Mike Doogan has outed the identity of anonymous blogger, Mudflats.

This is outrageous. Doogan needs to go next time around.

http://www.themudflats.net/2009/03/27/in-exposing-the-identity-of-mudflats-rep-mike-doogan-exposes-himself/

Anonymity is an interesting thing. Anyone who has read my “About” page knows that Mudflats popped out of my head and on to my keyboard last May. I, like many of you, get frustrated with my government. There isn’t anyone who pays attention, on either side of the political spectrum, who doesn’t at some time feel like they need to get something off their chest.

I wasn’t quite sure what this whole blogging thing was about, but a dear friend of mine who is a brilliant writer was doing some work for the American Cancer Society blog, and urged me to start one of my own. And so, one evening after some crazy shenanigans from Don Young and a glass of shiraz, the first post went up on Mudflats. It was a strange sensation to write, and then click on that blue oval button that said, “Publish”. With that click, I was putting my opinion out to the world. I was giving permission for people to peek into my brain, and read my diary, as it were. I had no particular desire for anyone to know it was coming from me, and why should they care, anyway? I’m just….me. I’m not a politician, nor a writer, nor a journalist, nor a state or federal employee, nor a lobbyist. I was just a citizen who was paying attention, feeling frustrated, and liked getting stuff off my chest.

I checked my blog statistics later in the day, and noticed that two people had clicked on my article. I sat there utterly amazed. I called to my spouse, “Look at this! Two people read it!” Then, the next day, eight people had read it. I was getting about a dozen hits a day the next week. I didn’t know where they were coming from, but I imagined my little group of a dozen people who enjoyed Mudflats enough to come back and read more. Then twenty people. And by the end of the summer, about 250 a day. Maybe they liked feeling like somebody was speaking their particular truth. Maybe they liked it. It was a good feeling.

The day that Sarah Palin got nominated to be John McCain’s Vice President, life changed. My sister called me at some pre-dawn hour and said, “Did you hear?” I, like many Alaskans, was completely stunned. Sarah Palin? Was I still dreaming? Really? I knew I had to take the day off. I made a pot of coffee, and thought to myself, that my 250 people might not be the only ones interested in this VP pick. Now, many people adored Sarah Palin, and maybe some of them had blogs too….I had never checked, but they must be out there somewhere. But I knew some things about her, and her policies and positions that others might not be able to find out so easily. I decided to write my opinion. So I wrote a post, “What Is McCain Thinking? One Alaskan’s Perspective.” And that’s exactly what the piece was - one Alaskans perspective. My perspective. Just in case anyone was interested.

It took me about 45 minutes to crank it out and click Publish. (Yes, I was still in my pajamas at the time) And it turned out that people were interested. Really interested. By the time I’d made myself a couple eggs and toast, and sat back down there were more than 7,000 hits. By the end of the day there were 64,000. The total readership of that post ended up being almost 270,000 with more than 1300 comments. To say I was shocked is putting it mildly. I began to get emails and comments asking me when I was going to post again, asking questions about Palin, and saying that this was the only “real” information they were getting.

<snip>

It turns out, that Rep. Doogan did make good on his threat to expose me in his legislative newsletter. It actually suprised me, because I thought that maybe he realized that blowing up a progressive political blogger wouldn’t earn him many brownie points with other Democrats. But nevertheless, here you go.

Anonymous Blogger Anonymous No More

The identity of the person who writes the liberal Democratic Mudflats blog has been secret since the blog began, protected by the Anchorage Daily News, among others. My own theory about the public process is you can say what you want, as long as you are willing to stand behind it using your real name. So I was interested to learn that the woman who writes the blog is Anchorage resident Jeanne _____.*

Best wishes,
Mike Doogan

So, now, if you look on the About page, you’ll get to see my real name* (which Rep. Doogan almost got right). And you also get to learn that the rules of the game are whatever Rep. Doogan’s “theory of public process” say they should be. How does everyone feel about that? And as a former journalist, why is Rep. Doogan criticizing the Anchorage Daily News for protecting my identity?

And here’s another irony. Rep. Doogan thinks he has exposed me, but in reality he has done nothing but expose himself.

And with that, Mudflatters, I need to take a little time off to assess things, and take stock of how life will be changing for me and my family.

