I've been thinking about visiting the States...
And I thought going to each state forum and asking "What's good to see here?" You know, touristy/historical stuff. I've only been to Washington (state), Montana, North & South Dakota, Minnesota, Florida (Miami area), Dallas-Fort Worth airport(hee!)and Maine (during the '50s). Sooo...

Tell this wander-lusting Canadian where to go (not like that:evilgrin: )

1. Va here...
Colonial Williamsburg is a must. Yorktown and Jamestown are right around there too. If you want to visit the oldest continually inhabited English settlement you can drive down to Hampton, although there is not much there. You might also like Va Beach, and there is a lot of civil war history all over the state.

10. I'll second Virginia. Many things here to see
Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello, at Charlottesville, VA. Also, home of James Monroe. In Staunton, home of Woodrow Wilson. In Poplar Forest, another home of T. Jefferson. Montpeilier, home of James Madison.

Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive...beautiful scenery all the way.

Roanoke Virgina!!! Home of the Star-City of the South with the largest manmade star atop the Roanoke Mountain.

Far southwest VA with the Cumberland Gap

We have caverns galore starting near Front Royal (not far from DC)..Skyline Caverns, Luray Caverns, Grand Caverns, Natural Bridge Caverns, Dixie Caverns...Also at Natural Bridge...the tallest rock bridge in the country.

Also, Kings Dominion north of Richmond...our Capital; Jamestown, Williamsburg, Busch Gardens near Williamsburg

Now, what are your interests? There are many other things to see and do here.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 09:36 PM by Canadian Socialist
the site where everyone disappeared? Or am I misremembering. And, no offence, but caverns and high places are out. Phobias, don't you know <g>. My interests (other than politics) include, but are not limited to, photography <nudge, nudge, wink wink>, museums, art galleries and hikes in the wilderness (with my camera). And no guns! Just thought I would throw that in to bug the 'mericans <beg>. Oh, but I do love canoeing and fishing and beer.

28. You're remembering Roanoke Island in NC where all the
settlers disappeared or were taken by the Native Americans to live with them. There is some evidence that the latter occured when later settlers came and found some of the Native Americans with physical characteristics of the lost colonists. The Lost Colony of Roanoke in North Carolina is a long running outdoor drama depicting this era in our history.

Hope you can come to Virginia. I think you will enjoy the scenery here. It's wonderful, but very different from our West and your Canada.

4. gulf shores and dauphin island

Dauphin Island is a very important bird migration site. You need to visit in spring, I'm going to say your best bet would be mid-April.

Gulf Shores is eager to rebuild its tourism industry after Hurricane Ivan and any money you spend there will be much appreciated. I may visit myself but it's difficult as I generally do Grand Isle, Louisiana for the spring migration and I also want to do High Island, Texas.

A fall-out of spring warblers, tanagers, and ruby-throated hummingbirds falling out of the sky is like nothing you've ever seen, but you have to get lucky on the weather. If the weather is too good, the birds will keep migrating instead of falling out to rest on the island.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 07:51 PM by Canadian Socialist
Must see the Big Easy. I think in a past life I was a Cajun <g>. Thanks everyone for being so fast! Amazing, these internets, aren't they.

BTW, would be coming from Calgary (north of Montana). So would probably do an east-south-west-north route. What do all of you think?

that sucks. Been there done that. My (former, good paying) job is in Mexico, or is it China? I can never remember. Course, the CEO's of the company are living large in the Caymans.

edit to add: cause, you know, it IS all about me.:eyes: Sorry, but at my age (49)and gender (female) it's hard to find a decent job anymore. Am I bitter? Naw... just disappointed in how things are turning out.

7. In Dothan, Al
"The Mural City"...if you like art displayed on buildings, we're your place lol ;) It's pretty cool actually. Our murals are commissioned from Southern and local artists and dipict the history of the area. We currently have 13 all in the downtown area.

http://www.dothanalcvb.com/murals.htm

We have a really great collection of antique stores, the states only working agricultural museum, and are about 70 miles from Panama City Beach, Fl. In the summer, we have a series of outdoor concerts and there are many area festivals. There's a lot things worth seeing between PCB and Atlanta (where I happen to be from lol) too.

12. This sounds like my kind of place
Being from Calgary, I love me some cows :toast: As well, looking at some of those murals... wow! Great art, no seriously. I love that kind of stuff. It's kitschy, but in a good way. Outdoor music, festivals and the ocean. What's not to love. BTW, I have a valid passport and all my shots so I'm good to go! What's the weather like in the summer? I'm used to about +25 and very dry.

20. Lol, I'm sure you're serious about the art
;) We have several internationally known artists in the region as it turns out and a little local museum that is pretty cool. I would definitely NOT advise anyone from any farther north than Va to visit here in the summer though lol. It's hot and humid. It was almost 80 today lol. Spring, say between mid Feb and May is good, or fall, about Oct to mid Dec is good. July, Aug, and Sept are hell. Even the locals don't go out between 11am and 4pm unless absolutely necessary! Spring is marvelous here though. Our humidty level is generally over 70% all year long. Well over lol. It is a great place, even if it's overrun with Reps. lol. Plenty of us nice progressive folks around ;).

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 08:02 PM by Inland
and do all the fricking tourist stuff. I do, still, after twenty years in the area. Top of sears tower. Wendella boat tour. Chicago Architecture tours of Loop, Glessner House, Graceland cemetary. Blues bars. Millenium Park. Second City revues.

13. Oh dear
I sort of wanted to stay away from big cities, see the small towns and meet the "heartland" folks. But you've made Chicago sound very interesting. Just don't try to convince me to see any baseball. Hate! Hockey is THE ONLY GAME worth watching/playing, YMMV <g>

Blues bars... hmmm may have to rethink plan.

15. Don't confuse heartland with small towns.
Chicago IS the heartland, with the advantage of being somewhere people actually live and do interesting and fun things. Some call it the biggest hick town in the world, which I take in a nice way.
And it is physically beautiful, because the people have tried to make it so.
And the museums, plays. You can skip the baseball.

I don't apologize for not resizing the photos. I took them, and they are worth the load time if I say so myself.

23. It's a sculpture in Millenium Park
the new lakefront park downtown. The official name is "Cloud Gate". Everyone is going to call it "The Bean." Just got placed last summer, and an immediate hit.
The skyline is reflected in its surface in a very cool way.

It probably says more about us Southerners (and we are a significant voting block dontcha know? lol) than anything else in the South. There are a gazillion things to see in Atlanta. If you plan on going thru, let me know and I'll send you a list lol. Way too much to type here!

Also, take a cruise on the Kenai Fjords, take the inland highway cruise up to Alaska and come to my house for a bar-be-cue. Those are the highlights of my state.
