What are your feelings about the Goldwater kid going up against Janet?
They are really out to get her.
I'm getting a little nervous.
I love Janet, I think she is great. The repugs in this state are smearing her. It's time to prepare.

Anyone following this, or have heard any groups that are working on Janet's re-election?

We CANNOT let this happen.

1. I thought he was a dem, and he's no kid!
Interesting because I saw a story about this recently.

2. A Dem? No-you must be thinking of someone else!
Don Goldwater’s conservativism could offer voters a clear choice against Napolitano’s shortcomings
Tribune Editorial
August 2, 2005
It was beginning to look at though Gov. Janet Napolitano's re-election campaign next year would be cakewalk. That suddenly changed on Tuesday when a guy by the name of Goldwater threw his hat in the ring.

Never mind that few outside Arizona's Republican inner circle know who he is. He possesses perhaps the most potent name in the state, and in announcing his candidacy he made clear that he hews to the conservative political line drawn by his late uncle, Sen. Barry M. Goldwater.

Don Goldwater's words on Tuesday must have been music to the ears of Republicans smarting from Napolitano's recent vetoes of legislation to expand school choice and curb illegal immigration. “The state is headed in the wrong direction,” he said. “We must return to the basic principles of limited government, individual liberty and economic freedom.

5. You are getting this backwards!
Janet Napalotino is our Gov. She is a democrat. The best Gov this state has had. No she's not perfect. The repugs in this state have been trying to find someone to beat her in '06.

Goldwater is a repug, and what worries me is his name. This is "Goldwater country" We have streets named after him, part of the airport. Who knows what else?! I just worry that the people in this red state are going to see Goldwater and vote for him on this alone.

It's time to take action. The repugs are in major attack mode against Janet, and they now have an official leader.

11. With all due respect, Janet isn't anywhere near the best, but she's up
there.

Raul Castro and Bruce Babitt were excellent governors and true Dems.

Possibly before your time, maybe? I was in my early teens when Castro was our governor.

In recent years, however, Janet stands head and shoulders above the rest.

6. One of the first questions I would ask him
did he support the 'guns in bars' bill that Napolitano vetoed?

9. here's hoping for a long primary
Looks like this election might be turning into a referendum for Arizona on whether to go forward into the future or backward 40 years.

Hell, we've already got alot of ingredients of the 1960's--an unwinnable "war," ethnic tension, and an economy just waiting for the last shove into instability.

10. Goldwater has been dead for years
and there are a lot of new residents in this fast-growing state. I don't think the name carries much weight with most voters; perhaps a few old farts in Mesa, but that's about it. Fact is that most people feel Janet has done a good job, and she has that incumbent advantage. The GOP will try to smear her, but she'll still win by seven to ten points.

BTW, late in his life Barry stood up against the religious right. In today's terms he would be a McCain-like "moderate" compared to some of these troglodytes.

12. If this Goldwater isn't a Barry Goldwater type, I wouldn't worry about it.
If he's more radical R/neo/theocon, the Goldwater conservatives in AZ will vote Janet over this guy.

I've lived in AZ since for 36 years and my parents were heavily involved in Dem politics here. If he's a Repub like Barry was, we have reason to worry. Janet is more of a Barry Goldwater type than most New Republicans.

Remember, too, that the Goldwaters helped found and have been very active in Planned Parenthood in Arizona, something many Rad Right Repubs will be very wary of. They will look for him to disavow any relationship, I'm willing to bet.

I think that will be the telling issue right there.

13. He's gonna stir up the anti-immigration vote.
Never mind if he doesn't have any other ideas, that makes him dangerous and could possibly carry the Valley, particularly the EV, by a larger margin than Salmon in 2004. We all know that was a close race and his 'anti-immigrant' platform could make it even closer.

Ugh.

16. I get the Tribune, and this has been the huge discussion coming
from the righties in the editorial section.

We need to get things going here. I don't want to lose Janet.
Especially to some of the idiots in this state.
