. It was bittersweet because I had so much freedom to roam the town and the surrounding areas. I could climb trees and walk through fields and wade in creeks (but remember to watch out for rattlers and moccasins and coral snakes), but with all that physical freedom, I was definitely living in a very repressive political system.

In my neighborhood Kerry signs outnumbered Bush signs by three to one, but many people didn’t vote. We were told that Bush was going to win anyway. I voted regardless. We were told at the local democratic headquarters that our contributions would go to the battleground states. I understood and respected that decision. In effect, democrats told us not to vote, they told us it was a waste of time, they told us this by not make any effort to win Alabama. Now, many on this board are upset with Alabama??? WTF???

deserve a party that will fight for them and concede not.one.single.vote to the Repiglicans. That's what makes Governor Dean's "Fifty State Strategy" so very important. But if it's going to work, Alabama Liberals have to work in concert and in unity and force.

That's two Florentines on this thread! Great to see you, Stan.

48. re: Presidential Graph Comparison for AL
Historically, Alabama has been mostly Democratic. The "leap" to being a red state occurred in 2000 (the election prior, we were red by 8% margin...much more recoverable). Now, during these past 8 years, a number of things have changed...including population growth, and as all of us "home grown southerners" know, there are a hell of a lot of yankees (no offense DU yankees), and foreigners that have moved in to our precious state. There have been new businesses like Target, the Toyota plant, and a big lump of people that came from St. Louis "Misery" to the Redstone Arenal...imported Republicans. I think that people from mostly democratic states should start moving around to all of the marginal states....we need to get some equilibrium here before I personally have to suffer another four years of Dem. bashing!

51. I Agree
Alabama is a very deep shade of red. But Clinton did very well both times. In 1996, he won nearly as many counties as Dole did. And many of those counties that he won (Barber, Butler, Choctaw, Sumter) all went to Bush by a strong margin.

The base is there for us to make not only Alabama a blue state, but the rest of the southern states. Heres to it!

52. Where's this map?
Because not only my county (Houston), but my district(2), has been red since Carter. The last few years have only made it worse. I do have to say almost all of the yankees I know are Republican. It's like they know it's safe haven for them here. Fortunately, most don't survive the first summer lol.

Houston, Dale, Coffee, Geneva, Pike, Henry. That is a depressing site. No Dem has won Bama since 1960! And, of course, JFK didn't win my county. Also, none of my counties have gone to a dem since Carter, as I said above. Why am I not surprised? Ever feel like you're surrounded by idiots lol!?

Yes, we are surrounded by idiots. They fail to see so much, because they strive to see so little.

I think we have definitely got to get an organized grassroots campaign down here so count me in.

79. Gypsy lady are you still there?
We were only six years old at the time. You and the other members of your clan lived off there on the other side of the dead cotton fields down toward Stenson's Hollow.

I hope you remember me. I was a skinny little kid bashful and speaking Yankee. I wore corduroy knickers with black and white checkered socks. My shoes were ragged too like yours were. I guess we were poor then.

We rode the bus together to first grade in Sheffield Alabama. You were so pretty and smelled deliciously of concord grape candy. One Morning you gave me your candy fresh from your sweet mouth; a lovers first kiss. You may not remember me but I will never forget you.

That was a year or so before WW2. Our family moved back North. Dad had been working construction on the coal fired steam generating plant at Wilson Dam. He married a girl from Sheffield-my step mother.

In later years I spent a summer there playing River-Rat on the Tennessee. My Uncle Con lived on Second Ave in Sheffield a block behind the shell station. I went to eleventh grade in Sheffield.

Then the Korea war rolled along. Last time I went to Sheffield was about 1963.

I have many happy memories of Alabama.

Especially the Gypsy Girl. If you ever run into her ask her to come steal me? Please.

There is a thread in this forum about a possible Alabama DU meetup, and some were suggesting Lake Guntersville (which I'm sure is lovely, friends), and I suggested that a southern location would also be nice (for example.....Foley!!!).

Looks like Alabama DUers are from all over the state. But if you've got a location (and cheap accomodations!) to propose, I'll back you all the way!

97. Heather - check out this thread
asking if DUers are interested in starting a discussion group for those interested in adoption issues:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3444018

You have to be a donor to access DU Groups, but it is SOOOOO worth it. DU has come to be a really valuable - if frustrating, at times - community for me, so I felt compelled to give something back. My first donation was very, very modest - we are one of those families that are eating whatever canned food is in the pantry by the end of most months - and what I got in return was fantastic. There are lots of features you can only use (like the "search" feature) if you are a donor, but the best donor usage privilege is access to the discussion groups.

Just thought the adoption group might be of interest to you!

Shari

Thanks for letting me know about this, Shari.

I may try to become a donor. Needless to say, like you, we are living basically paycheck to paycheck as well and adoption is certainly not cheap, but I hope to find a little extra to make a donation.

Thanks again!

In the mid-70's I used to drive along Garth Rd. passed the Jones farmhouse and open land. As you neared Four Mile Post, there were homes on the other side of the road and one of the mail boxes had the name "Another Jones". Mr. Jones owned a lot of property in southeast Huntsville. Hope Gibson's is still around. :-) :-)

122. Welcome! And a little food for thought...
Welcome to DU and to the Alabama state forum, Pystoff. As you try DU on for size and see if it is a fit for you, please feel free to join your fellow Alabama members in our little corner of the community. There is a great and diverse mix of people among our ranks!

One point worth mentioning - as the moderator of this forum, and one of a handful of DU moderators from the South, I keep a careful eye out for South bashing on the boards. "Tex-ass" is probably a term kept out of posts here. Hope this helps!

However, I now live in Chicago, IL.

My family still lives down there, though, and I visit frequently.

I remember what it was like to be a liberal among the rednecks.

The only subject on which I've been able to put aside political bickering among my relatives is FOOTBALL.

WAR DAMN EAGLE.

124. Welcome To DU, Pystoff & Stuckinlucky
We Alabama DUers are pretty good about putting our football divisions behind us to unite behind our Democratic candidates. It's great that we have so many DUers with Alabama ties. The activity just on this forum gives me hope for our state.

Pull up a chair and post a while! :toast:

141. Probably not
I don't know where your grandmother lives, but I don't have any bumper stickers on my car right now. I had a Kerry/Edwards sticker back during election season, but took it off a week or so after the big dissapointment.

But you have peaked my curiousity. Liberal bumperstickers, HERE? What did they say? What kind of car?

146. Hello from Vinemont
It's about 50 miles north of Birmingham and 50 miles south of Huntsville.

I've enjoyed reading all of the introductions.
I've been around for about a year, but tend to stay quite for the most part and just read.

I think there are many of us from Alabama who are "quitely" supporting the cause.