1. Why would Doogan regard Mudflats as an enemy to be exposed?
What'd she ever do to him?

3. I think it stems from an e-mail campaign urged by Mudflats
and others of the progressive bloggers a while ago to encourage the legislators to follow up on the Troopergate matter. Mike, Fred Dyson and some of the others wrote snarky responses, which Mudflats posted at her website, prompting further e-mails. Mike has been kind of snarly ever since.

Shannyn Moore's blog entry contains quotes from another interesting e-mail exchange between Mike and a constituent. I think this Doogan remark is fascinating.

“My motivation is: I think the public should know who it is tearing strips off Sarah Palin every day. Not because I’m a big fan of Sarah Palin, but because I don’t believe in anonymity in the political area. It’s too much like people wearing sheets and hoods for my taste.”

He's accusing Mudflats of being the KKK!

12. that's the email he sent to me
Shannyn asked me to post it on her blog, kind of funny to see it end up in a bunch of blogs and message board comments about the whole debacle.

Doogan is my rep, so I think he felt like he needed to respond. We spent most of the afternoon writing back and forth. Never gonna vote for Douchegan again, actually I never have voted for him so I guess again isn't the right word to use there.

2. Text of an email I just sent to Rep. Doogan:
Representative Doogan:

I have admired the work you've done as a crusading journalist and then as a state representative for a long time.

It is this admiration that makes me feel such great disappointment about your decision to reveal the identity of the blogger known as "Mudflats".

Could you please tell me why you did this?

I could understand this from a conservative politician, but not from one who has generally been seen as a progressive. I also have difficulty understanding why you would do this as a fellow journalist.

Mudflats had always had a contact email on her blog. People could always respond to what she said there.

And there have been many examples of anonymity within journalism. The tradition of confidential sources and the need to protect them is well-established. There have also been many situations in which people, covering a story or reporting on events, could not reveal their identity without putting themselves in danger of retribution of some sort.

Mudflats has never done anything that has put you in danger of anything like that. To the best of my knowledge, she has never unfairly covered you or maligned you or anyone else.

Why would you, then, engage in the pointlessly vindictive act of "outing" her?

It was a choice that was beneath you. You're a better person than that.

I hope you will apologize to "Mudflats" for this action as soon as possible, as there is nothing she could possibly have done to you to deserve it.

10. Ken, what's in the air down there in Juneau, anyway?
There's been so much flip-flopping, line-jumping and just plain rudeness in the current legislature, it just makes my head hurt! (I'm teasing about Juneau, of course - that's God's country for sure, and not in the RW Bible Baptist Church way!)

What's gotten into our state Dems? Has the fact that we actually elected a Democratic Senator gone to their brains like some kind of flesh-eating disease? First Begich decides to go public as a "conservative" Democrat (understandable, given the political atmosphere here) then Doogan goes completely bonkers.

I've never been a totally anonymous blogger/poster, but can certainly understand and empathise with those who are. This is, at best, a 14th Amendment issue and at worst, just plain illegal - and not just in our fair state!

11. Hard to say. Maybe Doogan thinks he can get the GOP to not go after him in '10
If he attacks anti-Palin bloggers(you wish, Mikey). Maybe he just a "screw the grassroots, only the people who've GOTTEN elected and the ones that write them big checks count" type. Maybe, like George Costanza, he just has a shrinkage problem.

4. Blue, check your regular email for a copy of what I just wrote Doogan.
Edited on Sat Mar-28-09 01:53 AM by northofdenali
I thought he was a true blue Dem until he was elected - his stripes have certainly changed in the last few years.

 - Mudflats can take it. Lots of support there, including me, you, and many many others!

ON EDIT: Ah, hell with the anonymity on MY part. Here's what I wrote:

"You played blogger/provocateur/etc. during your years at ADN and for a long time afterward.

WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO PUBLISH AN ANONYMOUS BLOGGER'S IDENTITY?

What gives you the right? Are you that much of an egotistical hypocrite?

Yes, I guess you must be.

By the way, I am a non-anonymous, strongly Democratic voter who will make sure your next campaign is boycotted by those of us who still believe in the Constitution of the United States. Please recall, if you will, the 14th amendment.

6. I wish you'd post this on GD...
AKM has many fans outside of Alaska. This is outrageous and a total abuse of power. It also shows the power that the internet now wields in politics.
